What to use on a vinyl pool liner
Match the cleaner to both the surface and the soil. For waterline body oils, lotion, and grime, the liner maker Garrett Liners advises using cleaners formulated for vinyl and avoiding abrasives and petroleum products. Imperial Pools’ care guidance gives a different example—wiping the waterline with a sponge and mild dishwashing solution if needed—so check your own liner’s care instructions rather than treating one manufacturer’s method as universal. Do not assume a product is vinyl-safe just because it is sold for pools or tiles. Look for explicit vinyl-liner compatibility on the label and follow any restrictions from the liner maker.

How to clean waterline buildup gently
- Check the instructions. Read both the cleaner label and your liner’s care directions, including any guidance about water level and where the product may be applied.
- Use a soft tool. Start with a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge; a nylon pool brush is another option. Poolside by CGT’s Vinyl Pool Technical Manual recommends pool water and gentle cleaning tools such as these.
- Apply light pressure. Work on the affected area without scrubbing aggressively. Stop if the surface or printed pattern appears to be wearing.
- Rinse as directed. Follow the product label for application and cleanup; do not assume every cleaner uses the same method.
One supplier example illustrates why directions matter: Pool Chemical Products describes its tile-and-liner cleaner as a paste for waterline body oils and grease and says it can be used on liner pools. Its instructions call for lowering the water below the area being cleaned and applying the paste with its supplied sponge or a soft cloth. That is the supplier’s product-specific guidance, not independent evidence that the cleaner outperforms alternatives or a method to use with other products. #1 Best Overall
- FAST-ACTING FORMULA - Quickly removes dirt, scum, and oily stains from pool waterlines, steps, and shelves - Spray, let soak for 30 seconds, wipe with a scrub pad or mitt, and rinse clean.
- DESIGNED FOR MULTIPLE SURFACES - Ideal for tile, vinyl, plaster, fiberglass, plastic, and other pool surfaces - Works on waterline tiles, pool steps, shelves, polyester liners, and PVC materials. (NOT FOR PRINTED or PAINTED SURFACES)
- ACID-FREE CLEANING - Removes waterline scum, oily residues, dirt, and sunscreen buildup for a cleaner waterline. DOES NOT remove calcium deposits or hard water buildup, for which an acid-based cleaner is recommended.
- FOR BEST RESULTS: Use the included Star brite Magic Sponge, or a fine scrub pad for best results.
- WARNING: Do not use on painted or ink printed surfaces, including printed vinyl liners, faux tile patterns, wraps, or decals, as it may damage or remove printed designs. If unsure, consult the liner manufacturer's care instructions or dealer. Always test in an inconspicuous area before full application. Liability is limited to the purchase price of this product.
What to avoid—and why
- Scouring pads and steel wool: Abrasive tools can wear the liner’s printed pattern or harm its surface. Garrett Liners, Imperial Pools, and Poolside by CGT all caution against abrasive cleaning aids.
- Unapproved chemicals: Chemical misuse can damage vinyl. Use only products permitted by the liner maker and follow their labels; do not transfer one product’s instructions to another.
- Guessing from a product name: “Pool cleaner” or “tile cleaner” alone does not establish compatibility with a vinyl liner.
The Coated Fabrics and Film Association’s Performance Products Division identifies abrasive cleaning and improper chemical balance as risks to vinyl pool liners. Cleaning carefully helps avoid those risks, but the available guidance does not quantify how many years any cleaner or technique adds to a liner’s service life. - Confirm that the label specifically allows use on vinyl pool liners.
- Check that the product is meant for the type of soil you need to remove, such as waterline oils and grease.
- Make sure its application directions work for your pool and do not conflict with the liner maker’s care instructions.
- Use it with a soft cloth, non-abrasive sponge, or nylon brush where the directions permit.
When comparing products, these compatibility and use details are more meaningful than a “best” ranking unsupported by controlled comparisons. For a persistent stain or a liner-specific concern, ask the liner manufacturer or a local pool professional before trying stronger chemicals or more aggressive scrubbing.
