How to Clean a Robot Vacuum’s Brushes, Filter, Sensors, and Charging Contacts

A model-safe guide to cleaning robot vacuum brushes, filters, sensors, and charging contacts, including washability checks, dry-time rules, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn the robot vacuum off before maintenance, then clean each part with the method its model permits. Pull hair from the main and side brushes, empty and gently brush the filter, wipe sensor windows with a dry cloth, and clean the robot’s charging contacts and dock pins without water or abrasive tools. Never wash a filter unless the exact owner’s manual identifies it as washable, and never reinstall one while it is damp.

Robot vacuums differ in brush access, filter construction, sensor layout, and dock-power instructions. Use the procedure below as a safe framework, but treat your model’s manual as the final authority for removing parts, washing components, replacement timing, and whether the dock must be unplugged.

What you need before you start

Gather the supplies before turning the robot over. A clean, stable table makes it less likely that small clips, brush caps, or wheels will be lost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A clean, dry microfiber cloth for sensors, plastic surfaces, charging contacts, and dock pins.
  • A soft-bristle cleaning brush. It is useful for loose filter particles and brush bristles, but not for wet cleaning or scrubbing electrical contacts.
  • The manufacturer’s supplied brush-cleaning tool, if your robot came with one.
  • A bin or trash bag for hair and dust.
  • Scissors for cutting wrapped hair only when the manual allows it. Keep the blades away from rubber rollers, bristles, seals, and cables.
  • A flashlight to inspect the brush cavity, filter frame, sensor windows, and charging pins.

Do not use household spray, abrasive powder, a metal pick, or a wet cloth on sensors or charging hardware. Keep liquids away from the robot unless the manual explicitly describes a wet-cleaning procedure for a particular removable part.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Power down safely and locate the parts

  1. End the current cleaning run and switch the robot off using its physical control or the method specified in the app and manual.
  2. Move it to a stable surface with the underside facing upward. Keep the robot away from a stair edge while brushes and wheels are exposed.
  3. Find the exact manual for your model and edition. Check the diagrams for the brush cover, side-brush screws or clips, filter frame, sensor windows, and charging contacts.
  4. Check the dock instruction before touching its pins. Some manuals require the docking station to be unplugged; others describe a different precaution. An ECOVACS N10 manual excerpt, for example, instructs users to turn the robot off and unplug the docking station before cleaning the robot’s contacts and dock pins. That is a model-specific instruction, not a universal rule.
  5. Photograph the underside if you are unfamiliar with the part layout. The picture can help you return a brush or side-brush arm to its original orientation.

Work on one component at a time and keep removed parts together. A brush that looks symmetrical may have a keyed end, a bearing cap, or an arrow indicating the installation direction.

Clean the main brush and its cavity

1. Remove the cover and roller as directed

Release the brush guard using the tabs, latches, or screws shown in the manual. Do not force a cover that does not lift; hidden clips and retaining wheels vary by model. Remove the roller only after the guard is open, and note which end carries the removable cap or bearing.

2. Cut and pull away wrapped material

Hair, thread, carpet fibers, and pet fur usually wind around the roller ends first. Pull loose strands by hand. If a strand is tight, use the supplied cleaning tool or carefully cut along the strand with scissors. Make shallow cuts parallel to the roller, never toward its rubber surface or bristles. Remove every cut piece so it cannot enter the intake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Clear the ends and intake

Inspect both roller ends, the bearing or cap, and the channel where the roller sits. Hair packed behind an end cap can create resistance even when the visible bristles look clean. Use the tool’s small hook or brush only in the manner described by the manual. Do not pry against a sensor wire, seal, or drive gear.

4. Clean the brush guard and cavity

Brush or wipe dust from the guard, the floor of the cavity, and the intake opening. A soft dry brush can loosen compacted debris; collect it instead of pushing it farther into the vacuum path. If the manual permits washing a removable guard, wash that part separately and let it dry completely before installation. Do not assume the roller, bearings, or motor-side area is washable.

5. Reinstall and check movement

Return the roller in the original direction, fit both ends into their seats, and close the guard until every latch is engaged. Turn the roller by hand if the design allows it. It should rotate without scraping or a hard spot. A roller that binds after cleaning may be mis-seated or still obstructed at an end.

