How to Choose Which Websites a Chrome Extension Can Access

Use Chrome’s Extensions menu for a quick access change, or add and remove allowed websites in an extension’s Details settings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can limit a Chrome extension to sites you choose from its access menu or its Details page. In desktop Chrome, open the Extensions menu for a quick change, or use the extension’s settings to create an allowed-site list.

Change an extension’s site access from the Extensions menu

  1. Open Chrome and select the Extensions icon.
  2. Select More next to the extension, then point to This can read and change site data.
  3. Choose whether it can access a site when you select the extension, on the current site, or on all sites.

The choices available can depend on the extension’s requested permissions. Chrome Help describes the “When you select the extension” option as allowing access to the current site in the open tab or window when you select the extension. Google Chrome Help: Install and manage extensions.

Allow access only on specific websites

  1. In Chrome, open More → Extensions → Manage extensions.
  2. Find the extension and select Details.
  3. Under Permissions, set site access to On specific sites.
  4. Under Allowed sites, select Add and grant access to a site.

To remove a site from the list, select More next to that site and choose Remove. If you do not see the Allowed sites controls, first change the overall site-access setting to On specific sites. See Chrome’s extension-management instructions.

Which access level should you choose?

Setting How access works Best fit
When you select the extension Access is available on the current open tab or window when you select the extension. Closing that tab or window ends the access; select the extension again to turn it on. You use the extension manually and do not need it to run automatically.
On the current site / On specific sites The extension can access the current site or the particular sites you add to its allowed list. You want automatic operation, but only on a limited set of websites.
On all sites The extension can automatically read and change data on all sites covered by its requested host permissions. You need its features to work automatically across the sites it supports.

The quick menu calls the limited option On [current site]; the Details page uses On specific sites for managing an allowed list. Start with the narrowest scope that supports the feature you want, then expand it if needed. This is a practical privacy choice, not a guarantee that every extension will work with restricted access. See Chrome Help and Chrome for Developers’ explanation of host permissions.

What restricting access can change

Site access, also called host permissions, can affect content scripts and extension operations involving page data or network requests. Chrome for Developers documents effects on APIs including webRequest, cookies, tabs.executeScript() and tabs.insertCSS(), as well as cross-origin requests. Without access to a site, a site-dependent operation may fail or wait for you to grant permission. Some operations may require refreshing a page before they can take effect.

In practice, restricting access can affect features that automatically modify pages, intercept requests or work across multiple sites. The exact impact depends on the extension’s design and requested permissions; consult the extension’s own documentation for feature-specific requirements. Chrome’s developer page is a Manifest V2 transition guide, and Chrome Web Store no longer accepts Manifest V2 extensions, so use it for the host-permission concepts rather than as a guide to today’s interface.

Chrome Help also notes that changing site access affects matching extension host permissions, but not extensions that change lower-level network access through VPN or proxy settings. Chrome Help.
