Choose streaming quality based on the sustained download speed available at the device playing the video—not just the speed advertised by your internet plan. YouTube’s current guidance is about 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD, but those are platform-specific recommendations, not guarantees. If playback buffers, check the connection near the screen, account for other network use, and try one lower quality setting.
Use the speed that reaches your playback device
A plan’s advertised speed does not tell you exactly what a TV, phone, computer, or streaming box can use at viewing time. Wi-Fi signal, distance from the router, interference, and other household activity can reduce the speed available where you watch.

Run a speed test near the playback device while the household is using the network as it normally would. Compare the result with the streaming service’s guidance for the resolution you want. Treat a brief peak result as a starting point: the relevant question is whether the connection can sustain playback, not whether it briefly reaches a particular number.
YouTube’s approximate speed guidance
YouTube’s current help guidance gives these approximate sustained download speeds by resolution. They are YouTube recommendations, not universal thresholds for every streaming service, codec, or type of video.

These figures come from YouTube’s system requirements, which describes the speeds as approximate sustained recommendations. YouTube separately says purchased UHD titles need at least 15 Mbps of consistent download speed on its purchased-movie and TV playback requirements. That figure applies to that purchased-title context; it is not a general 4K threshold and does not replace the 20 Mbps recommendation above.
Choose a quality that fits your situation
Speed is only one part of the decision. Consider the available connection at viewing time, how many devices are active, the screen and viewing distance, and whether the video and device support the resolution.

- For a small screen or a busy connection: 480p or 720p may be a more practical choice when you prefer steady playback over extra detail.
- For a larger screen: higher quality can be more noticeable. YouTube says higher quality generally plays better on larger screens, but use a setting your connection can sustain.
- For 1080p or 4K: compare the speed at the playback device with the platform’s recommendation, allowing for other household traffic rather than assuming the whole plan’s speed is available to one stream.
- For unsupported video or hardware: a faster connection cannot make an SD-only original into HD, nor can it enable a resolution the device, browser, or app does not support.
YouTube notes that available formats can vary by device and browser. Some devices may not support VP9, which can make high-quality formats such as 1080p or 4K unavailable. Check the service’s and device’s compatibility guidance if a resolution does not appear.

What to do when a stream buffers
YouTube says it changes stream quality according to viewing conditions, including connection speed, and viewers can also select quality manually. The exact controls vary by device and interface. A lower manual setting is a useful troubleshooting test: if playback stabilizes, the higher setting may be more than the connection can sustain under current conditions.

- Test near the screen. Run a speed test on or near the TV, streaming box, computer, or phone that is playing the video. A test on another device or in another room may not reflect its connection.
- Check other network use. Pause or reduce downloads, video calls, and other demanding activity. With several active devices, try a lower playback quality to leave more capacity for the stream.
- Lower quality one step. If playback still buffers or keeps changing quality, manually select the next lower resolution and see whether playback steadies.
- Check the video and device. Confirm that the title is available in the resolution you want and that the app, browser, and playback device support it.
- Improve the local connection. Move the TV or streaming device closer to the router, reduce interference, or minimize other connected-device activity. YouTube notes that a wired connection may help with TV playback problems.
If the playback device supports Ethernet and its Wi-Fi remains unreliable, testing it with a standard Ethernet cable can help determine whether the wireless link is the problem. A wired connection can improve the local path to the router; it does not add bandwidth to the internet plan.

YouTube’s figures are a useful baseline for YouTube, but they do not establish a universal speed requirement. The service, title, compression format, device support, browser, Wi-Fi conditions, and competing network use can all affect what quality is available and how steadily it plays. For another service, check that service’s own speed and device recommendations rather than applying YouTube’s numbers as a rule.
