Start with a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth and wipe gently. If that does not remove the marks, check the instructions for your exact phone or screen protector before using moisture. When its maker permits liquid, put a small amount on the cloth—not directly on the screen—and keep it away from openings.
First identify which surface is matte
“Matte screen” can mean textured or coated glass built into a phone, or a separate matte screen protector. Those surfaces may have different care rules. Apple, for example, gives iPhone-specific cleaning guidance, while ASUS’s advice covers its LCD/OLED panels and Belkin’s instructions apply to its Screen Skinz protector. Check the phone or protector maker’s instructions for the exact product; Corning also directs users to device manufacturers because screen specifications and coatings vary: Corning Gorilla Glass: Keeping Device Screens Clean.

A gentle cleaning method
- Prepare the phone. Follow the device maker’s directions for powering down and disconnecting it. Samsung’s guidance includes turning off the phone and removing cases and cables. Remove the case if that helps you clean around the screen, taking care around openings.
- Wipe with a clean microfiber cloth. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and gentle pressure. ASUS recommends microfiber for LCD/OLED panels; Apple recommends a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth for iPhone cleaning. Start dry unless the relevant instructions call for a slightly damp cloth. - Add moisture only if the maker permits it. Dampen the cloth lightly with the liquid specified for that surface. ASUS specifies a small amount of purified water for its panel guidance. Samsung gives separate device-specific instructions for permitted liquids and disinfectants. Never spray the phone directly, and keep liquid out of ports, speakers, and other openings: Samsung’s Galaxy phone cleaning guidance.
- Dry gently if needed. Use a second clean microfiber cloth to remove remaining moisture. Avoid hard rubbing, paper towels, and abrasive materials; abrasion can diminish a coating or scratch glass, and excessive force can damage a panel.
- Stop if residue remains. Do not escalate to solvents, stronger cleaners, or repeated force unless the phone or protector maker explicitly allows them. The safe choice depends on the surface.
Can you use alcohol on a matte phone screen?
There is no universal yes or no. ASUS warns against alcohol- or ammonia-based cleaners for its panels. Apple permits certain specified wipes for gentle disinfection of iPhone exterior surfaces, subject to its cautions; Samsung describes defined disinfectant examples for supported glass, ceramic, and metal surfaces. Those instructions apply to the named manufacturers’ devices and surfaces—not automatically to every matte finish or aftermarket protector. Apple states: “Don’t use cleaning products unless following the instructions for disinfecting your iPhone.” Read the exact maker’s directions before using alcohol or any other cleaner.

What to avoid
- Direct spraying: apply permitted liquid to the cloth, not the phone.
- Pressure and abrasive rubbing: these can scratch glass or wear down a coating.
- Unapproved cleaners: alcohol, ammonia, and household products are not safe by default for every matte surface.
- Paper towels or rough materials: use a clean, soft microfiber cloth instead. Belkin specifically cautions against paper towels for its Screen Skinz protector.
If the screen still feels sticky or looks marked
Check whether the residue is on the protector or the phone’s own glass before trying another cleaning method. If it is an added protector, follow that product’s care instructions; Belkin’s Screen Skinz guidance, for example, is product-specific and should not be treated as a rule for other protectors: Belkin’s Screen Skinz cleaning instructions. Huawei suggests replacing a sticky HD screen protector with a matte one as an option, but that is not a cleaning instruction for every phone or protector: Huawei’s guidance on a sticky HD screen protector. If you cannot identify the surface or its approved cleaner, stop and consult the exact phone or protector maker rather than experimenting with solvents.
