For routine odor prevention, remove laundry promptly, dry the gasket, tub and detergent drawer, leave the door and drawer open, and run the washer’s tub-clean cycle at the interval recommended for your model. If the washer already smells musty or has visible mold, Samsung gives a separate bleach-based treatment; don’t substitute that procedure for routine cleaning.
Why Samsung front-load washers can develop odors
Moisture and leftover detergent or other residue can remain in dark areas of a front-load washer, creating conditions that contribute to mold, mildew and unpleasant smells. Samsung’s guidance distinguishes the simple habits that help prevent odor from the stronger procedure for an existing mildew smell or visible mold.

Prevent odors after each load
- Remove laundry promptly. Clothes left in the washer retain moisture and can contribute to odor.
- Wipe the washer dry. Use a clean, dry cloth on the door seal, tub and detergent drawer.
- Let the washer air out. Leave the door and detergent drawer open so they can dry between uses.
For gasket buildup, Samsung Canada advises carefully pulling back the folds, wiping them with a soft cloth, and using warm water and mild soap if needed. Dry the gasket completely. Run the tub-clean cycle on your model’s schedule
Samsung US recommends running Self Clean, Self Clean+ or Pure Cycle about once a month or every 30–40 loads. Samsung Canada recommends about once a month. These are manufacturer maintenance recommendations, not independent test findings. The cycle name, controls and reminder behavior vary by model, so check the manual if you cannot find the cycle or your washer uses a different schedule. Treat an existing mildew smell or visible mold

- Empty the washer. Remove all laundry. If water remains in the tub, run Spin-only with the tub empty.
- Add liquid chlorine bleach to the detergent compartment. Fill only to the compartment’s max line. Samsung specifies the detergent compartment for this procedure, not the bleach compartment.
- Start Self Clean immediately. Do not leave bleach sitting in the washer, and do not put laundry in the tub during Self Clean.
- After the cycle, wipe away residue and run Rinse+Spin. Repeat if visible residue remains, then leave the door and detergent drawer open to dry.
Samsung says a front-load Self Clean cycle can take approximately four hours, but the duration varies by model. If odor or mold remains after several attempts, contact Samsung support. Samsung US odor-treatment guidance
Clean the pump filter periodically
Front-load models have a pump filter that needs periodic cleaning. Samsung Canada recommends cleaning it at least once a month or approximately every 40 washes. - Prepare for residual water. Place a suitable container near the lower-front filter panel. If the washer has recently run a hot cycle, let the water cool before draining it.
- Open the lower-front panel and drain the water. Use the emergency drain hose to direct remaining water into the container.
- Remove and clean the filter. Samsung Canada’s general instructions say to turn it counterclockwise, then clear debris with a soft brush.
- Reinstall it securely. Close the panel after following the instructions for your exact model.
Check the manual for the filter’s location and exact access steps; the general procedure may not match every washer.

Samsung says routine Self Clean or Pure Cycle generally does not need an added cleaner. Its US odor guidance names Tide Washing Machine Cleaner as an optional third-party product; if you choose to use a cleaner, follow that product’s directions.
