Unplug the charger before wiping it, and replace a worn head rather than trying to restore its bristles.
What to do after every brushing
- Rinse the head and bristles under running water. Wash away toothpaste and debris. The American Dental Association recommends rinsing thoroughly after each use: ADA toothbrush-care guidance.
- Follow your model’s instructions for detaching the head. Oral-B’s iO guidance says to rinse the head while the handle is on, then detach the head and rinse the head and handle separately. Dry the parts before reassembling. Other models may have different instructions, so check the manual for your exact brush.
- Stand the brush upright to air-dry. Leave it exposed to open air between ordinary uses rather than sealing it while damp in a travel case or other closed container. The ADA says storing a moist toothbrush in a closed container promotes microbial growth more than leaving it exposed to air.
How to clean the handle and head connection
Toothpaste can build up where the brush head meets the handle. Remove the head and clean this area as your manual specifies; do not assume every electric toothbrush has the same water resistance or cleaning procedure.

Philips Sonicare 3500, 3600, and 3800 series
The Philips Sonicare 3500/3600/3800 Series manual instructs users to remove the head, rinse toothpaste from the metal shaft with warm water, and wipe the handle with a damp cloth. It says to rinse the head connection with warm water at least once a week. Do not press the rubber shaft seal with a sharp object or tap the handle against a sink to shake off water.
Oral-B iO
Oral-B’s iO cleaning instructions call for separating and rinsing the head and handle, then drying them before reassembly. Check the instructions for your exact iO model and accessories rather than applying Philips’s shaft-cleaning steps to it.

- Unplug the charger before cleaning.

- Keep electrical parts dry and do not immerse them unless the instructions for that exact model explicitly permit it.
Special accessories, including UV travel cases, may have their own care instructions. Check the accessory manual before rinsing or wiping them.
When to replace an electric toothbrush head
The ADA recommends replacing a toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are visibly matted or frayed. For the Sonicare 3500/3600/3800 series, Philips specifies replacing compatible heads every three months and sooner if they are worn. These are recommendations, not results of a measured cleaning or wear test.

Dishwashers, boiling water, and sanitizers
Do not use a dishwasher or boiling water unless your exact manual permits it
The ADA does not recommend microwaving or dishwashing a toothbrush because high heat may damage it. Philips specifically warns that its Sonicare 3500/3600/3800 brush head, handle, and charger should not go in a dishwasher or be cleaned with boiling-hot water. Those Philips warnings apply to the named series; follow the manual for your own brush and accessories.

The ADA notes that toothbrushes can harbor bacteria, but adverse health effects from those bacteria have not been demonstrated. It also says evidence about toothbrush sanitizing is limited and advises anyone considering a sanitizing device to look for FDA clearance. Oral-B says there is no solid evidence sanitizers keep brushes cleaner than rinsing with water and allowing them to dry. Routine rinsing and air-drying are the supported baseline; do not treat a sanitizer as required or as proven illness prevention.
