Choose a capacity that balances how much you want to carry with how often you can refill, then check that the bottle fits your bag, desk, and usual cup holder. Bottle size is a convenience choice—not a personal hydration target.
Start with your routine, not a daily ounce target
Think through a typical day: your commute, time at a desk, exercise, travel, and access to refill points. If refills are easy and you want to keep carry weight and bulk down, a smaller bottle may be more convenient. If you cannot refill often and are comfortable carrying more, a larger capacity may suit you better.

As a product-search starting point, you might compare bottles around 20–24 oz if you are unsure. That is only a shopping heuristic: CDC’s NHANES measuring guide lists 20- and 24-ounce bottles among examples used to estimate reported water consumption; it does not recommend either as an ideal everyday size. The guide also lists 8-, 12-, and 16.9-ounce examples (NCHS/CDC NHANES water-bottle measuring guide).

- Refill frequency: Consider how long you typically go between places where you can refill. A larger bottle means more water between refills; a smaller one means less to carry per fill.
- Filled size and weight: Check the product’s dimensions and weight, and consider how comfortable it will be in your bag or in your hand when full.
- Fit: Confirm that the bottle fits the cup holders, backpack pockets, and desk storage you expect to use. Capacity alone does not tell you whether it will fit.
- Drinking and care: Check the specific bottle’s opening and lid design, leak guidance, and cleaning instructions. There is no universal winner on these features established by the sources cited here.
What bottle size says—and does not say—about hydration
A bottle’s capacity describes how much its container holds; it does not tell you how much water you personally need in a day. The CDC says, “Daily water intake recommendations vary by age, sex, pregnancy status, activity level, and breastfeeding status.” Water in food and other beverages also contributes to daily intake. See the CDC’s About Water and Healthier Drinks guidance.

CDC reports that US adults averaged 44 ounces of plain water per day, while children and adolescents averaged 23 ounces, during 2015–2018. These are population averages for that period, not recommended intakes or individual targets (CDC Fast Facts: Data on Water Consumption, January 19, 2024).
CDC recommends carrying a reusable water bottle as one tip for drinking more water. It also notes that people may need more water in hot climates or with increased physical activity, fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. Those circumstances do not make one bottle capacity right for everyone; consider your own needs and circumstances.
