To clean a wet-dry vacuum safely, unplug it—or remove its battery—then empty and wash the tank, clean the filter only as its manufacturer allows, and let washed parts dry fully before storage or dry pickup. Filter rules differ by model: check the owner’s manual before changing the filter setup for wet use.
Clean the vacuum after use
1. Disconnect power
Switch the vacuum off and unplug it before opening the tank, emptying debris, or removing a filter. For a cordless vacuum, remove the battery. The DEWALT DCV580H/DCV580/DCV580HAM instruction manual specifies removing the battery before maintenance or accessory removal.

2. Empty and wash the tank
Remove the power head as directed in the manual and empty the drum into a suitable container. After wet pickup, empty the tank promptly rather than leaving water or wet debris inside during storage. RIDGID’s Wet/Dry Vac owner’s manual recommends washing the drum thoroughly with warm water and mild detergent, then wiping it dry.
3. Clean and inspect the filter
Remove the filter according to the manual, and use only its approved cleaning method. Some compatible filters can be tapped to dislodge dry debris or rinsed with water; this does not mean every filter is washable. RIDGID advises using moderate water pressure for its wet-application foam filter. Strong pressure can damage filter material.

After cleaning, inspect the filter for tears, holes, or other damage. RIDGID warns that even a small hole can let substantial dust escape. Replace a damaged filter, and do not operate the vacuum without the filter required by its manual. DEWALT’s cited manual likewise advises replacing a filter that is damaged, no longer works properly, or remains clogged after cleaning. It states: “Never operate without a filter in place.”
4. Dry parts completely
If the manual calls for it, let a rinsed filter dry completely before storing it or using it for dry debris. RIDGID specifically instructs owners to dry the filter before storage or dry pickup. Do not reinstall or use a wet filter for dry pickup unless the vacuum’s manual permits it.

5. Wipe the exterior and store the vacuum dry
RIDGID recommends wiping the exterior with a cloth dampened with warm water and mild detergent. Store the vacuum with its tank and filter dry, and keep vents or exhaust openings clear as directed by the model’s manual.
Check the manual before wet pickup
There is no universal rule to remove a filter for wet pickup. Requirements can depend on the vacuum, its capacity, the filter type, and the amount of liquid. RIDGID offers wet-application filters sized for different capacities, while its guidance for the 4-gallon WD4070 gives a model-specific example: a pleated paper filter may remain for a small amount of liquid, but larger-volume pickup may call for removing it or using the specified wet foam filter. The product guidance also discusses an automatic airflow cutoff at the liquid limit. Do not apply those WD4070 instructions to a different vacuum; follow your own model’s manual.

Use a wet-application or foam filter only when the manufacturer specifies one for your vacuum and task. The RIDGID wet-application foam filter guide explains its wet-filter use, rinsing, drying, and capacity-specific sizing.

- Replace a damaged or persistently clogged filter. Tears, holes, damage, or clogging that remains after approved cleaning are reasons to replace it. Choose a model-compatible wet/dry vacuum replacement filter matching the vacuum’s make, model, capacity, and filter type.
- Choose a wet-application filter only for a compatible model. Check that the manufacturer specifies it for the vacuum and intended liquid pickup. Match the filter’s size to the model’s capacity.
- Consider a collection bag only where supported. Some vacuums accept a dust bag for dry debris, which can keep the drum cleaner and simplify disposal. For example, RIDGID lists a compatible bag for its HD0318 3-gallon cordless vacuum. This is model-specific and is not a recommendation for wet pickup. Check the HD0318 product information and your own manual before buying.
When comparing filters, check compatibility, intended use (such as dry dust or liquid pickup), whether the filter is washable or disposable, any drying requirement, and the manufacturer’s replacement criteria. A feature described for one product—such as the washable filter on the DEWALT DCV517B—does not establish that filters for other models can be washed.
