Start with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth; use moisture or disinfectant only where the manufacturer permits it. Never spray liquid directly onto the device or let it pool around openings.
Before you start: identify the device and its surfaces
Look up the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model, not just the product category. A method permitted for a phone’s glass surface may be unsuitable for its coating, ports, keyboard, earbud mesh, or charging contacts. Remove a case and detachable accessories if the maker’s directions allow it.

Power the device off and disconnect its charger and other cables before wiping. HP specifically advises not to clean a computer while it is turned on or plugged in; Apple also says to disconnect external power and cables. Do not charge the device again until it and any removed parts are fully dry. See Apple’s cleaning guidance and HP’s computer-cleaning instructions.

A cautious cleaning workflow
- Remove loose dirt. Wipe exterior surfaces with a clean, dry, soft lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasive towels and hard scrubbing, and do not push debris farther into a port, speaker, microphone, seam, or mesh.
- Wipe hard surfaces only as allowed. If the manufacturer permits moisture, lightly dampen the cloth or use a compatible wipe. Put liquid on the cloth, never directly on the device. Keep it away from openings and contacts, and use only the amount needed to wipe the surface without leaving liquid behind.
- Disinfect only when appropriate. A disinfectant is not automatically safe for every finish. Check both the device maker’s compatibility directions and the product label; follow the label’s contact time without allowing liquid to pool or seep into the device.
- Let everything dry fully. Follow the manufacturer’s drying instructions. Wait until the device and removable parts are completely dry before reassembling, powering on, or charging.
If grime is inside the device, or the device is damaged, stop rather than flooding it, probing openings with sharp tools, or taking it apart. Find model-specific service guidance.

Cleaning a phone, tablet, or display
Apple recommends a soft, lint-free cloth, keeping moisture out of openings, and not spraying a product directly onto its devices. For Apple hard, nonporous surfaces, its guidance permits 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes, 75% ethyl alcohol wipes, or disinfectant wipes. That permission applies to the surfaces Apple specifies; it is not a general rule for every device or finish. Check Apple’s instructions for the product you own.
The CDC says to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for electronics. If those instructions are unavailable, it says to consider alcohol-based wipes or sprays containing at least 70% alcohol for touch screens, then dry surfaces thoroughly to prevent pooling. This is a conditional fallback, not permission to use alcohol on any device or coating. See the CDC’s electronics and household-cleaning guidance.

Cleaning a laptop, keyboard, or mouse
For HP computers, the company recommends a 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% water solution for many exterior areas, applied with a moist—not dripping—cloth. HP notes exceptions, including PCs with an antifingerprint coating and a model-specific painted bezel. Keep liquid out of openings and check the guidance for your exact computer at HP Support.
Microsoft says to apply an isopropyl alcohol solution of 70% or less to a soft, lint-free cloth when cleaning its mice and keyboards. Its keyboard guidance also describes a lightly dampened lint-free cloth or cotton swab with mild soap and water, with care taken not to drip liquid into the keyboard. Follow the instructions for the specific accessory at Microsoft Support.

Cleaning a game console or controller
Nintendo’s UK guidance says that when disinfection is needed for a Switch, Joy-Con, or accessory, lightly apply a consumer-grade disinfectant containing about 70% alcohol to a soft, clean cloth, then gently wipe the product. This is Nintendo-specific guidance; do not assume the same method is suitable for another console or controller. Check Nintendo’s cleaning and disinfection instructions.

Earbuds need separate care because their mesh, tips, and charging contacts are unlike a phone’s hard exterior. Use the cleaning instructions for the exact model, and do not transfer a phone or controller method to earbuds. Samsung’s cited guidance advises against alcohol and organic solvents for its Galaxy earbuds, warns against metal or wire brushes, and describes using a dry, soft cloth for the earbud blades. Consult Samsung’s earbud-cleaning guidance for its product-specific steps.

Cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting are not the same
Cleaning removes dirt and impurities. Sanitizing and disinfecting refer to reducing or killing germs with products intended for those purposes. A device that looks clean—or has simply been wiped—has not necessarily been disinfected. For a disinfecting product, follow its label as well as the device maker’s material restrictions. The EPA explains the difference between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting; the CDC notes that cleaning is an important first step in removing most germs from household surfaces.
