There is no universal typeface or pixel size that guarantees readability across platforms and screens.
Start with what the text needs to do
A name card, a short headline, and live captions have different jobs. Decide the role before choosing a typeface or styling: short display text can establish hierarchy, while captions need to communicate speech and relevant sounds accurately and continuously. W3C WAI advises considering font family, size, and contrast between text and background for video overlays: Audio Content and Video Content.

Separate display text from captions
- Headlines and titles: Make the subject or segment easy to identify at a glance.
- Names and labels: Identify a speaker, object, or status without requiring color recognition alone.
- Captions: Represent dialogue and relevant non-speech information, including speaker identification and significant sound effects when needed.
These roles call for a deliberate hierarchy, but that hierarchy is a production choice—not a typographic formula prescribed by W3C.

No source establishes one typeface as easiest to read in every stream or video. Judge candidate fonts in context: the language and symbols you use, the size at which viewers will see them, the footage behind them, and how much picture area the treatment takes up. A style that suits a large title may not work for dense captions.

Compare candidate treatments using these practical criteria:
- Legibility over changing footage: Does the text remain distinguishable as the shot changes?
- Contrast: Can viewers separate the letters from the background in the intended position?
- Hierarchy: Can a viewer tell a heading from a name label or caption?
- Picture coverage: Does the text avoid covering important visual information?
- Channel consistency: Does the treatment fit the channel without making text harder to read?
- Language and symbols: Does the typeface render the characters your content needs?
How big should text be on a video?
There is no universal pixel size or line-length formula established for live video. Effective size depends on output resolution, platform scaling, device, viewing distance, language, and text purpose. Preview the video at representative playback sizes rather than judging only in the editing canvas. Check both short display text and captions, since they have different reading demands.

Check contrast on the real footage
Video backgrounds can change from frame to frame. A combination that works on one shot may disappear against a bright, busy, or similarly colored shot later. Preview the intended treatment across representative scenes and choose a text-and-background treatment that remains distinguishable. Do not assume a particular font weight, outline, or color will work on every scene.
For web content within its scope, WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.3 sets a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large-scale text, subject to the criterion’s exceptions. See the WCAG 2.1 contrast minimum criterion. These are accessibility thresholds for applicable web content, not a complete guarantee of video readability in every platform, device, or viewing setup.

Do not make color carry meaning by itself
If color identifies a speaker, category, or status, provide another cue as well—for example, a name, written label, or shape. Viewers should not have to distinguish colors to understand who is speaking or what a marker means. W3C’s guidance on Use of Color explains this accessibility principle.
Position text without hiding the picture
Check text against the actual composition. Keep overlays away from faces, charts, demonstrations, and any other visual information viewers need. Captions have an explicit placement consideration: W3C says, “Captions should not obscure or obstruct relevant information in the video.” See Understanding Success Criterion 1.2.4: Captions (Live).

Do not assume one position will suit every shot. Review scenes where the important visual information moves or where the usual text area becomes occupied, then adjust placement or the composition as needed.

Treat captions as content, not decoration
Captions are synchronized text for audio content. They include dialogue and relevant non-speech information, such as speaker identification and significant sound effects; a caption style cannot make up for missing information. WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.2.4 requires captions for live audio content in synchronized media, subject to the criterion’s scope and notes. Consult the criterion text for its requirements and qualifications.

Captions are one part of accessible video publishing. W3C WAI also covers transcripts, description of visual information, sign language, and accessible media players.
A practical review before publishing
- List each text role. Identify headlines, names or labels, and captions separately.
- Choose a treatment for each role. Consider font family, size, contrast, hierarchy, language support, and how much of the picture it covers.
- Preview it over representative footage. Include different backgrounds and shots with important visual details in likely text areas.
- Check contrast where WCAG applies. Use the 4.5:1 ordinary-text and 3:1 large-scale-text thresholds in context, including the criterion’s exceptions.
- Check meaning and placement. Make color-coded distinctions available through another cue, and keep captions and overlays from obscuring relevant information.
- Review at realistic playback sizes. Test the intended delivery format and representative devices instead of relying on the editor preview alone.
