For the current 13.8-inch and 15-inch Surface Laptop 8th Edition, choose screen size first, then match the processor, memory, and storage in the exact local listing to your workload. Microsoft has announced the generation and its headline claims, but its announcement does not provide a complete consumer SKU table—so verify RAM, SSD, processor variant, price, and availability before you buy.
Which Surface Laptop generation is current?
As of October 7, 2026, Microsoft’s announced consumer 13.8-inch and 15-inch Surface Laptop 8th Edition models use Snapdragon X2. Microsoft announced them on June 16 with a starting MSRP of $1,599. That is the announced starting price, not a guarantee that every size or configuration costs that amount in your market. Microsoft’s 8th Edition announcement is the source for the launch details.

There is also a smaller 13-inch Surface Laptop 2nd Edition with Snapdragon X2 Plus, announced September 23. Microsoft said availability would begin October 13, 2026, in select markets; it is therefore forthcoming as of October 7, not yet generally available. Microsoft announced a $1,199 starting MSRP and up to 22.5 hours of battery life for this model. Treat the price as an announced starting MSRP and the battery figure as a manufacturer claim, not a promise of typical use. Check Microsoft’s 13-inch announcement for market-specific availability.

Choose a screen size for how you work and carry it
13.8-inch: prioritize portability
Consider the 13.8-inch 8th Edition if you carry your laptop often and prefer a smaller screen. Confirm the dimensions and weight on the exact local product listing before comparing how portable it is; the launch information cited here does not establish a numerical weight comparison.
15-inch: prioritize workspace
Consider the 15-inch model if you want more display area for side-by-side documents, spreadsheets, or application windows. A larger screen can make desk work more comfortable, but verify the actual dimensions and weight if you will carry it regularly.

- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution

13-inch 2nd Edition: a smaller forthcoming option
If a 13-inch device is your preference, the announced 2nd Edition may be relevant, but its stated availability starts October 13 in select markets. Check that it has actually gone on sale where you live before treating it as an available alternative.

Microsoft’s 8th Edition announcement identifies Snapdragon X2 but does not provide a full consumer SKU-by-SKU processor matrix. Do not infer which X2 variant comes in a particular size from prior-generation configurations or broad product-family labels. Confirm the processor listed for the exact model you intend to buy.
Microsoft says the 8th Edition offers up to 58% more graphics performance than the previous 7th Edition, based on Microsoft’s 3DMark Steel Nomad Lite comparison. This is a manufacturer test claim, not an independent comparison across every current size and SKU; it does not by itself establish how a particular application will perform. The comparison is described in Microsoft’s launch announcement.

Choose enough memory for your multitasking
Basic browsing and document work generally need less memory headroom than keeping many demanding applications open or working with large projects. Think about your busiest typical session—not just the number of apps you use occasionally—and select a listed capacity that leaves room for that workload.
The reviewed 8th Edition launch announcement does not state RAM capacities for every consumer SKU. Older Surface Laptop listings show prior-generation capacities, but those are not proof of what is offered on the new generation. Check the memory field on the precise retailer or Microsoft Store listing rather than carrying forward an older specification.

Size storage for the files you keep locally
Estimate the space needed for installed applications, offline files, media, and active project assets. If you work with large media or development projects, allow more room than a laptop used mainly for documents and cloud-synced files. Compare the actual SSD capacities offered for your chosen SKU and check the listing’s terms for serviceability or upgrades; the 8th Edition announcement does not enumerate consumer SSD options.
Do not use the predecessor-generation storage choices displayed on Microsoft’s general specifications page as a substitute for a current 8th Edition listing. Storage can vary by size and configuration, and the exact available options are not established by the launch announcement.
Interpret battery-life and performance claims carefully
For the 13.8-inch 8th Edition, Microsoft claims up to 20 hours of battery life; for the 15-inch, up to 19 hours. Microsoft specifies local video playback testing and warns that actual battery life varies. Those figures are not typical-use guarantees: workload, settings, network use, and configuration affect endurance. They are useful as manufacturer test claims, but they cannot tell you exactly how long your own mix of calls, browsing, and demanding applications will run.

The 13-inch 2nd Edition’s announced up-to-22.5-hour figure is also a Microsoft claim. Consider it alongside the specific testing information and configuration on the final local listing, rather than comparing headline numbers as if they were results from a common independent test.
Verify the exact listing before buying
Microsoft says sizes, colors, finishes, processors, and availability can vary by store, market, and configuration. A product-family name alone is not enough to confirm what a retailer is selling. Before checkout, use this checklist:
Quick Recap
- Confirm the generation and screen size in the model name.
- Check the exact processor variant, memory capacity, and SSD capacity in the specification table.
- Compare the local price for that precise configuration; the announced starting MSRPs do not establish every configuration’s price.
- Confirm color, finish, stock status, and delivery or availability for your market.
- Review serviceability or upgrade terms if future storage changes matter to you.
- For a business purchase, verify the business SKU and its specifications separately rather than assuming they match the consumer model.
