Nintendo’s collection brings together Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. You can play them with original rules in Classic Mode or choose Anniversary Mode for widescreen presentation without lives or game-over screens.
Choose Sonic Superstars instead if your priority is a newer 2D side-scrolling game or drop-in local multiplayer. Its campaign supports up to four local players, and it is available on current PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms. A specific 3D Sonic recommendation needs a separate comparison of onboarding, controls, and story context; the available official information does not establish one best 3D starting point.

The quickest way to decide
Your first choice should follow the kind of Sonic game you want to play, not a supposed universal order. The two clearly supported starting points serve different purposes.
| What you want | Best-supported starting point | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| The classic 2D games in one package | Sonic Origins | Four early games: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. |
| Original-style rules and a stricter presentation | Sonic Origins, Classic Mode | Original rules, 4:3 framing, limited lives, and game-over screens. |
| A more forgiving first attempt at the same collection | Sonic Origins, Anniversary Mode | 16:9 framing with lives and game-over screens removed. |
| A newer 2D game | Sonic Superstars | 2D high-speed side-scrolling action presented with 3D graphics. |
| Local multiplayer | Sonic Superstars | Drop-in/drop-out local co-op for up to four players throughout its campaign. |
| A 3D Sonic game | Needs a separate comparison | The available official material does not establish one 3D game as the best first playthrough. |
This table is a decision aid, not a ranking of quality. It keeps the recommendation tied to a specific goal that you can identify before buying or installing anything.

Why Sonic Origins is the clearest classic starting point
Sonic Origins answers the most common beginner request—where to start with the early 2D games—without making you locate four separate releases. Nintendo lists these games in the collection:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Sonic 3 & Knuckles
- Sonic CD
That concentration matters for a first playthrough. You can move from one early game to the next while keeping the same collection installed, rather than making a new purchasing and platform decision for every entry. It also lets you decide how closely you want to follow the original rules before you begin.
Choose Classic Mode when authenticity is the point
Classic Mode is the choice for someone who wants the original rules and a 4:3 screen presentation. Limited lives and game-over screens remain part of the experience. That structure makes failure consequential: you must decide whether you want to continue within the traditional rules or restart after running out of attempts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse this mode when your goal is to understand how the early games originally played, including their presentation and retry structure. It is also the better fit if you specifically want to compare your experience with descriptions of the original releases without a mode that changes those elements.
Choose Anniversary Mode when uninterrupted exploration matters more
Anniversary Mode changes two important parts of the presentation. It uses a 16:9 widescreen view and removes lives and game-over screens. You still play the same four-game collection, but the consequence of repeated failures is reduced.
This is a sensible first setting if you would rather keep learning a level than stop because a life counter or game-over screen ended the attempt. It is not accurate to describe it as the only correct way to begin: the mode is a deliberate alternative to Classic Mode, and your preference determines which one fits.

A practical first session with Sonic Origins
- Confirm the platform. Nintendo has a Switch listing for Sonic Origins. Check the store for the platform you actually own before purchasing.
- Choose your rules before launching. Select Classic Mode if original rules and 4:3 framing are central to your goal; select Anniversary Mode if widescreen play without lives or game-over screens is more suitable.
- Start with one game rather than sampling everything at once. Use the collection’s listed games as your available route: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD.
- Keep the mode consistent while learning. Switching between Classic and Anniversary changes the retry structure and framing, so make a deliberate choice instead of treating a sudden change as a difficulty problem.
- Change modes only for a reason. If limited lives and game-over screens are preventing you from learning, move to Anniversary Mode. If the widescreen, no-game-over presentation does not give you the experience you wanted, return to Classic Mode.
The important decision is not a hidden “correct” order. It is whether your first session should reproduce original rules or remove those particular barriers while you learn the collection.

When Sonic Superstars is the better first game
Sonic Superstars is the alternative for a reader who wants a newer 2D side-scrolling Sonic game rather than a collection of early titles. PlayStation’s official product description calls it 2D high-speed side-scrolling action with 3D graphics. That combination gives you a modern presentation while retaining the side-scrolling format.
Do not infer from that description that it is easier, more suitable for story, or automatically better for every beginner. The supported reason to choose it is more specific: you want a newer 2D game, particularly one that can be played locally with other people.
Use Superstars for shared local play
The campaign supports drop-in/drop-out local co-op for up to four players throughout the campaign. That means additional players can join or leave locally without requiring you to restart the entire campaign whenever the group changes.
Choose this route when the first playthrough is a shared activity. Before buying, confirm that the store listing and your hardware support the version you intend to use, and plan for the number of local players who will actually join. The four-player figure is a maximum, not a requirement: a solo player or a smaller group can still choose the game for its newer 2D format.
Do not overread the 3D graphics
“2D high-speed side-scrolling action with 3D graphics” describes the game’s presentation and basic format. It does not, by itself, prove that the game teaches Sonic fundamentals better than the collection, has a stronger story introduction, or is simpler for a first-time player. Those would require evidence about onboarding, controls, or narrative context that is not established here.

