For AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3, Apple’s mesh-cleaning method uses a soft-bristled children’s toothbrush, micellar water containing PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, and distilled water. Remove the ear tips, clean only the mesh locations Apple identifies for your model, and let the earbuds dry completely for at least two hours before using or charging them. Apple provides separate mesh illustrations for each generation, so identify your model before starting.
What you need
Apple’s instructions offer two supply paths: its named Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit, or the listed household supplies. Apple does not establish that either path cleans better; use the kit only if its contents suit the stated procedure.

Clean the mesh step by step
- Remove the ear tips. Pull firmly at the base of each tip. If it is difficult to remove, turn its rubber edge inside out or grip it with a clean cloth.
- Identify your model and the marked mesh locations. Apple shows separate cleanable mesh areas for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3; the Pro 3 illustration includes the bottom microphone. Follow the illustration for your generation and do not apply this process to unmarked surfaces. Apple’s model-specific illustrations
- Prepare the micellar water. Pour a small amount of micellar water containing PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides into a cup.
- Brush and blot each mesh three times. Saturate the toothbrush bristles with micellar water. Hold the AirPod with the mesh facing up and brush in circles for about 15 seconds. Turn the AirPod over and blot it on a paper towel, making sure the towel touches the mesh. Repeat the brush-and-blot steps twice more, for three passes total on that mesh.
- Repeat with distilled water. Rinse the brush with distilled water, then repeat the specified brush-and-blot sequence for each mesh you cleaned.
- Let the earbuds dry. Leave them out until completely dry for at least two hours before use or placing them in the charging case. These timings are part of Apple’s procedure, not a measured claim about cleaning effectiveness. Apple Support
What not to do
- Do not put AirPods Pro under running water. The micellar-water method is limited to the mesh areas Apple identifies; it is not a rinse for the whole earbud.
- Do not use sharp objects or abrasive materials on the mesh.
- Do not substitute household cleaners or compressed air. Apple’s dust guidance instead recommends wiping dust from the product with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and says not to use cleaning products or compressed air. Apple’s resistance and cleaning guidance
- Do not treat a water-resistance rating as permission to submerge the earbuds. Apple says resistance can diminish over time and cannot be rechecked or resealed. Soaps, shampoos, lotions, solvents, sunscreen, oil, and similar substances can negatively affect water seals and acoustic membranes. Apple Support
Why cleaning may matter—and when to seek service
Apple says debris or earwax buildup can affect device performance and noise-control features such as Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, and Transparency. That warning does not guarantee that cleaning will fix a particular sound or noise-control problem, and Apple’s cited instructions do not give a measured success rate for this procedure.
