Clean waterproof leather boots by hand with lukewarm water and a small amount of liquid detergent or a cleaner approved for the boot’s materials. Let them dry naturally away from direct heat. Cleaning removes dirt; it does not necessarily restore the water-repellent finish, so follow the boot maker’s advice before applying any treatment.
Before you clean: check the boot’s materials and care instructions
Start with the boot maker’s care instructions, particularly for leather footwear. Waterproof leather boots can combine a leather outer, a waterproof-breathable membrane, and a surface water-repellent finish. A product suitable for one part may be wrong for another.

GORE-TEX’s footwear-care instructions say, “For leather shoes, check manufacturer’s instructions.” Match any cleaner or treatment to the boot’s leather and construction; smooth full-grain leather, suede, nubuck, and mixed leather-and-fabric boots may need different products.

How to clean waterproof leather boots
- Remove loose dirt. Take off the laces and, if possible, the insoles. Shake out grit, then brush dirt from the boots with a soft brush.
- Clean gently by hand. Use lukewarm water with a small amount of liquid detergent, or a footwear cleaner expressly suitable for the boot’s materials. GORE-TEX advises against bleach and washing footwear in a machine. If using a cleaner, test it first on a discreet spot: REI notes that leather color may run.
- Remove cleaner residue. Wipe or rinse gently with clean water, following the product and boot maker’s instructions. Avoid soaking the boots unnecessarily.
- Dry slowly. Remove the insoles and let the boots dry at room temperature or another moderate temperature, away from direct heat. Nikwax advises: “Dry footwear slowly at room temperature.” If the boots are thoroughly soaked, loosely stuff them with newspaper to draw out moisture and replace it when damp. Do not leave wet boots sitting for a long time.
Choose a cleaner that fits the boot
A dedicated footwear cleaner can help with stubborn grime, but it is optional; use one only when its label and the boot maker’s guidance support your materials and construction. Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel is listed by REI for smooth, suede, or nubuck leather and recommended by Nikwax for stubborn footwear grime. It is a cleaner, not a substitute for the boot maker’s advice on restoring water repellency.

Wax and grease deserve particular caution. REI’s leather-care guidance says wax residue can interfere with the adhesive bond during resoling. For boots with a waterproof-breathable membrane, the wrong surface treatment can also affect breathability.
Cleaning is not the same as restoring water repellency
Cleaning removes dirt from the boot; it does not necessarily restore the durable water-repellent (DWR) finish on the outer surface. If water stops beading, consult the boot maker’s directions for that specific model before treating it.

For GORE-TEX footwear, the brand recommends a water-based restorative when DWR needs refreshing and cautions against waterproofing waxes or greases because they can affect breathability. That advice is specific to GORE-TEX guidance: do not assume every waterproof leather boot should be waxed, greased, or treated with the same product.
