There is no universal descaling recipe for steam vacuum mops. Find the exact model number and follow its manual before adding anything besides water to the tank or trying to descale the steam circuit. Some models use replaceable scale-control parts; others prohibit tank additives. Do not assume vinegar is safe.
Before cleaning, identify your mop and make it safe to handle
Check the model label on the appliance and locate its manufacturer manual or support page. Instructions can differ even between products that look similar. For example, the Kärcher SCV 4 uses a replaceable decalcification cartridge, while Tefal says not to put descaling chemicals or other additives in the VP6557RH tank.

- Switch off and unplug the appliance, then let it cool. Follow the safety sequence in its manual.
- Check which components the manual permits you to remove, rinse, or wash. Do not immerse the appliance or wet its motor housing unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.
- Empty and rinse the clean-water tank or dirty-water container only as directed. Let washed parts dry as instructed before reassembly.
Clean the head, pads, and other removable parts
Wash only parts the manual identifies as washable; a removable component is not automatically safe to rinse. Remove debris from the floor head using the method specified for your model, and check the manual before cleaning rollers or filters with water.
Example: Tefal VP6557RH
For this model, Tefal says to detach the head and wipe holder, rinse the head, and leave it to dry completely for 24 hours before reinstalling. Its wipes may be washed with tap water or in a washing machine at 40°C. These are VP6557RH instructions, not a universal cleaning schedule.

Descale using the method specified for your model
Look for a cartridge, anti-calc filter, or other scale-control instructions in the manual. Follow the stated replacement interval and any reset procedure. Do not pour vinegar, citric acid, or commercial descaler into the tank unless the manual for your exact model explicitly approves it.
Kärcher SCV 4: replace the decalcification cartridge
The SCV 4 manual describes a replaceable decalcification cartridge and an indicator/reset procedure. Follow the manual’s steps for replacement and resetting rather than improvising a chemical flush. After fitting a new cartridge, steam may initially be weak or irregular while the cartridge fills; Kärcher says steam output can take about 30 seconds after first steaming to reach its maximum.

Tefal VP6557RH: replace the anti-calc filter
Tefal specifies replacing the VP6557RH anti-calc filter every three months. Its product guidance says, “Never add any products to the water tank.” This warning applies to the VP6557RH; check the instructions for your own model before using any tank additive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTroubleshoot weak steam, leaks, or floor stains
- Steam is weak just after cartridge replacement: On the SCV 4, allow the cartridge to fill and the steam output to rise. If the problem persists beyond the initial period, consult the model’s troubleshooting instructions.
- Steam escapes at the side: Tefal advises checking whether the issue is related to the hose or accessories. If it continues, contact customer service or an authorized service center.
- Brown stains appear on the floor: Tefal says these can result from descaling products or other additives in the tank, and directs owners to an approved service center.
- Scale symptoms persist: Check that the model-specific cartridge or filter has been replaced and reset as directed. If the manual’s maintenance steps do not resolve the issue, seek authorized service rather than repeatedly running an unapproved mixture.
Why one model’s descaling recipe may be unsafe for another
Manufacturer instructions for one appliance do not establish a safe method for every steam vacuum mop. For instance, the STM-300 manual includes a vinegar-and-water recipe, while Tefal prohibits tank additives for the VP6557RH. Use a recipe only when the manual for your exact model expressly recommends it.
