Make the firearm safe and verify it is unloaded before cleaning. Then use the exact owner’s manual to identify which surfaces may be wiped and which parts need a model-specific procedure. For accessible excess lubricant on a surface the manual permits you to clean, wipe it with a clean, suitable cloth or patch. Before firing, confirm the bore and chamber are clear.
Make the firearm safe before you start
- Point it in a safe direction. Keep it pointed safely throughout unloading and cleaning.
- Unload it according to its manual. Remove the magazine if applicable and open the action. Springfield Armory’s XD-S instructions call for removing the magazine and emptying the chamber; SIG Sauer likewise directs users to ensure the firearm is unloaded and cleared of ammunition.
- Keep ammunition away from the cleaning area. Visually check that the chamber and magazine area are empty before proceeding. Springfield Armory’s XD-S instructions specifically call for checking the chamber and magazine well.
Find out where the grease is and what the manual allows
Cleaning products, lubrication points, and permitted disassembly vary by make and model. Follow the owner’s manual for the exact firearm rather than applying a general procedure to every component. Browning cautions that chemicals can damage finishes, and Smith & Wesson directs owners to the instructions supplied with their firearm.

Identify the location of the excess before wiping anything. The method for an accessible exterior surface is not automatically suitable for the bore, chamber, trigger or striker area, or another internal mechanism. Do not disassemble beyond the steps described in the manual.

If the manual permits cleaning the surface, use an appropriate clean patch or lint-free cloth to remove excess grease. Springfield Armory lists small lint-free cloths and patches among cleaning materials. SIG Sauer’s Cross Magnum manual instructs users to wipe off excess CLP after cleaning the receiver; Taurus says excess oil should be removed and describes a lightly oiled cloth for normal care. Those directions apply to the specified guidance and do not mean that every lubricated part should be left dry.

Do not use a dripping-wet patch or brush. Springfield Armory says to wet the patch or brush and squeeze out the excess before use. Use products intended for firearms and follow their labels: SIG Sauer’s manual cautions against substituting general household solvents.
Handle internal grease and storage preservative by model
If grease is inside the bore, chamber, trigger or striker area, or another internal part, follow the exact model’s cleaning instructions. The appropriate procedure differs between firearms; Springfield Armory explicitly warns against oil or grease on the striker for the models covered by its cited instructions. If grease is hardened, inaccessible, or its location is uncertain, ask the manufacturer or a qualified gunsmith instead of improvising with solvent or disassembly.

Thick preservative grease used for long-term storage is not the same as routine lubrication. CZ manual guidance says preserving grease is intended for long-term storage under demanding conditions and should be thoroughly removed before use. Apply that instruction only where it fits the particular firearm and its manual.

Follow the manual’s pre-use checks and make sure the bore and chamber are clear of grease and other material. Smith & Wesson says preservative and oil should be wiped from the bore and chamber before use. Glenfield warns that firing a rifle with oil, grease, or other material partly obstructing the bore may damage the rifle and cause serious injury to the shooter and people nearby.
