Clean training shoes by hand: brush away dry dirt, gently wipe the upper with a mild cleaner suited to its material, then let every part air-dry fully. Check the care instructions for your exact shoe first. Nike advises against machine-washing shoes, and ASICS warns that washer and dryer use can affect shoe construction or materials.
What you need before you start
- A soft-bristled brush or soft cloth for removing dirt without aggressive abrasion.
- A small amount of mild soap and water, or an athletic-shoe cleaner approved for the upper material.
- A dry cloth, such as a microfibre towel, for blotting.
A special shoe-care kit is not essential. The right cleaner depends on the shoe: check its label or the manufacturer’s care page before using soap, water, or a product on a treated upper.

How to clean training shoes by hand
- Check the model’s care instructions. Look up the exact shoe and note any material-specific restrictions before cleaning.
- Brush off loose, dry dirt. Use light pressure with a soft-bristled brush or cloth. Brushing first helps avoid grinding grit into the upper.
- Take out removable laces and insoles. Clean them separately if the shoe allows it, and leave them out to dry. Insoles absorb sweat and moisture, which can contribute to odor, according to ASICS.
- Gently clean the upper. Apply a mild solution or a compatible athletic-shoe cleaner to a soft brush, toothbrush, or cloth, and work carefully over the surface. Avoid vigorous scrubbing and harsh chemicals.
- Blot away residue and moisture. Use a clean, dry cloth or microfibre towel rather than soaking the shoe.
- Air-dry every part completely. Let the shoes, laces, and insoles dry before putting them back together or wearing the shoes. Keep them away from tumble dryers and direct heat.
Nike summarizes its approach this way: “The best way to clean sneakers without damaging them is to brush them with a mild cleaning solution and let them air-dry.” This is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee that one method suits every shoe.

Adjust the method to the upper

Why avoid the washing machine and dryer?
Nike says it does not recommend washing shoes in a washing machine. ASICS likewise warns against washer and dryer use as a general cleaning method because they can interfere with shoe construction or materials, and high temperatures can harm materials. Follow the exact model’s instructions if they differ; this maker guidance should not be read as proof that every shoe is damaged by every wash cycle.

How often should you clean them?
There is no measured cleaning schedule established by the cited manufacturer guidance. ASICS says shoes may need cleaning only every few months unless they encounter heavy muck; treat that as its practical advice, not a universal rule. Clean them when dirt or buildup warrants it, while following the care instructions for their materials.
