How to Choose the Right Phone Storage Capacity for Your Needs

Choose phone storage by checking what you use now, what you expect to add, how long you will keep the device, and whether you rely on cloud storage or offline files.

Choose phone storage by estimating what you keep on the device now, what you will add, and how long you plan to keep the phone. Apps, games, photos and especially videos, offline downloads, and work or school files all use built-in space. Cloud photo storage can reduce local photo copies, but it is separate from your phone’s capacity and depends on an internet connection and available cloud space.

Start with the storage you use now

  1. Open your phone’s storage settings and note the total space used and the largest categories. The exact menu label varies by phone, so search Settings for “storage” if needed.

  2. Separate items you need to keep locally from items you could delete, stream again, or move elsewhere. Large games, downloaded films and music, and work or school files may need to stay on the phone; cached or replaceable downloads may not.

  3. Look at what is likely to grow. Camera use—particularly video—offline media for travel, new apps and games, and locally stored files can add up over the years you own the device.

    #1 Best Overall
    SANDISK 128GB Ultra microSD UHS-I Card - Up to 195MB/s Read Speed, Full HD Video, V10, U1, C10, A5 - SDSQUJQ-128G-GZ6MA
    • EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
    • SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
    • MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
    • LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
    • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].

Use your current breakdown as a starting point, not a forecast by itself. Someone who records a lot of video or travels with downloads has different needs from someone who streams and regularly clears old files. There is no established universal capacity that suits every user.

Decide how much you want to rely on cloud storage

Built-in phone capacity and cloud storage are separate resources: a larger account allowance does not increase the phone’s internal space. Apple states that an iCloud account includes 5GB of storage; Google says each Google Account includes up to 15GB. These are account allowances, not phone-capacity recommendations, and they may be shared with other account data.

Rank #2
SanDisk 128GB Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card - Up to 140 MB/s, C10, U1, Full HD, A1, Micro SD Card - SDSQUAB-128G-GN6MN
  • Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops.
  • Up to 140MB/s transfer speeds to move up to 1000 photos per minute
  • Load apps faster with A1-rated performance
  • View, access, and back up your phone’s files in one location with the SanDisk Memory Zone app
  • Relax knowing your card is backed by a 10-year limited warranty by SanDisk

For an iPhone photo library

With iCloud Photos, Apple’s Optimize Storage option can keep smaller versions on the phone while full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud. This can reduce the space photos use locally, but it depends on having the cloud setup and enough available iCloud space. See Apple’s guidance on managing photo and video storage.

For Google Photos

Google Photos backup quality affects how uploaded photos and videos are stored, and some files may remain at original size. Google account storage can be managed by clearing space or buying more, but cloud backup does not make offline films, music, apps, games, or files disappear from local storage. See Google Photos’ explanation of backup quality.

Compare the capacities offered on the exact phone

Once you have a realistic view of your habits, compare the capacity options and their price differences for the specific model you are considering. A higher tier may make sense if you keep extensive media offline, install large games, record lots of video, or want fewer storage-management chores. A lower tier may suit lighter use if you routinely stream, remove replaceable downloads, or use cloud photo storage.

Factor in the intended lifespan of the phone: the longer you expect to keep it, the more time there is for apps, media, and files to accumulate. Check whether that exact model supports expandable storage before treating a card as a future solution; availability is model-specific, not something to assume across brands.

Capacity labels also vary by model and generation. Macworld’s 2026 iPhone buying guide reports that Apple’s current-generation iPhones start at 256GB. That is a dated report about Apple’s lineup, not a universal recommendation or a claim about Android phones or future models. Confirm the options for the exact phone and market you intend to buy: Macworld’s 2026 iPhone buying guide.