Clean the side brushes

Side brushes sweep along walls and commonly collect long hair at the hub. Remove each brush only by the method shown for your model: some lift off, while others use a small screw. Keep the screw and washer in a safe place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pull hair and fibers from the hub and each bristle cluster.
  2. Use the supplied brush tool or a soft brush to remove dust between the bristles.
  3. If scissors are necessary, cut only the wrapped hair and protect the flexible bristles from the blades.
  4. Wipe the mounting surface and the underside of the brush with a dry cloth.
  5. Reattach the brush in its original position and tighten the fastener only as firmly as the manual specifies.

Bent, split, or permanently shortened bristles can reduce edge cleaning and may indicate that the part is due for replacement. Select a replacement by the exact robot model, not by a similar-looking brush.

Clean the filter without damaging it

First identify the filter type

Filter frames can look alike while using different media. Some models use a dry, non-washable filter; others identify a plastic or foam element as washable. Appearance alone is not enough to decide. Read the filter-care section for the exact model and replacement part.

For a non-washable filter

  1. Remove the dustbin and open it over a trash container.
  2. Take out the filter by its frame or tab, avoiding contact with the filter media.
  3. Tap the frame gently against the side of the bin to release loose dust. Do not bend, slap, or compress the media.
  4. Use a soft-bristle brush to lift remaining particles if the manual permits brushing. Brush in the direction that least stresses the pleats or screen.
  5. Wipe dust from the filter frame and dustbin separately with a dry cloth.

Do not rinse a filter merely because it is dusty. Water can swell, deform, or weaken media that was designed to remain dry, and a damp filter can restrict airflow or promote odor and microbial growth inside the machine.

For a filter the manual declares washable

  1. Separate the filter from the dustbin and remove loose dust first.
  2. Rinse only the washable component, using the water method stated in the manual. Do not immerse a frame containing electronics or a non-washable layer.
  3. Do not add detergent unless the manual explicitly calls for it; residue can affect airflow and attract dust.
  4. Shake off excess water and place the filter in a clean, ventilated location.
  5. Wait until it is fully dry throughout, including pleats, foam, seams, and the frame, before reinstalling it.

“Dry” means no cool or damp areas remain when you inspect the filter, not merely that the outside feels dry. Drying time depends on humidity, filter thickness, and airflow, so follow the manual rather than a fixed number of hours. Never run the robot with the filter removed or damp unless the manufacturer explicitly provides a test procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wipe the sensors and bumper

Sensor windows may be located on the front bumper, underside, sides, or top turret. Dust, fingerprints, and cleaning residue can interfere with navigation, cliff detection, or obstacle recognition.

  1. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Fold it so a fresh section contacts each lens.
  2. Wipe the sensor windows and the bumper with light pressure. Do not push debris into a seam or grille.
  3. Use a dry cotton swab only where the manual allows it and only around an accessible edge; do not insert anything into an opening.
  4. Inspect the lenses under a light for streaks, hair, or grit, then make a final gentle pass with a clean part of the cloth.

Roborock’s maintenance guidance says not to use cleaning solution on sensors because abrasive cleaners can damage their coverings. The cited ECOVACS DEEBOT T50 OMNI manual specifies wiping sensor lenses and the bumper with a dry cloth and avoiding a wet cloth to prevent water damage. Those instructions support a dry-wipe default, while your own manual remains authoritative.

If a sensor window is scratched, cracked, cloudy beneath the surface, or loose, cleaning will not restore it. Stop using features that depend on that sensor and consult the manufacturer’s service guidance.

Clean the robot’s charging contacts and dock pins

Prepare the dock according to its manual

Some manufacturers tell you to unplug the docking station before cleaning its pins. Follow that model-specific instruction, especially if you will touch the dock hardware. Keep the robot switched off while cleaning its contacts.

Use a dry, gentle method

  1. Find the metal contact pads on the robot and the spring-loaded pins or plates on the dock.
  2. Wipe each surface with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
  3. If dust is lodged around a pin, use a soft dry brush to lift it away without bending the pin.
  4. Check that each spring-loaded pin moves freely and returns to position. Do not force, twist, or scrape it.
  5. Remove lint from the dock platform and the robot’s approach path so the contacts meet squarely.

