How to Choose Your Next Game: A Practical Checklist for Finding the Right Fit

Start with the experience you want, then verify platform, player suitability, controls, content, and the exact listing before buying.

Choose a game by starting with the experience you want, then checking whether its platform, controls, content, and purchase details fit the player. A genre or recommendation can help you find candidates, but it cannot tell you on its own whether a particular game will suit you.

Start with the kind of play you want

Before searching for a title, name the activity you are in the mood for. Do you want to explore, solve puzzles, compete, build, follow a story, play sports, or cooperate with someone? Then decide whether you want to play solo, with people beside you, or online—and whether you want a brief session or a game that asks for a longer commitment.

Genre is a useful first filter, not a guarantee of pace, difficulty, or feel. The ESRB recommends considering a genre and using gameplay videos or reviews to learn more about a game. Its parent tools and selection guidance can help you begin that check. A community discussion phrased the underlying question as “What’s the main factor you consider when choosing a new game?” Use that as a prompt to identify your own priorities, not as evidence that one factor works for every player.

Confirm platform and practical fit

Check that a candidate is available on hardware or an operating system you can use before investing in a recommendation. Availability and editions can differ across platforms, so verify the exact edition rather than assuming that a title’s name guarantees the same version everywhere. The ESRB ratings search includes platform filters, such as Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows/Mac categories; its interface and game data may change.

#1 Best Overall
GameStop Physical Gift Card
  • Redeemable at US GameStop, EB Games, Babbage's, Electronic Boutique, EBX, Planet X, and Software Etc. stores. Also redeemable online at and GameStop.com and EBGames.com.
  • Over 6,100 stores located throughout the United States.
  • GameStop. Power to the Players.
  • Redemption: Instore and Online
  • No returns and no refunds on gift cards.

Also consider the player’s comfort with speed, precision, reading, camera movement, and control complexity. If accessibility is important, look for the game’s own accessibility information and check whether its control scheme works for that player. Microsoft’s gaming accessibility guidance describes custom button mapping and controller choice as considerations. These are examples of options to investigate, not features guaranteed in every game.

Check age ratings, content, and online features

For games sold in North America, ESRB information combines age-rating categories, content descriptors, and interactive elements. Read the descriptors for subjects that matter to the player or caregiver; an age category alone may not answer every suitability question. ESRB says parents can use rating summaries for physical games and characterizes ratings as one factor in deciding whether a game is appropriate—not a substitute for a caregiver’s judgment. See ESRB’s ratings guide and explanation of its ratings process.

Rank #2

Interactive notices can cover features such as in-game purchases, user interaction, and location sharing. ESRB also identifies randomized-item purchases, including mechanisms such as loot boxes, gacha, item packs, prize wheels, and mystery awards. Its search filters can exclude some content or features. Whether any of these are acceptable depends on the player and household, so check the title’s notices rather than assuming all games—or all editions—handle them alike.

ESRB applies in North America. If you are shopping in another region, use the rating authority shown by your local store; age labels and systems vary by geography.

Preview the actual experience

Use gameplay footage and reviews to investigate the parts that matter to you: pacing, repetition, difficulty, interface, performance, or multiplayer conditions. A trailer or genre label may not show enough of the moment-to-moment play. Reviews can reveal other players’ experiences, but they are evidence to weigh—not a promise that your own experience will be identical.

Compare the shortlist on decision-changing factors

When more than one candidate remains, compare them against the same questions. These are practical decision axes, not a standardized scoring system.

Rank #4
Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
  • Redemption: Online
What to compare Questions to ask
Play experience Does the genre, pace, challenge, session length, and solo, cooperative, or competitive format fit what the player wants?
Practical fit Is it available on the player’s platform, and do the hardware, controls, and accessibility options work for them?
Suitability Do the rating, content descriptors, online interaction, and purchase features fit the player and household?
Confidence Do gameplay footage and reviews address the specific concerns that could change the decision?
Purchase Does the exact edition and format on the live listing match what you intend to buy, and are its current price, availability, and terms acceptable?

Do a final check on the exact listing

Before buying, check the retailer or platform page for the precise game, platform, edition, format, rating, included content, current price, and purchase terms. ESRB notes that ratings can be checked on online shopping product pages and on physical game boxes. A general recommendation cannot establish a listing’s current price, stock, edition contents, or return terms; those details can change.

ESRB reports that 83% of parents with children who play video games are aware of its ratings and 77% regularly check them before buying a game. The survey year is not stated on the cited ESRB parent-tools page, so these figures should not be treated as current, dated measurements.
