Then choose a rack position based on the cooking mode, food height, and how close the food should be to the heating elements. A higher rack is often used for broiling and top browning; a lower or middle rack is generally a better starting point for baking and taller foods. These are starting points—not universal rules—because rack labels, element layouts, and presets vary by model.
Choose the cooking mode before setting the temperature
Bake, convection bake, broil, and toast may use different heating elements, fans, rack arrangements, and controls. Some toast or bagel modes use shade or quantity settings instead of a conventional oven temperature. Follow the recipe and the manual for the specific mode you select; a temperature that makes sense for baking may not apply to a toast preset or broil function.

For a countertop oven, KitchenAid recommends checking the owner’s manual for appliance-specific directions. Its general guidance places the top rack for many broiling, cookie, and toast tasks, and the second rack for most cooking and baking, including taller items. Translate those descriptions to your oven’s own rack slots: positions or letters do not necessarily match across brands. KitchenAid’s countertop-oven guidance explains the general approach.
Set a recipe temperature, not a universal toaster-oven temperature
Use the recipe as your starting point, then check whether your chosen mode or appliance manual calls for a different method. A manufacturer’s preset is not a general rule for every toaster oven.

For example, Frigidaire lists defaults of 325°F for Bake, 450°F for Broil, 350°F for Cookies, and 450°F for Pizza on its support page. Those are settings for the product family covered by that page, not universal recommendations. Check your own model’s controls and manual before applying them. Frigidaire’s toaster-oven mode defaults illustrates how much settings can vary.
Match rack position to the food and the browning goal
The rack changes how close food sits to the heating elements. Use the manual’s rack diagram first; then consider the height of the food and whether the goal is to cook it through or brown the top.

- Broiling or top browning: A higher position is often appropriate because it places food closer to the upper element. Follow the manual’s broil procedure and leave the clearance it specifies.
- Ordinary baking: A lower or middle position is a useful starting point. KitchenAid describes its second rack as the general choice for most cooking and baking, but your model’s manual takes precedence.
- Tall foods: Choose a lower position when needed to provide room above the food and maintain safe clearance from the heating element.
- Cookies and toast: KitchenAid includes these among tasks that may use a higher rack on its countertop ovens. Treat this as brand guidance, not a slot map for every appliance.
For model-specific diagrams and procedures, Oster’s 2020 toaster-oven manual shows that bake, convection, and broil can have separate instructions and rack placement details.

Adjust your approach when using convection
Convection uses a fan to circulate hot air and can cook food faster. Oster describes its convection-bake fan as circulating air so food cooks evenly and faster; that describes the manual’s appliance, not a guaranteed result for every model or recipe. Consult the Oster manual for its mode instructions.

Hamilton Beach’s manual gives two ways to adapt a conventional bake recipe for convection: keep the temperature and shorten the cooking period, or keep the conventional time and lower the temperature by about 25°F. That is Hamilton Beach guidance, not a universal conversion. Check your appliance manual and the recipe before changing either setting. Hamilton Beach’s use-and-care manual provides its convection advice.
Check clearance and broiling precautions
Before loading the oven, check the manual for space between food and the heating elements, plus any broiling warnings. Hamilton Beach’s cited manual calls for at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) of clearance between food and the heating element. Oster’s manual warns not to leave its countertop oven unattended during broiling. Both instructions apply to their respective appliance manuals; follow the requirements for your own model.

A quick setup checklist
- Read the recipe: Note its temperature, time, and whether it assumes conventional or convection baking.
- Select the mode: Use the recipe’s specified mode when available; check the manual if you are unsure what elements or fan operate.
- Choose the rack: Use the model’s rack diagram, accounting for food height and the desired distance from the upper element.
- Set temperature and preheat as directed: Some controls are presets rather than freely adjustable oven temperatures, so confirm how your model works.
- Check clearance and safety notes: Leave the required space around the food and observe any broiling or unattended-operation warning.
When comparing recipes or toaster ovens, compare the mode, fan use, rack position, food height, recipe temperature, and clearance instructions together. A temperature alone does not tell you whether two settings will cook in the same way.
