What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start with the distance from your usual seated eye position to the screen, then use viewing-angle guidance to shortlist sizes. The right choice also depends on resolution, what you watch, how the room is arranged, and whether the complete TV—not just its diagonal—will fit.
Measure your viewing distance first
Measure from where your eyes normally are when seated to the planned screen position. If you use more than one seat, measure the most common viewing spot and note the range. Room dimensions alone are a poor substitute: two rooms of the same size can have very different seat-to-screen distances.

Choose a viewing angle that suits how you watch
RTINGS frames its size guidance by horizontal field of view: 30° for mixed use, 40° for cinema, and 62° as an immersive reference. In its chart, a 55-inch TV corresponds to 7 ft 5 in at 30° and 5 ft 6 in at 40°; the 62° reference is 3 ft 4 in. These are different viewing targets, not competing measurements of a single ideal distance. RTINGS describes its recommended size as the smallest it would consider comfortable for a given space, rather than the perfect size for everyone. See RTINGS’ size-to-distance guidance.

A wider field of view can make films or games feel more enveloping, but a very large image may be uncomfortable or make it harder to take in the whole scene. A narrower view can feel less immersive and make fine detail or game interface elements harder to see. Choose for your own comfort and content, rather than treating the most immersive option as automatically best.
Account for resolution—and understand why charts differ
Higher resolution generally makes close viewing more practical because individual pixels are less apparent. But resolution does not decide how immersive a screen feels, so a 4K distance chart and a cinema field-of-view chart answer different questions.

| Guidance | What it measures | Example |
|---|---|---|
| RTINGS field of view | Viewing angle targets for mixed use, cinema, and immersion | 55 inches: 7 ft 5 in at 30° mixed use; 5 ft 6 in at 40° cinema; 3 ft 4 in at 62° |
| Samsung Canada distance table | Separate general (non-4K) and closer 4K reference distances | 55 inches: 1.7 m (5.5 ft) general; 1.4 m (4.6 ft) for 4K |
| Sony Support minimum-distance reference | 4K distance based on 1.5 times screen height; HD distance based on three times screen height | 65-inch 4K: about 47 inches (3.94 ft); 55-inch HD: 83 inches (6.92 ft) |
The values are not interchangeable. Sony’s 65-inch 4K minimum-distance reference is much closer than RTINGS’ 30° mixed-use distance for that size, because one is a manufacturer minimum-distance reference and the other describes a wider viewing angle. Sony explicitly calls its distances minimums for reference and says to adjust them for preference and room layout. Its Support article was last modified January 17, 2025. Its broader rules of thumb are viewing distance in meters × 25 for an approximate screen size in inches, and screen size in inches × 1.2 for a general viewing distance in inches. Treat these as rough estimates; Samsung says to account for resolution, layout, planned use, and budget. View Samsung Canada’s size guide.

Sony’s consumer selection page offers another general rule: TV height equals two-thirds of the distance between the TV and viewer. That rule has a different framing from Sony Support’s minimum-distance guidance, so do not combine them as though they were one precision standard. See Sony’s TV selection guide.
Check whether the TV will physically fit
A stated screen size is the diagonal measurement of the display, not the TV’s width. Bezel and stand dimensions vary, even between sets with the same diagonal. Before choosing a model, compare its manufacturer-listed measurements with the actual usable space.

- Measure the available width and height of the wall, stand, or cabinet.
- Check the TV’s full width, height, and depth, including the stand if you will use one.
- Allow for placement and any clearance the location requires.
- Confirm that the viewing position still gives you the distance and angle you intended.
RTINGS also advises checking the complete dimensions listed by the manufacturer rather than relying on an approximate screen-size conversion. Its guide explains the size-and-distance relationship.
Compare the remaining sizes by use and comfort
If more than one size fits your distance and space, choose based on the viewing experience you prefer. A larger screen may suit movies, sports, or gaming; a smaller one may feel more appropriate for casual viewing or a compact layout. Sit at your normal position and consider whether you can comfortably take in the screen without excessive eye or head movement.

- Budget and features: Compare these after a size fits your distance and placement; do not stretch the room fit just to reach a particular model.
Samsung’s guidance likewise emphasizes that there is no single size that is always better: viewing distance, room layout, available space, habits, and budget all matter. Samsung’s guide discusses those trade-offs.
