1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose transmission-line engineering software by matching it to the project stage, the utility’s engineering criteria, its survey and terrain data, required deliverables, and the systems and people that must use the results. For detailed overhead-line design, PLS-CADD is a documented integrated option; Optioneer addresses early route planning, while PLS-GRID is for enterprise management and analysis of overhead-line models. They serve different scopes, so there is no evidence-based universal winner.
Start by defining the job the software must do
Before comparing feature lists, identify whether the need is corridor planning, detailed line design, a narrow sag-tension calculation, or management of a portfolio of existing line models. A product suited to one stage may not cover another. Record the project’s required inputs, engineering analyses, outputs, integrations, and users so vendors can demonstrate the same workflows against the same requirements.

Detailed overhead-line design
Bentley describes PLS-CADD as “an all-in-one computer-aided design and drafting program used for the structural and geometric design of overhead electric transmission, distribution, and telecommunication lines.” Its product material lists terrain and line modeling, survey-data workflows, loading combinations, sag-tension, clearance and thermal-rating analyses, structure modeling and spotting, materials, and plan-and-profile drafting. Treat these as capabilities to verify for the proposed edition and configuration, not as proof that every function or calculation method is included in every purchase.

Early route alternatives
Continuum Industries describes Optioneer as an early-stage planning environment for combining spatial data, infrastructure modeling, optimization, automation, and decision support. Its stated role includes exporting into later survey, engineering, and permitting workflows. The available product description does not establish it as a replacement for detailed conductor sag-tension, clearance, or structure engineering.

Enterprise model management
Bentley positions PLS-GRID as an enterprise grid data-management product that uses PLS-CADD and related overhead-line models for centralized access, collaboration, and grid-wide analytics. That makes it relevant when the utility needs to manage or analyze a portfolio of line models; it is not the same scope as project-level detailed design.
Single-span calculation needs
Power Line Systems offers PLS-CADD/Ultralite at no cost for quick single-span conductor or wire modeling, sag-tension reports, and stringing charts. The vendor says projects are saved locally, the application uses an internet-served license and cable-model library, and technical support is not included. This is a limited calculation or evaluation path, not a documented full-line design replacement. Check current operating-system compatibility and terms before installation.

Compare the options against utility requirements
| Decision area | Questions to answer | How to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| Project scope | Is the need early corridor planning, detailed overhead-line design, a single-span calculation, or enterprise model management? | Ask the vendor to demonstrate the intended workflow end to end. Confirm that planning, design, and portfolio-management functions are not being treated as interchangeable. |
| Engineering analyses | Does the proposed edition support the required sag-tension methods, weather and load cases, clearances, thermal ratings, and structure analyses? | Verify edition-level availability and calculation methods, then have qualified line-design engineers check representative results against utility criteria. |
| Codes and criteria | Can engineers configure the adopted codes, local weather cases, safety factors, and internal utility criteria? | Review the actual criteria files and their notes. Power Line Systems warns that generic files may need local and utility-specific adjustments and recommends qualified engineering review. |
| Survey and terrain | Can the software use the utility’s LiDAR, photogrammetry, total-station, GIS, imagery, and coordinate-system data? | Import representative files, including a challenging terrain or coordinate-system case, and check the resulting model with the survey and engineering teams. |
| Deliverables and exchange | Can it produce the required plan-and-profile sheets, material lists, reports, and CAD, GIS, or asset-system handoffs? | Test the utility’s templates and exact exchange formats. Bentley describes automated drawings, reports, and GIS/CAD compatibility for PLS-CADD, but the required formats still need confirmation. |
| Team and deployment | Do users need desktop engineering, collaboration, network or virtual-machine use, or enterprise browser and mobile access? | Demonstrate the required environment with the utility’s IT and security teams; verify current deployment options and license terms with the vendor. |
| Implementation and cost | What will licenses, data preparation, migration, training, support, and ongoing administration require? | Request current commercial terms and estimate total project and lifecycle costs. Comparable current prices are not established in the cited product material. |
Run a proof of fit with real project data
A feature list cannot establish that a package fits a utility’s actual files, criteria, drawing standards, or handoffs. Use a representative project slice and have the engineering team define the expected outputs before the demonstration or trial.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Assemble a test package. Include representative survey and terrain files, coordinate-system information, an applicable route or line model, utility criteria, and the CAD/GIS or asset-system deliverable requirements.
- Import and inspect the data. Confirm that the software reads the actual formats and coordinate systems, preserves the expected geometry, and supports the terrain and survey workflow the team uses.
- Run required engineering cases. Have qualified engineers verify the required loading combinations, sag-tension, clearances, thermal-rating, and structure analyses against utility-approved criteria. Do not assume a generic criteria file meets local needs.
- Produce the handoffs. Generate the required drawings, reports, material information, and exchange files, then check them against utility templates and receiving systems.
- Test the working environment. Confirm that the intended users can collaborate and operate the solution in the utility’s required desktop, network, virtual-machine, browser, or mobile setup.
- Document exceptions. Record unsupported formats, manual workarounds, edition dependencies, training needs, and unresolved terms before comparing proposals.
Keep engineering authority with the utility
Software can provide calculation and modeling capabilities, but it does not establish project compliance by itself. Power Line Systems describes its generic criteria files as minimum requirements for referenced codes and warns that weather and structural loading cases may need local and utility-specific adjustment. The utility’s qualified engineers should review and modify criteria as needed and retain responsibility for project-specific compliance decisions.

Plan for adoption, support, and lifecycle costs
Evaluate the work required to prepare data, configure criteria and templates, train users, support the deployment, and maintain model information—not just the initial license. Bentley recommends three days of basic and two days of advanced PLS-CADD training and describes support for active subscribers. Treat those as vendor guidance, and verify current training availability, support coverage, subscription conditions, deployment options, and commercial terms directly with the vendor. The cited material does not establish comparable current pricing across these products.