Check platform ownership before choosing
A recommendation is useful only if you can play the game on the hardware you own. The officially listed availability for Sonic Superstars is:
| Game | Platforms listed by the cited official information |
|---|---|
| Sonic Superstars | PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC storefronts. |
| Sonic Origins | Nintendo has a Switch listing. Verify availability on any other platform directly in that platform’s current store. |
Use this checklist at the point of purchase:
- Identify the exact console or PC storefront you will use.
- Open that platform’s current product listing rather than relying on a search result for another edition.
- Confirm the title and edition match the game discussed here.
- If local co-op is your reason for choosing Sonic Superstars, verify that the listing and your setup support the intended number of local players.
- If you are choosing Sonic Origins for the mode options, confirm that the version you buy includes the collection and the Classic and Anniversary choices described above.
Platform availability is a purchasing constraint, not a measure of which game is “better.” A game that does not run on your system cannot be the right first playthrough for you.
How to choose between the two 2D starting points
Pick Sonic Origins if you want historical breadth
Choose the collection when your priority is seeing four early games together. You also get a meaningful rules choice: Classic Mode preserves original rules and 4:3 framing, while Anniversary Mode removes lives and game-over screens and presents the games in 16:9. This makes the collection adaptable to two different first-playthrough goals without requiring two separate products.

Choose Sonic Superstars when a new 2D side-scrolling game and local co-op are more important than sampling the four games in Sonic Origins. Its local campaign supports up to four players and allows players to drop in or out, which directly addresses a group-play use case.
Use a tie-breaker when both sound right
- Solo player, classic curiosity: begin with Sonic Origins.
- Solo player, newer 2D presentation: begin with Sonic Superstars, provided your platform is supported.
- Two to four people playing locally: begin with Sonic Superstars because its campaign explicitly supports that format.
- Unsure about difficulty caused by lives: begin with Sonic Origins in Anniversary Mode rather than assuming the entire collection is unsuitable.
- Interested specifically in original rules: begin with Sonic Origins in Classic Mode.
What about starting with a 3D Sonic game?
The available official information does not settle which 3D Sonic game is the best first playthrough. A responsible recommendation would need to compare at least three things for each candidate:
- Onboarding: how clearly the game introduces its objectives, movement, and systems.
- Controls: whether a new player can understand the control scheme and camera behavior without outside explanation.
- Story context: whether the game provides enough context to follow its premise without prior series knowledge.
Because those comparisons are not established here, do not select a particular 3D title merely because it is newer, popular, or available on your console. If 3D is non-negotiable, treat the choice as a separate research question and evaluate those three criteria from official information for the exact version you plan to play.

Common first-playthrough mistakes
Assuming every first-time player should use Classic Mode
Classic Mode is not a universal requirement. It keeps original rules, 4:3 framing, limited lives, and game-over screens. Anniversary Mode exists for a different preference, with 16:9 framing and no lives or game-over screens. Decide which experience you want instead of treating one mode as objectively correct.

Assuming Anniversary Mode is the “easy” version
The documented change is the removal of lives and game-over screens plus the widescreen presentation. That makes the retry structure more forgiving, but it does not establish a general claim about every aspect of gameplay. Describe the mode by its actual changes rather than promising a particular difficulty level.
Buying before checking the platform
Sonic Superstars has a broad listed platform range, while the cited Sonic Origins information specifically establishes a Nintendo Switch listing. Check your own store first, especially when choosing between console generations or a PC storefront.
Choosing Superstars for a feature it has not been shown to provide
The supported case for Sonic Superstars is newer 2D action and local co-op for up to four players. The available information does not establish that it is easier, more story-focused, or a better universal introduction. Keep the reason for your choice tied to the feature you actually need.
Expecting a 3D answer from a 2D comparison
Sonic Origins and Sonic Superstars address 2D starting points. They cannot by themselves answer which 3D game has the clearest onboarding, controls, or story context. If your goal is 3D, use those criteria explicitly rather than treating the 2D recommendation as a substitute.
A simple first-playthrough plan
Plan A: learn the classic foundation alone
- Check that Sonic Origins is available on your platform; the cited Nintendo listing covers Switch.
- Choose Classic Mode for original rules and 4:3 presentation, or Anniversary Mode for 16:9 presentation without lives or game-over screens.
- Begin with one of the four listed games and continue through the collection at your own pace.
- If the retry structure is the problem, change the mode deliberately rather than abandoning the collection.
Plan B: start with a newer local group game
- Confirm that your console or PC storefront is one of the platforms listed for Sonic Superstars.
- Decide how many people will play locally; the campaign supports drop-in/drop-out co-op for up to four.
- Start the campaign together and use the drop-in/drop-out feature when the group changes.
- Judge the game on the goal you selected—newer 2D action and shared play—not on unsupported assumptions about ease or story.
Plan C: investigate 3D separately
- List the 3D candidates available on your platform.
- For each one, look for official information about onboarding, controls, and story context.
- Choose the title whose documented introduction matches your experience level and reason for playing.
- If those details are not established, label the choice uncertain rather than presenting a definitive “best” recommendation.
For most readers asking where to begin with Sonic’s classic 2D games, Sonic Origins is the clearest answer because it gathers four early games and lets you choose between original-style rules and a more forgiving presentation. For a newer 2D game built around local group play, Sonic Superstars is the focused alternative.
