Turn off and disconnect your gaming mouse before cleaning. Wipe its shell with a soft, lint-free cloth that is only slightly damp, keep liquid away from the sensor and openings, and let the mouse dry completely before using it again. Clean the feet gently; replace them only when they are worn or damaged, and choose skates made for your exact mouse model.
What you need—and what to avoid
- A soft, lint-free cloth. Use only a little water or a cleaner that the manufacturer approves for your mouse.
- For dry debris, a handheld blower or compressed air may help if your mouse maker permits it. Keep a compressed-air can upright and follow its directions.
- Avoid bleach, acetone, nail-polish remover, strong solvents, and abrasive materials. Do not spray liquid onto the mouse.
Cleaning advice differs by brand, model, and finish. Logitech allows a lightly moistened cloth for its devices and describes certain alcohol swabs below 25% concentration for mice; that does not make alcohol safe for every coating or skate. SteelSeries warns that alcohol may damage paint, printed details, and protective coatings. Follow the guidance for your specific mouse rather than applying one maker’s cleaner advice to another.

Clean the mouse safely, step by step
- Power it down. Unplug a wired mouse. Switch off a wireless model and remove removable batteries if applicable. Logitech advises switching off and waiting 5–10 seconds before cleaning; SteelSeries also advises unplugging or switching off and removing removable AA or AAA batteries.
- Wipe the shell. Put a small amount of water or approved cleaner on the cloth, not on the mouse. Logitech’s guidance allows tap water or lens cleaner on a lightly moistened cloth; SteelSeries recommends a clean cloth and warm water, with mild dish detergent for spot-cleaning oil. Use minimal moisture, especially near seams and buttons.
- Clear exterior crevices gently. A toothpick can help with exterior nooks under SteelSeries’ guidance, but do not use it on the optical sensor lens or inside the mouse. For dry debris near the sensor, Razer allows a handheld blower or compressed air and says not to use liquid there. SteelSeries also lists canned air and cautions that the can should remain upright so liquid is not expelled.
- Clean the feet. Turn the mouse over and gently remove loose dust or debris from the contact surfaces. Do not scrape the skates or apply an unapproved cleaner. Razer recommends cleaning mouse feet regularly for the best possible glide.
- Let it dry fully. Leave the mouse disconnected until it is completely dry before reconnecting or using it.
How to keep the feet gliding smoothly
The feet—also called skates or pads—are the contact pieces on the underside that glide over the mouse pad. Dust and debris on that contact surface can interfere with a clean glide, so remove loose buildup gently as part of routine care. Logitech recommends regular cleaning and says weekly cleaning can help prevent hard-to-remove stains; that is care guidance, not a universal cleaning schedule for every mouse.

Some skates are made from PTFE, a material SteelSeries describes as having a low coefficient of friction. Not every gaming mouse uses the same skate material, so do not assume a cleaning method suitable for one set is suitable for another. The manufacturer guidance reviewed here does not establish a universal liquid or chemical recipe for cleaning skate surfaces.

When to replace mouse feet
Cleaning removes debris; it cannot restore worn material. Consider replacement if the feet are visibly worn, damaged, peeling, or no longer sit flat. This is a practical condition-based decision, not a manufacturer-published replacement interval.
Choose skates made for the exact mouse model. Razer says aftermarket PTFE, glass, or ceramic feet are acceptable if fitting them does not damage the mouse, but that does not mean every material is compatible with every model or better for every player. Razer also says it does not sell feet as a standalone spare part. If installation could damage your mouse, check the model’s support guidance or have the feet fitted by someone qualified.

Manufacturer guidance to check before cleaning
For model-specific care, consult Logitech’s cleaning guidance, Razer’s mouse-cleaning instructions, and the SteelSeries mouse-cleaning guide. SteelSeries also explains its PTFE glide skates; Razer’s care guidance covers its position on replacement feet. Instructions can differ by model and surface finish, so prioritize the directions for your own mouse.