ECOVACS guidance advises a dry cloth and cautions against harsh materials that could damage delicate charging pins. Do not apply water, alcohol, oil, metal polish, or abrasive pads unless the exact manual explicitly approves a particular product and method.

Roborock states that “Dirty contacts can slow down or even prevent your vacuum from charging, affecting your cleaning routine.” If charging remains intermittent after a dry cleaning, use the model’s troubleshooting instructions rather than scraping the contacts or adding liquid.

Reassemble and perform a safe check

  1. Confirm that the main brush, guard, side brushes, dustbin, and filter are fully seated and latched.
  2. Check that no cleaning tool, screw, hair bundle, or cloth remains under the robot.
  3. Place the robot on the floor and reconnect or power the dock only as directed by the manual.
  4. Start a short spot-clean or docking test while watching the first few minutes.
  5. Listen for scraping, clicking, repeated wheel attempts, brush stalls, or a new high-pitched motor sound.
  6. Verify that the robot reaches the dock, makes contact, and reports charging.

Stop the test if a brush does not turn, the robot reports a filter or brush error, a dock pin stays depressed, or the machine smells hot. Power it down and inspect the relevant part instead of repeatedly restarting it.

How often should you clean or replace parts?

There is no single cleaning calendar that applies to every robot vacuum. A home with long hair, shedding pets, rugs, construction dust, or frequent runs will load components faster than a lightly used hard-floor home. Inspect the parts whenever suction, edge cleaning, navigation, or charging changes, and use the maintenance schedule in your model’s manual.

Roborock’s lifespan guidance tells owners to check the manual for filter replacement timing. Replacement timing is likewise model-dependent for brushes, side-brush arms, and other consumables. Replace a component when the manual calls for it or when inspection shows damage, deformation, worn bristles, torn filter media, a cracked frame, or a roller that remains rough after cleaning.

When buying a replacement, verify all of the following:

  • The exact robot model and regional variant.
  • The component name and revision listed in the manual or parts catalog.
  • Whether the filter is identified as washable or dry-only.
  • Compatibility with your brush cover, dustbin, dock, or mounting hardware.
  • That the seller is the manufacturer or an authorized parts source when the manual recommends one.

Troubleshooting after cleaning

The robot will not start or reports a brush error

Turn it off again. Remove the brush guard and inspect both roller ends, the drive sockets, and the cavity for hair hidden under a cap. Confirm that the roller is the correct way around and that the guard is fully latched. If the error returns with a clean, freely turning roller, follow the model’s service procedure; the motor, sensor, or wiring may need attention.

Suction is weak after filter maintenance

Check that the filter is the correct part, fully seated, and completely dry. Inspect the dustbin inlet and brush cavity for a plug of compacted debris. A non-washable filter that was rinsed may require replacement rather than additional drying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The robot behaves erratically or misses obstacles

Inspect every sensor window for film, dust, or a fingerprint and wipe it with a dry cloth. Check that a bumper is not stuck after reassembly. If navigation remains abnormal with clean, undamaged windows, consult the model’s diagnostic and firmware guidance rather than applying cleaner to the sensors.

The robot does not charge consistently

Clean both sets of contacts again with a dry microfiber cloth, check that the dock sits on a level surface, and ensure the robot can approach without an obstruction. Inspect for a dock pin that is bent, stuck, or no longer spring-loaded. If the charging fault persists, use the manual’s troubleshooting path; do not scrape the metal or spray a contact cleaner.

A new noise appears

Stop operation and identify whether the sound comes from the main brush, a side brush, a wheel, or the dock. Recheck seating and remove any strand caught at an end bearing. Continued grinding, clicking, or heat indicates a possible worn or damaged part that cleaning will not fix.

A compact maintenance checklist

  • Robot switched off before handling parts.
  • Dock unplugged when the model’s manual requires it.
  • Main roller and both ends free of hair and string.
  • Side-brush hubs and bristles clear.
  • Filter treated according to its exact washability instruction.
  • Any washable filter completely dry before installation.
  • Sensor windows wiped gently with a dry cloth.
  • Robot contacts and dock pins clean, dry, and undamaged.
  • All covers, latches, dustbin parts, and brushes correctly seated.
  • Short supervised run completed without errors or unusual noise.
