Unplug a styling tool and let it cool completely before routine cleaning. Follow the manual for the exact model: cool iron plates and barrels may be wiped with a soft, damp cloth if allowed, while a hair dryer’s filter and air inlet need dust and hair removed using a method its manufacturer permits. Keep liquid away from handles and electrical openings, and never immerse an electrical styling tool.
Before cleaning: make the tool safe to handle
- Switch the tool off, unplug it, and let heated surfaces cool completely. ghd gives this advice for its tools, and Tefal says to unplug its curling iron and let it cool on its safety stand. Follow the directions for your own model: ghd’s care guide and Tefal’s product instructions.
- Check the manual before choosing a cloth, cleaner, or brush. Use only the products and methods approved for that model and its surface coating.
- Keep moisture controlled. If the manual allows a damp cloth, it should be damp rather than dripping. Do not let liquid enter the handle or electrical openings, and do not immerse the appliance. ghd explicitly warns against immersing electrical appliances.
How to clean flat irons and curling irons
- Unplug the appliance and wait until its plates or barrel are completely cool.
- Wipe the surface with a soft, damp cloth only if the manual permits it. Tefal’s instructions for one curling iron specify a damp duster on a perfectly cold tool and warn against getting liquid into the handle: see the Tefal instructions.
- For stubborn product residue, do not assume a cleaner recommended for one iron is safe for another. L’Oréal Paris’s guide describes warm soapy water or rubbing alcohol for flat-iron cleaning, while Panasonic warns against alcohol and certain cleaners on its hair dryer. These directions apply to different products; check your own model’s manual before using soap, alcohol, or a specialty cleaner.
- Avoid scraping coated plates or barrels with abrasive tools, spraying cleaner into the handle, or immersing the appliance. Use only an approved residue-removal method.
How to clean a hair dryer
Dryers need attention at the air inlet and filter, where dust and hair can accumulate. Their maintenance steps are not the same as wiping an iron’s heated surface.

- Unplug the dryer before cleaning its body, filter, or air inlet, unless the model’s manual gives a specific exception for a particular procedure.
- Clean accessible dust and hair with a soft brush or vacuum only if the manufacturer permits it. Panasonic recommends a toothbrush or vacuum for its dryer’s filter and inlet, and warns that forceful rubbing with a fingernail can tear the filter. Read Panasonic’s maintenance instructions.
- If a removable filter has been cleaned with moisture, let it dry completely before reinstalling it. Wahl gives this direction for its guidance on styling tools and dryers: Wahl’s cleaning guide.
- Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth only as the dryer’s manual allows. Panasonic cautions against certain cleaners on its dryer body, so do not apply a product recommended for an iron to a dryer without checking its instructions.
A model-specific exception for the air outlet
Panasonic’s maintenance page describes brushing dust from the air outlet while its dryer is plugged in and set to cool, with the inlet left unblocked. This is a specific Panasonic procedure, not a general cleaning method for other dryers. Do not clean a plugged-in dryer unless the exact model’s instructions explicitly direct you to do so.

How often should you clean styling tools?
There is no single interval that applies to every appliance. Follow the manual and adjust for use and visible buildup. Manufacturer recommendations differ:

- Panasonic advises cleaning the air inlet of its dryer once a month or more often.
- Paul Mitchell recommends weekly cleaning of a dryer vent and filter.
- Wahl says cleaning frequency should reflect usage; it notes salon owners and barbers may need weekly cleaning, while home use may require less frequent attention.

Storage and cord checks
- Let a heated tool cool fully before putting it away.
- Do not wind the cord tightly around the appliance. Wahl recommends wrapping it loosely and checking cords regularly for cuts or nicks.
- Stop using a tool if its cord is damaged. Rowenta says not to use an appliance with a damaged cord and directs users to an approved repair center for replacement: Rowenta’s instructions.
Shared salon tools need separate sanitation guidance
Removing hair or styling-product residue is not the same as disinfecting a tool used between clients. The cited household care guidance does not establish a salon disinfection protocol. For shared professional tools, check applicable local rules and the exact appliance instructions rather than treating ordinary cleaning as sanitation.

Find the instructions for your exact model
Safety and maintenance directions can vary by model, including which cleaners are permitted and whether a filter can be removed. Conair notes that each appliance’s booklet contains its safety and maintenance instructions and provides digital manuals through its FAQ page. Use the model-specific manual as the deciding reference when general advice or another brand’s guidance differs.
