1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo clean a small kitchen appliance safely, switch it off, unplug it, and let hot parts cool completely. Clean only the removable parts its manual allows you to remove, wash them by hand or in a dishwasher only when that model’s instructions permit it, and wipe the electrical body with a suitable soft, damp cloth. Keep water out of openings and controls, never immerse the appliance, cord, or plug, and let parts dry fully before reassembly and use. The details differ by appliance and model: a toaster’s crumb tray, an air fryer’s coated basket, and a combo oven’s removable door do not necessarily have the same cleaning rules.
Why safe cleaning is part of appliance care
Cleaning removes food residue that can interfere with an appliance’s intended operation, but the way you clean matters as much as whether you do it. Water near electrical components can create a hazard; scraping or scouring can damage coatings and finishes; and reaching into a toaster slot with an object can be unsafe. The safest method is therefore not one universal kitchen-cleaning routine. It is a short set of electrical and handling precautions followed by the specific directions for each appliance and removable part.

Some manufacturer guidance also ties cleaning to performance. Frigidaire says oil, grease, or food left to accumulate in its air-fryer toaster combo can contribute to odor, malfunction, or reduced performance. That is a model-specific reason to follow the manufacturer’s after-use instructions, not proof that every appliance requires the same schedule.
Consumer Reports, in an article updated April 1, 2024, describes ease of cleaning as a factor it evaluates for many small appliances. Its engineer Ginny Lui notes, “In some cases, the time spent cleaning the appliance may be longer than the time you spent using it.” A careful routine can make that work more manageable without taking shortcuts that could damage the appliance.

What to check before cleaning
Start with the exact appliance model, not just its category. Two products that both toast, air-fry, or press sandwiches may have different removable parts, finishes, and permitted cleaning methods. Locate the manual or the manufacturer’s official product-help page and check the cleaning and maintenance instructions. If the product has separate guidance for a basket, pan, tray, door, plate, or heating element, treat those as separate items.
- Identify the parts. Confirm what is designed to come out and how it is removed. Do not pull off a component simply because it appears detachable.
- Check the permitted method. Look for whether each part is hand-wash only, dishwasher-safe, or subject to another restriction. Permission for one component does not establish permission for another.
- Note special surfaces. Coated baskets and plates, mesh, heating elements, vents, and electrical openings may need different handling.
- Check the maintenance frequency. Use the interval stated for that model or component. Where no interval is given, do not assume that another appliance’s schedule applies.
Have a soft cloth ready for the body and use only a brush or other cleaning tool when the appliance’s instructions allow it for that specific task. A nonabrasive sponge may suit some permitted surface cleaning, but it is not a substitute for checking the manual. Do not use steel wool, metal tools, abrasive pads, hard-bristle brushes, or unapproved cleaners where the manufacturer warns they can damage a coating or finish.
A safe cleaning sequence for any countertop appliance
- Switch the appliance off and unplug it. Do not begin cleaning while it is powered. If it has been heating or cooking, allow the hot surfaces and removable parts to cool completely before handling them.
- Remove only authorized components. Follow the model’s removal directions. Set aside the pieces that the manual says can be cleaned separately; leave fixed parts in place.
- Clean the removable parts according to their individual instructions. Hand-wash them if directed. Use a dishwasher only when the manufacturer explicitly allows it for that specific part and model. Do not soak a part unless its instructions say soaking is allowed.
- Wipe the appliance body carefully. Use an appropriate soft cloth, dampened as directed. Keep liquid away from controls, vents, openings, and other electrical areas. Do not immerse the appliance, cord, or plug.
- Use a brush only for an approved task. For example, certain air-fryer instructions allow a soft brush for a specified area. That permission does not mean a brush can be used on every interior surface or appliance.
- Let everything dry thoroughly. Do not reinstall damp parts or operate the appliance until the cleaned components are fully dry.
- Reassemble and check placement. Return each part to its intended position, making sure removable trays or doors are seated as directed by the manual.
If residue is lodged somewhere you cannot reach using the instructed access method, stop rather than probing with an improvised tool. If the cord, plug, or appliance is damaged, do not continue cleaning or use; consult the manual or the manufacturer’s service support.

