How to Choose Work Eye and Hearing Protection That Fits the Hazard

The best work eye and hearing protection depends on the hazard, correct markings, individual fit, and compatibility with the rest of your PPE.

There is no single best eyewear or hearing protector for every job. Choose equipment for the specific hazards, verify its applicable standard and markings, then check that it fits and works with the rest of your required PPE. A face shield alone is not a substitute for impact-rated eye protection, and a hearing protector’s package rating cannot tell you exactly how much protection an individual worker receives.

Start with the hazards your work actually creates

Identify each exposure before choosing PPE: flying particles or impact, dust, liquid splash, chemicals, potentially injurious light radiation, and noise. More than one may occur at the same time, and one protector may not address them all. OSHA’s Personal Protective Equipment selection guidance emphasizes matching protectors to hazards and considering other PPE; its general PPE requirements also call for assessing workplace hazards.

In general industry, OSHA’s hearing conservation program applies when employee exposure reaches an eight-hour time-weighted average of 85 dBA or higher. That threshold is a trigger for the program, not a universal safe/unsafe boundary for every moment of exposure. Employers should use workplace noise monitoring and applicable requirements to determine what protection and follow-up are needed. See OSHA’s occupational noise guidance.

What safety glasses should I wear for work?

Choose safety glasses for the specific hazard and coverage needed. Side protection or a wraparound design may suit some impact exposures, but style alone does not establish protection: verify the product’s markings and that it covers the hazard. Ordinary prescription glasses are not industrial eye protection merely because they are sturdy or have safety-style frames.

OSHA describes ANSI Z87.1 as addressing requirements, testing, marking, selection, care, and use of occupational and educational eye and face protectors. Its selection manual cites ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020. A consensus standard is not itself the same thing as an OSHA regulation; confirm which rules and task-specific standards apply to your workplace, and check the current product label. NIOSH notes that markings can include Z87 or Z87+ and prescription variants, and that older editions may use different markings. See OSHA’s eye and face protection standards page and the NIOSH/CDC bulletin The Manufacture and Selection of Eye Protection at Work.

When goggles are the better choice

Goggles can offer closer coverage for dust or splash when selected for that exposure. OSHA’s guidance discusses goggles for dust and indirect-ventilation goggles for splash and droplets; a close, appropriate fit matters. More restricted ventilation and working conditions can contribute to fogging, so consider visibility, cleaning, and wear duration without compromising the required protection. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and workplace requirements for the specific hazard.

Prescription eyewear and over-glasses options

If you need corrective lenses, use protective prescription eyewear or an over-glasses design intended for the required hazard. The design should not push ordinary glasses out of position, leave gaps, or interfere with the protective device’s alignment. Try the complete setup—prescription eyewear, goggles or safety glasses, and any other required equipment—before relying on it at work.

When a face shield is not enough

A face shield should not be treated as standalone impact protection. OSHA advises combining a shield with goggles or safety spectacles when impact protection is needed. Select the underlying eye protection and shield for the actual exposure; a shield’s broad face coverage does not automatically provide the close fit or impact protection required at the eyes. OSHA’s eye and face protection assessment explains selection by hazard.

Special optical hazards need task-specific protection

Welding, lasers, and electrical arcs can involve optical radiation or other hazards that ordinary safety glasses do not address. OSHA’s general eye-protection selection chart does not cover every such exposure. Follow the task-specific standard and qualified safety guidance rather than extrapolating from ordinary Z87.1 safety glasses. The applicable protection depends on the process and exposure, so do not choose a lens by appearance alone.

How to choose hearing protection for work

Compare earplugs, earmuffs, and canal caps by individual fit, exposure-specific attenuation, comfort, communication needs, and compatibility with other PPE. OSHA guidance calls for selecting protectors based on fit and manufacturers’ quality testing, evaluating their effectiveness for the workplace, and training workers in correct use. A number printed on a package cannot establish the protection a particular person receives in a particular job. See OSHA’s hearing protection guidance.

NIOSH’s 2025 update recommends individual fit-testing of hearing protection devices. That is NIOSH guidance, not a universal legal mandate. A fit test can help determine whether a protector is being worn effectively by the individual; it does not replace workplace noise assessment, correct use, or employer requirements. Read the NIOSH guidance on hearing protector fit testing.

Earplugs, earmuffs, and canal caps

Type What to consider
Earplugs Fit and insertion technique determine how well they work for the wearer. Check whether the selected device suits the exposure and whether the worker can insert it correctly and consistently.
Earmuffs Check seal and comfort as well as interference with helmets, hard hats, respirators, eyewear, and communication equipment.
Canal caps Consider individual fit and whether the design stays positioned during the task; check compatibility with other PPE.

These are selection considerations, not a ranking: the right option depends on the measured exposure, the wearer, and the full PPE setup. CDC/NIOSH notes that earmuffs and canal caps can interfere with hard hats, helmets, respirators, eye protection, and even some eyeglasses. It recommends that employers offer workers a selection of hearing protectors. See NIOSH’s hearing protection guidance.

Check fit and compatibility as a complete PPE setup

Comfort is a safety factor when it affects whether equipment stays in place and is worn correctly. A protector that slips, disturbs prescription-glasses alignment, blocks necessary movement, or interferes with another required item may not work as intended. Try the actual combination of eye protection, hearing protection, hard hat or helmet, respirator, and communication equipment that the task requires.

  • Confirm that eyewear covers the relevant impact, dust, splash, chemical, or radiation hazard.
  • Check that goggles seal appropriately where close coverage is needed and that the fit remains stable.
  • Make sure prescription lenses remain correctly positioned under protective eyewear.
  • Check that earmuff cushions maintain their seal and are not displaced by headwear, eyewear temples, or other equipment.
  • Assess whether the worker can hear necessary instructions or signals while wearing the selected hearing protection; use the workplace’s communication controls and procedures.
  • Consider visibility, fogging, cleaning, movement, and wear duration while preserving required protection.

OSHA’s selection guidance notes that protector styles and sizes vary; choose a comfortable fit that preserves vision and movement and is compatible with required equipment. When a combination does not fit, do not simply remove one required item: ask the employer or safety professional about compatible alternatives.

Inspect, clean, and replace protectors appropriately

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and workplace policy for inspection, cleaning, storage, and replacement. Before use, check for damage or wear that could compromise coverage, fit, visibility, or seal. Keep eyewear in suitable storage when it is not being worn; a storage case helps protect it between uses but is not protective equipment while the work is underway. OSHA’s selection and assessment guidance addresses care and fit considerations.

Why appropriate protection matters

NIOSH reported that approximately 118,000 occupational injuries in and around the eye were seen in emergency rooms in 2019, attributing the figure to its WorkRISQS data tool. The number describes emergency-room cases in that year, not all workplace eye injuries. NIOSH’s bulletin also reproduces OSHA’s eye-protection requirement at 29 CFR 1910.133(a)(1): “The employer shall ensure that each affected employee uses appropriate eye or face protection when exposed to eye or face hazards from flying particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, acids or caustic liquids, chemical gases or vapors, or potentially injurious light radiation.” See the NIOSH/CDC bulletin and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133.
