For the Sony A7S II (ILCE-7SM2), Sony’s sensor-cleaning procedure calls for a camera blower—not a brush. Use a plain manual blower gently to dislodge loose dust without touching the sensor. Brushes are for the camera exterior and lens; if dust remains after blowing, stop and consult a service facility.
Why a sensor brush is not the right tool for the A7S II
Sony’s model-specific ILCE-7SM2 Help Guide instructs owners to blow dust from on and around the sensor surface with a camera-cleaning blower. It does not instruct owners to brush the sensor. Sony’s broader sensor-cleaning guidance likewise describes a blower for the sensor area and reserves a brush for the camera exterior and lens.

For loose dust, the best-supported first tool is a plain, hand-squeezed camera blower. Sony says one is not supplied with the A7S II and calls for a commercially available camera-cleaning blower. No specific brand or model is established as tested or endorsed.

- Turn the camera off.
- Remove the lens.
- Hold the camera slightly face-down so loosened dust can fall out.
- Gently blow dust from on and around the sensor surface. Keep the blower tip within the lens-mount area; do not touch the sensor.
- Reattach the lens.
Sony warns against using a spray-type blower because it may scatter water droplets inside the camera. Do not blow too hard or subject the camera to shock during cleaning. Its guide specifically cautions: “Do not insert the tip of the blower into the cavity beyond the lens mount area, in order to make sure that the tip of the blower does not touch the image sensor.”
Where a camera cleaning brush is appropriate
A camera brush can gently sweep dust from the body and lens, but keep it off the sensor. Sony’s camera-cleaning guidance suggests a larger brush for exterior surfaces and a smaller one for corners and delicate parts. Sweep gently rather than pressing hard.

Sony prefers a plain blower over a brush blower for sensor-area cleaning. If you use a brush blower as a blower, remove its brush first so it does not blow dust from the brush into the camera. A lens brush or brush blower is not a substitute for the A7S II’s stated sensor-area procedure.

What to do if dust remains
If dust remains after the blower procedure, Sony’s A7S II guide says to consult a service facility. Sony’s general guidance also recommends contacting its service centre if dust is not removed; camera shops may offer professional sensor cleaning.

The cited Sony instructions do not specify an A7S II-compatible sensor swab, cleaning fluid, or wet-cleaning procedure. They therefore do not establish a swab kit as Sony-approved for this model. If you are considering one, check the kit maker’s compatibility information and instructions; for persistent dust, Sony’s stated next step is service rather than continued attempts with other tools.