How instructions differ by appliance
The examples below show why cleaning rules must be matched to a component and model. They are manufacturer-specific directions, not interchangeable instructions for every toaster, air fryer, or sandwich maker.
| Appliance or guidance | Cleaning detail established by the manufacturer | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| KitchenAid toaster | Use the crumb tray to remove crumbs; the tray is hand-wash only and should be returned firmly to position. The appliance should be unplugged and cool, and its body can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. | Do not immerse the toaster. The tray’s hand-wash direction is not a dishwasher permission. |
| GE toaster oven | Use the designed crumb tray and follow the unplugging and cooling directions. | GE says not to insert foreign objects into toaster slots, immerse the unit, or use aggressive cleaners. |
| Philips Airfryer heating element | Philips allows a soft- to medium-bristle brush for residue on the heating element under its cleaning guidance. | Do not use a steel-wire or hard-bristle brush. This is a task-specific instruction; check the exact model’s directions. |
| KitchenAid air fryer | KitchenAid describes a soft-bristle brush for basket mesh and says parts should be completely dry before reuse. | A brush permitted for basket mesh is not blanket permission to brush other parts or use abrasive tools. |
| Frigidaire air-fryer toaster combo | Unplug and cool the appliance, avoid immersion, use a damp cloth on the exterior and electrical cable, and hand-wash the removable door. | The removable door’s hand-wash instruction is specific to this combo; do not infer that another model’s door or accessories can be washed the same way. |
| Xiaomi Mi Smart Air Fryer guidance | Unplug and cool before cleaning; avoid getting water on the appliance and avoid abrasives on coated parts. | Do not treat this guidance as approval to use the same method on another air fryer’s components. |
| Philips toaster and sandwich-maker guidance | Unplug and cool the appliance, check the removable-part instructions, and avoid immersion or soaking plates. | Whether a particular plate can be removed or washed depends on its product instructions. |
Cleaning a toaster or toaster oven without reaching into the slots
Crumbs are the main routine-cleaning issue addressed by the toaster guidance in these examples. Use the crumb tray or other access method the manufacturer designed for the appliance. GE specifically warns against inserting foreign objects into toaster slots; the same caution is useful whenever a cleaning job tempts you to poke inside a narrow opening. A utensil, knife, or other improvised tool is not a safe substitute for the intended tray or access method.
- Unplug the toaster or toaster oven and let it cool. Wait until hot components are cool enough to handle.
- Remove the crumb tray only as the manual directs. Empty and clean it using the stated method. For the cited KitchenAid toaster, the crumb tray is hand-wash only.
- Clean the exterior with a soft, damp cloth if the instructions allow it. Keep liquid out of slots, controls, and openings, and do not immerse the unit.
- Dry and reinstall the tray. KitchenAid says its tray should be returned firmly to position; use the model’s own directions to confirm correct placement.
Do not turn the appliance upside down or shake it to dislodge crumbs unless its own instructions explicitly direct you to do so. If food remains in a location that the designed access method does not reach, consult the manual or service support instead of probing the slot.

Cleaning an air fryer and protecting its surfaces
An air fryer may have several distinct cleaning areas: a basket, pan, mesh, interior, and heating element. The safe method for one does not automatically apply to the others. Check each part’s removal and washing instructions, and be especially careful with coated surfaces. Philips and Xiaomi warn against tools or cleaners that can damage surfaces; KitchenAid says to avoid abrasive or metal pads in its air-fryer guidance.

Basket, pan, and mesh
Remove only the parts the manual identifies as removable. Check whether each is hand-wash only or dishwasher-safe before washing. KitchenAid describes using a soft-bristle brush on basket mesh and requires parts to be completely dry before reuse. Do not extend that brush instruction to a different model, a coated surface, or an area that the manual does not identify.
Heating element
Clean the heating element only as the model’s directions allow. Philips permits a soft- to medium-bristle brush for residue on the element in its Airfryer guidance, while warning against steel-wire and hard-bristle brushes. That is not a reason to brush a hot or powered appliance: unplug it first and let it cool fully. If residue is inaccessible or the manual does not explain how to reach it, stop and seek the manufacturer’s instructions.

