Then total the hardware, likely game purchases, any membership you will actually use, and necessary storage or accessories. In the U.S., official prices checked October 7, 2026 put Nintendo Switch 2 at $499.99, while PS5 models start at $599.99; Microsoft announced Xbox price increases effective August 1, 2026, but its notice does not give exact resulting U.S. prices by model. Retail prices, bundles, stock and prices outside the U.S. vary.
Start with how and what you play
There is no single best console for every budget. A lower hardware price can be a poor fit if the games you want are elsewhere, or if you need to buy games, storage or accessories to make the system work for you.

- Handheld and TV play: Nintendo Switch 2 is a hybrid system that can be played handheld or connected to a TV through its dock.
- TV-based play: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are home-console families. Choose between them by the games and services that matter to you, then compare the specific models available where you live.
Make a short list of must-play games, multiplayer games and titles for other people in your household. Check that each game is available on the console you are considering and whether it is sold separately or included in a membership. A broad platform reputation is less useful than a verified list of the games you will actually play.

Use this worksheet for each candidate: hardware + games you expect to buy in the next year + membership you expect to use + needed storage or accessories − value of compatible games and accessories you already own. Fill it in with current local prices. It is a planning method, not a universal ownership-cost estimate; your game list and play habits determine the result.

Hardware and edition
Official U.S. manufacturer prices checked October 7, 2026 are listed below. They are recommended retail prices, not guaranteed checkout prices; taxes, bundles, retailer discounts and availability can differ. Confirm the exact model and price in your region before buying.
| System or model | Official U.S. price and timing | What the figure does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | $499.99 MSRP, effective September 1, 2026 | System price, not a bundle; Nintendo raised it from $449.99 and cited market conditions expected to persist over the medium to long term. Nintendo price update |
| PlayStation 5 Digital Edition | $599.99, effective April 2, 2026 | Manufacturer-recommended U.S. retail price. Sony price update |
| PlayStation 5 standard | $649.99, effective April 2, 2026 | Manufacturer-recommended U.S. retail price. Sony price update |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | $899.99, effective April 2, 2026 | Manufacturer-recommended U.S. retail price. Sony price update |
| Xbox Series X|S | Exact resulting U.S. MSRP by model not stated in Microsoft’s opened notice | Microsoft announced worldwide changes effective August 1, 2026: a US$100 increase for 512 GB models and US$150 for 1 TB models, and said it would sunset the 2 TB model. Do not use the increase alone to infer a model’s current price. Microsoft’s Xbox price announcement |
For Sony’s U.S. prices, the standard PS5 is $50 more than the Digital Edition at the stated MSRPs. Whether that difference is worthwhile depends on whether you will use physical games or media; compare your actual buying habits and current listings rather than assuming one edition always costs less overall.

Games and memberships
Price the games you expect to buy, not an imagined average collection. If you are considering a game catalog or online membership, verify its current plan name, price, terms and included games on the platform’s official page. Nintendo’s U.S. annual price table lists these Nintendo Switch Online prices; Nintendo notes that prices vary by country and membership length:
| Nintendo Switch Online plan | Individual, annual | Family, annual |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $19.99 | $34.99 |
| Expansion Pack | $49.99 | $79.99 |
These are Nintendo’s listed U.S. annual membership prices, accessed in 2026. Add only the plan you expect to use, and check whether a specific game or feature requires it; do not assume every game does. Current PlayStation and Xbox membership prices are not established here, so check their official pages before comparing total costs.

Storage and useful extras
Include only add-ons you need: extra storage, another controller for local multiplayer, or a headset or charging accessory you know you will use. Check the required storage format and whether an existing accessory works with the exact console model. For Switch 2, Nintendo specifies microSD Express cards for storage; standard microSD cards and the original Switch dock are not compatible. Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility information
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide whether your existing library saves money
Before counting an old game or controller as a saving, identify the exact title or accessory and verify compatibility. Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch software, but some games may not work or may not be fully compatible. Joy-Con and Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly, but many accessories do not carry over; the original dock and standard microSD cards are not compatible. Use Nintendo’s compatibility information to check individual games and accessories rather than assuming everything transfers.

Choose between the main options
Nintendo Switch 2: investigate it if handheld play matters
Switch 2 is the leading option to investigate when you genuinely want to play handheld, want Nintendo’s games, or expect to share play in a household. Its hybrid form is a practical difference, not a guarantee of lower total cost. Include any games you plan to buy and account for storage or accessories that will not carry over from an older system.

PS5 Digital Edition or standard PS5: decide whether you will use discs
If the PlayStation library is your priority, compare the Digital Edition and standard PS5 based on whether physical games or media are part of your plans. The current U.S. manufacturer MSRP difference is $50. Check the specific console’s disc-drive configuration and any current listing before treating that gap as a saving.
Xbox Series S or Series X: compare the exact model and price
Xbox may be a fit if your existing library, interest in Game Pass, or particular Xbox games are central to the decision. Microsoft describes Series S as its lowest-cost Xbox path, but that description does not establish its exact current price. A Best Buy comparison guide describes Series X as having a 4K Blu-ray disc drive and Series S as a smaller, digital-only model; treat that as secondary feature context and verify the exact model specifications with Microsoft before buying. Microsoft’s August 2026 announcement gives increase amounts, not resulting U.S. prices by model, so check current local listings.
Set a first-year ceiling before you shop
- Set your maximum first-year spend. A hardware-only ceiling can hide the cost of games or a membership you expect to buy.
- Write down your must-play games. Verify each title on the relevant platform and add the prices you would actually pay.
- Choose a specific model and edition. Compare disc and digital versions where offered, and confirm which accessories or storage you need.
- Check compatibility. Look up existing games and accessories individually before subtracting their value from your budget.
- Recheck current local prices. Manufacturer MSRPs, retailer prices, bundles, taxes and stock are not interchangeable; confirm the final listing on the day you buy.
For broad Xbox franchise and Game Pass context, Best Buy’s Series X and Series S guide is a secondary reference, not a current catalog or substitute for checking an individual game’s availability. Nintendo describes Switch 2 as “the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go” in its April 2, 2025 launch announcement; that is Nintendo’s characterization of its own product, not an independent value assessment.
