Choose tools for the exact phone model and repair—not for Android in general. Start with the device’s repair manual, confirm every required driver bit and opening tool, then buy a kit that covers those needs. For basic phone work, a precision driver kit, plastic opening tools, an ESD-safe spudger and tweezers are a practical starting point; add suction, ESD gear or heating tools only when the procedure calls for them.
Start with the repair guide, not the kit’s bit count
There is no universal Android screwdriver set. Required bits and opening methods vary by phone and by repair. For example, the Pixel 6 repair manual lists Torx Plus 3IP as an optional bit, while Samsung’s general disassembly and reassembly guidance names a cross-head screwdriver. Those examples do not establish compatibility for other models.

- Find the official or otherwise reliable repair guide for your exact phone model and the component you plan to replace.
- Write down the required driver types and any specified opening, suction or heating tools.
- Compare that list with a kit’s current contents. A larger bit assortment is not useful if it still lacks the one bit your procedure requires.
- Check whether the guide calls for additional safety equipment, and whether the kit includes it or you must source it separately.
iFixit likewise advises checking the device guide to confirm the tools for a repair. Its toolkit recommendations distinguish lighter, medium and heavier use rather than claiming one kit suits every job.

Which tools do you need for basic phone repairs?
A basic toolkit is a starting point, not a promise that it covers every Android phone. Match the contents to the documented procedure.

Verify a product’s current contents and availability before buying; a toolkit’s name alone does not establish that it contains everything your repair requires.
How to compare kits for your kind of work
- Exact driver coverage: Confirm every required bit against the model-and-repair guide. Do not infer compatibility from the phone brand or from the kit’s total number of pieces.
- Opening tools: Look for the plastic picks, opening tool, spudger or suction equipment the procedure actually specifies.
- ESD protection: Check whether the kit supplies an anti-static wrist strap. Samsung recommends a strap connected to a grounded ESD-safe mat, so a strap alone may not cover the setup described in its guidance.
- Repair frequency and scope: For an occasional repair, a smaller kit may be enough if it contains the exact tools needed. Frequent work across multiple devices can justify a broader assortment, but each repair still needs a compatibility check.
- Portability and organization: Consider where you will work and how small screws and bits will be kept under control. Kit formats and organization differ.

Use opening tools carefully around delicate parts
Use plastic opening tools or an ESD-safe spudger near boards and connectors. iFixit’s Essential Electronics Toolkit guidance identifies the ESD-safe spudger for this work and cautions against using a flathead screwdriver for prying. Picks can help with tight edges, but the correct force and insertion depth depend on the device procedure; pushing too far or forcing a tool can damage internal components.
Samsung’s disassembly guidance emphasizes using proper tools and handling internal components carefully. Its usage notices include ESD advice and direction to seek a Samsung Service Centre if the battery is damaged. Follow the phone’s model-specific guidance rather than treating one tool or technique as safe for every device.

Check the safety instructions before opening the phone
- Review the complete repair procedure before starting, including its battery, adhesive and opening instructions.
- Use the ESD precautions specified for the work. Samsung recommends an anti-static wrist strap connected to a grounded ESD-safe mat.
- Take care with broken glass and keep loose screws from being left inside the phone, as Samsung warns.
- Stop if the battery is damaged; Samsung directs users to a Samsung Service Centre in that situation.
Battery-charge instructions are procedure-specific. For instance, iFixit’s Pixel 6 Pro earpiece speaker guide instructs readers to discharge the battery below 25% before disassembly. Treat that as an instruction for the cited procedure, not a universal threshold for Android phones.
