The right replacement depends on your vehicle’s make, model, year, trim, market and rear-lamp assembly—and some vehicles have integrated LED reverse lamps rather than a replaceable bulb. Check the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle before buying.
Reverse lights and marker lights do different jobs
A reverse, or backup, lamp signals that the vehicle is in reverse and illuminates the area behind it. NHTSA describes both functions as safety-related in its February 2022 Federal Register notice.

A side marker lamp is a separate lighting function. The bulb examples below concern reversing lamps; they should not be used to choose a side-marker bulb.
Which reverse light bulb fits my car?
Use the bulb chart or lighting instructions in the owner’s manual for the vehicle’s exact year, trim and market. A similar-looking bulb number is not proof of compatibility: the specified base, electrical characteristics and lamp design must match.

For example, Ford’s online owner’s-manual chart lists W21W 21-watt and 3157 27/7-watt reversing bulbs for different configurations. These are fitment examples, not universal recommendations or a comparison of brightness. Ford cautions that its online manual may differ by configuration and that the manual supplied with the individual vehicle is the primary reference. Check whether the reverse lamp has a replaceable bulb
Some vehicles allow replacement of a bulb; others use an integrated LED lamp that is serviced as a unit. Mazda’s 2020 Mazda3 owner’s manual identifies the reverse lights among the integrated LED exterior lamps and says the LED is replaced with the unit. That is a serviceability example for that model, not a rule for all Mazda vehicles. Consult the manual for your exact car before ordering either a bulb or an assembly: 2020 Mazda3 owner’s manual.

What makes a replacement appropriate?
- Verified fitment: Match the owner’s manual and the lamp’s specified bulb or assembly. Do not infer compatibility from a bulb that looks similar or from another trim’s chart.
- Correct service part: Confirm whether the vehicle takes a removable source or an integrated lamp assembly.
- Specified characteristics: Use the replacement type documented for the vehicle rather than choosing solely by an advertised brightness figure.
- Intended function and compliance: Backup lamps have regulated characteristics. Avoid colored or modified replacements unless they are appropriate for the vehicle and the rules where it is driven.
SAE’s J573 standard covers physical, electrical and photometric characteristics for replacement light sources. SAE also distinguishes those source specifications from the performance of complete lamp assemblies on a vehicle. A bulb’s advertised brightness—or its conformity to a source specification—does not by itself establish how the assembled lamp performs on your car.
NHTSA’s FMVSS 108 test procedure addresses backup-lamp characteristics including color, location, activation, visibility and photometry. A marketing claim about brightness is not evidence that an aftermarket replacement has been verified for your complete vehicle lamp or that it meets the requirements applicable in your jurisdiction.

Before you buy
- Identify the vehicle’s exact year, make, model, trim and market.
- Open the owner’s manual’s exterior-lighting or bulb chart and find the reverse-lamp specification.
- Check whether the manual specifies a replaceable bulb or an integrated lamp assembly.
- Compare the replacement with the documented type and fitment; do not substitute a bulb number based only on appearance or a listing’s generic compatibility claim.
- If the manual or chart is unclear, confirm the part with the vehicle maker or a qualified parts specialist using the vehicle’s exact details.