Coatings and cleaners
Coated baskets and other finished parts can be damaged by metal tools, steel wool, abrasive pads, or unapproved cleaners where the manufacturer prohibits them. Avoid scraping residue with a knife or other metal object. Follow the product’s cleaning directions rather than assuming that a tougher scrub is more effective.

A combo appliance combines functions, but it does not inherit every cleaning rule from a basket-only air fryer. It can have an exterior, cable, door, racks, trays, and heating areas, with separate directions for each. Frigidaire’s instructions for its air-fryer toaster combo call for unplugging and cooling the appliance, avoiding immersion, wiping the exterior and electrical cable with a damp cloth, and hand-washing the removable door.

Cleaning a sandwich maker
For a sandwich maker, unplug the appliance and let it cool before cleaning. Check whether its plates are removable and what the manual permits for those plates. Philips’ toaster and sandwich-maker guidance says to avoid immersion and soaking plates. That means you should not treat a plate as an ordinary dish or leave it submerged unless the exact product instructions explicitly authorize a method.
Clean only the surfaces and components the manual describes, using an approved cloth or tool. Keep water away from the electrical body, cord, plug, controls, and openings. If food is lodged where the instructions provide no safe access method, do not force the plates apart or scrape with a metal object; consult the model’s instructions or service support.
How often to clean and maintain each appliance
There is no universal cleaning interval established for small kitchen appliances. Follow the manual for the particular model and component. Among the cited examples, KitchenAid recommends emptying its toaster’s crumb tray after each use, and Frigidaire recommends cleaning its air-fryer toaster combo after each use. Those are not schedules for every toaster or combo.
For other models, the available guidance does not establish a single frequency. Use any interval the manufacturer states, and remove fresh spills promptly where the product’s directions allow. If a manual does not specify a schedule, avoid inventing one based on a different appliance; inspect the product’s help page or contact its support service for model-specific guidance.
Maintenance also means checking the condition of the appliance before putting it back into service. If you notice damage to the cord, plug, or unit, stop and consult the manual or manufacturer support rather than treating cleaning as a repair. Reassembly should follow the product’s directions, particularly for trays and other parts that must be returned firmly or seated in a defined position.
Common cleaning mistakes and what to do instead
- Cleaning while plugged in or still hot: switch off, unplug, and wait for hot parts to cool before beginning.
- Putting the whole appliance in water: do not immerse the appliance, cord, or plug. Wipe the body with a suitable soft, damp cloth and keep liquid away from openings and controls.
- Assuming every removable part is dishwasher-safe: check the cleaning instructions for that specific component and model; use hand-washing when directed.
- Scrubbing a coating with metal or abrasive materials: avoid tools and cleaners prohibited by the manufacturer, and use only an approved cleaning method.
- Poking into toaster slots: use the designed crumb tray or access method. Do not insert foreign objects.
- Shaking a toaster to clear crumbs: use its intended tray or access method unless the model’s directions explicitly say otherwise.
- Reassembling while parts are damp: dry components thoroughly before reinstalling them or using the appliance.
- Forcing access to stuck residue: stop when residue cannot be reached safely by the instructed method, and consult the manual or service support.
Quick decision checklist
- Have you identified the exact model and checked its cleaning directions?
- Is the appliance switched off, unplugged, and fully cool?
- Are you removing only components that the manual says are removable?
- Have you verified hand-wash or dishwasher permission for each part separately?
- Are you keeping water away from the electrical body, cable, plug, openings, and controls?
- Are the brush, cloth, and cleaner allowed for the specific surface or task?
- Can you reach the residue using the product’s intended access method?
- Will all cleaned parts be fully dry and correctly reinstalled before use?
If any answer is no or uncertain, pause and check the model’s official instructions before continuing.
