How to Clean-Install an NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready Driver on Windows

Follow NVIDIA’s Windows procedure to select a clean installation for a GeForce Game Ready Driver, from download through restart.

To clean-install an NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready Driver, download the driver for your exact GPU and Windows version, run its installer as an administrator, choose Custom (Advanced), and check Perform a clean installation. Let setup finish, then restart Windows. This is NVIDIA’s manual-install procedure; it is a troubleshooting option, not a guarantee that a particular game or display problem will be fixed.

1. Download the right Game Ready Driver

Use NVIDIA’s official driver selector to choose your GeForce GPU and Windows version. Do not assume that a version listed elsewhere—or the newest version number you can find—supports your specific card and operating system. NVIDIA provides separate entry points for desktop and laptop drivers, so select the one that matches your system.

Game Ready drivers are NVIDIA’s gaming-oriented branch, while Studio drivers are aimed at creative applications. NVIDIA says Game Ready drivers are tested across “thousands of hardware configurations,” but does not give an exact count on its Game Ready driver page. Choose Game Ready if gaming support is your priority, and still verify the GPU and Windows selections before downloading.

2. Prepare Windows before installing

Save your work and close open applications. NVIDIA warns that background programs can interfere with driver components registering correctly. Pay particular attention to GPU monitoring or tuning tools such as Corsair iCUE and MSI Afterburner, as well as video players, browsers, and applications using 3D acceleration.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI 2.1b, DisplayPort 2.1b, 2.5-slot, Axial-tech Fans, 0dB Technology, Dual BIOS
  • AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
  • OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
  • Check that Windows Update is not actively running an installation; NVIDIA says an update running in the background may cause the driver installation to fail.
  • Close the applications above before launching setup, rather than leaving them running in the background.

NVIDIA’s support instructions, updated May 26, 2026, say that leaving such applications open may prevent some driver components from registering correctly, potentially affecting system performance or stability. The instructions do not say that every open application will cause a failure.

3. Run the installer and select a clean installation

  1. Find the downloaded NVIDIA display-driver installer, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the Windows User Account Control prompt if it appears.
  2. If the installer asks where to extract temporary files, keep the default path recommended by NVIDIA.
  3. Choose the components you want. For the full installation described in NVIDIA’s instructions, select NVIDIA Graphics Driver and NVIDIA App. The app is part of that full-install selection; NVIDIA does not say it is required to install the graphics driver by itself. Available components may vary by package, so use the choices shown in your installer.
  4. Select Custom (Advanced), then click Next.
  5. On the following screen, enable Perform a clean installation, then continue through the installer prompts.
  6. Wait for setup to finish, then restart the PC to finalize the installation.

The display may flicker or briefly go blank while a display driver is being replaced. This can happen during driver installation, but it is not a guaranteed step.

What the clean-install option does—and does not promise

NVIDIA’s current instructions confirm the clean-install checkbox and recommend this manual installation route when an NVIDIA App driver installation has failed. They do not specify exactly which user settings or profiles every package resets. Treat the option as a clean driver installation, not as a universal reset of every NVIDIA setting.

A clean install may be a useful step when following NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance, but NVIDIA does not claim it will fix every game, graphics, or display issue. If the problem remains, the right next step depends on the specific GPU, Windows version, symptom, and any installer error—not on assuming the checkbox guarantees a repair.
