For stronger everyday privacy, start by preventing traffic from escaping the VPN tunnel: use a supported protocol, enable a kill switch or operating-system lockdown, and check that DNS and IPv6 traffic are routed through the VPN or blocked. Add features such as split tunneling, multihop, and obfuscation only when they address a specific need. Settings cannot make an untrustworthy provider safe, and a VPN does not make you anonymous.
Understand what a VPN does—and who you trust
A VPN routes traffic through servers controlled by the VPN provider. That can protect traffic from people on an untrusted Wi-Fi network, but it shifts trust from the local network or internet service provider to the VPN provider. The Federal Trade Commission explains that a VPN app generally does not make you entirely anonymous: websites and services may still identify you through account logins, cookies, device information, or other signals. FTC consumer guidance is dated 2018, but this basic trust tradeoff remains relevant.

So choose settings to reduce specific exposure, not to create anonymity. The provider’s privacy policy, logging practices, transparency, and security are as important as the controls in its app.

Choose a supported protocol
Use a modern protocol the provider currently supports and documents. Privacy Guides includes WireGuard and OpenVPN among the protocols it considers in its VPN guidance. Privacy Guides’ VPN overview can help frame the comparison; a protocol name alone does not establish that a provider’s implementation is trustworthy or correctly configured. Avoid assuming a protocol will be faster without measurements for your device, location, and network.

Enable fail-closed protection
A kill switch is intended to stop ordinary internet traffic if the VPN disconnects, rather than letting it continue over your normal connection. On Android, the system can use an always-on VPN and a setting to block connections that do not use the VPN. The exact labels and behavior can vary by Android version and device. Google’s Android VPN instructions describe these system controls.
Fail-closed behavior trades availability for containment: if the tunnel fails, apps that require internet access may stop working until the VPN reconnects or the block is disabled. That interruption is expected, not proof that the VPN is broken.

Check DNS and IPv6
Confirm that DNS requests—the lookups that translate domain names into network addresses—go through the VPN or a resolver you deliberately selected inside the tunnel. A separate DNS service or a browser’s secure-DNS setting may route lookups differently, so check the settings of the VPN client, operating system, and relevant apps.
Also confirm how IPv6 is handled. A client should route IPv6 through the tunnel or block it rather than letting it bypass the VPN. Proton VPN, for example, recommends leaving IPv6 leak protection enabled in its own app; that guidance describes Proton’s implementation, not every VPN client. Proton VPN’s IPv6 leak protection guide explains its setting.

- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
- 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.
- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
Do not treat an active VPN icon as proof that every traffic path is protected. The result depends on the client and operating system, so verify the relevant DNS and IPv6 controls for the combination you use.
Use optional settings only for the problem they solve
Split tunneling
Split tunneling deliberately excludes selected apps or traffic from the VPN. An excluded app uses your ordinary connection, so its traffic does not receive the VPN’s routing protection. Use this only when an app or local service needs a direct connection and you accept that consequence. Private Internet Access’ split-tunneling guide documents how the control works in its client.

Multihop
Multihop routes traffic through more than one VPN server. Consider it when the extra routing separation addresses a defined concern. It does not remove the need to trust the VPN operator, and it is not a universal privacy requirement. Privacy Guides lists multihop as an option rather than a baseline setting.

Obfuscation
Obfuscation is relevant when a network blocks VPN connections or uses traffic inspection to identify them. It is mainly a tool for restrictive networks and censorship-circumvention needs, not a general-purpose anonymity switch.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Local network access
Allow access to local devices only if you need them—for example, to print or cast to a device on the same network. Disabling local network access can reduce exposure to nearby devices on a public network, but may prevent local services from working. Private Internet Access documents this option for its own client in the PIA kill-switch and network settings guide.
Debug logs and telemetry
Leave troubleshooting logs off unless you need them to diagnose a problem, and review what the provider says it collects or sends. PIA’s client documentation describes debug logs and opt-in usage statistics; those are examples of client-specific controls, not features every VPN offers. See the PIA settings documentation for its implementation.

A feature label is not evidence that a control works correctly. A 2022 NDSS VPNalyzer study reported that 18 VPN providers leaked all user traffic during the study’s tunnel-failure tests. That result applies to the services and tests examined at that time; it is not a current market-wide failure rate. The VPNalyzer study illustrates why implementation and testing matter alongside advertised features.
When a router-level VPN makes sense
A VPN-capable router can apply VPN routing at the network level for devices connected through it, which may be useful when individual devices cannot run a VPN app. GL.iNet’s firmware documentation covers OpenVPN and WireGuard client setup and a feature that blocks non-VPN traffic. The instructions are firmware-version-specific; check the documentation for the firmware and router you use rather than assuming every model has the same controls. GL.iNet’s VPN dashboard guide describes its setup options.
