Brush off loose dirt, clean the boots gently with water and a material-compatible footwear cleaner if needed, then let them dry slowly at room temperature. Remove the laces and insoles first, and keep boots away from radiators, fires, and other direct heat. Snow boots vary in materials and construction, so follow the care instructions for your specific model if they differ.
Clean snow boots after a hike
- Remove the laces and insoles. Set them aside to dry separately; opening up the boots helps air reach the interior. Nikwax recommends removing both before drying (Nikwax footwear care).
- Brush off loose dirt. Use a soft brush and gentle strokes before adding water. This removes grit without grinding it into the material, as REI advises in its hiking-boot cleaning guidance.
- Wash only as much as needed. For routine trail dirt, use water and gentle cleaning. For stubborn grime, choose a footwear cleaner labeled as suitable for your boot’s materials and follow its directions. REI cautions against bar soap and household detergents because their additives can harm leather or waterproof membranes. Its listing says Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel is suitable for suede, nubuck, and smooth-finish leather; check your boot’s care label before using it.
- Rinse thoroughly. Remove cleaner residue with clean water. Do not put hiking boots in a washing machine: REI warns that machine washing can damage them.
- Dry the boots slowly. Wipe away excess water, then air-dry at room temperature in a well-ventilated place. Keep them away from direct heat and sunlight. Nikwax warns that excessive heat can irreversibly damage leather and harm footwear adhesives (Nikwax footwear care).
If the boots are soaked through
Loosely stuff the boots with newspaper to draw out moisture, and replace it whenever it becomes damp. A fan can help move air around them, but it should not blow hot air directly onto the boots. Let the boots and removable insoles dry fully before wearing them again.

Choose care by material and purpose
Cleaning, drying, conditioning, and restoring water repellency are separate jobs. A waterproof membrane does not mean the boot’s exterior never needs cleaning: REI recommends cleaning fabric around membrane areas and using treatments suited to the material elsewhere. When a boot maker’s directions differ from general advice, use the maker’s instructions for the exact model.
| Boot area or material | Care consideration |
|---|---|
| Full-grain leather | Clean gently. REI says leather may need conditioner when it is dry or cracked; use a product intended for that leather. |
| Suede or nubuck | Use compatible cleaner and treatment. REI says these materials do not require conditioning. |
| Waterproof-membrane area | Keep the fabric clean; follow the boot maker’s guidance for treatments so membrane areas are not treated inappropriately. |
These distinctions follow REI’s leather-boot care guidance and boot waterproofing guidance.

When to restore water repellency
Reproofing is not a required after-hike step. Consider it when water no longer beads on the exterior and instead begins soaking into the outer material. Choose a treatment compatible with the boot’s material and construction, and follow its label: some products are applied to clean, damp boots, while Nikwax says to allow footwear to dry for 24 hours after waterproofing before use. The product’s specific directions determine the process.
