Choose a phone by setting your maximum spend first, then ranking what matters most: camera, battery life, performance, screen size, or long-term software support. Compare models against those priorities—not their price or marketing tier alone—and check warranty, repair options, and network compatibility before buying.
1. Set a firm budget before comparing phones
Decide the most you can spend, including any required accessories, taxes, or plan costs. A US buying guide groups phones below $500 as “affordable” and those at $300 or less as “cheap”; those are that guide’s categories, not universal price definitions. Prices and availability vary by retailer and region.

Within your limit, compare the actual storage configuration and total purchase price. A low starting price may not apply to the storage version you need, and a premium model is not automatically the better value if its standout features do not match your priorities.

Pick your top two or three priorities before looking at model lists. The right compromise depends on how you use a phone day to day.

- Photos: Consider the kinds of pictures you take and whether you need zoom or a telephoto camera, rather than relying on a general “good camera” label.
- Battery: Look for evidence relevant to your routine and check charging details; do not assume a larger or more expensive phone will suit your use better.
- Gaming and demanding apps: Prioritize performance for the apps and games you actually run. A phone can feel responsive in everyday use without leading in gaming benchmarks.
- Screen size and comfort: Consider how the display feels in your hand and whether you can comfortably use the phone you plan to carry.
- Storage and connectivity: Check the exact memory/storage configuration and whether the phone’s 5G and carrier/network support match your location and provider.
- Keeping the phone longer: Put update duration, repair access, warranty, and physical condition higher on the list.
Samsung’s UK guide organizes its recommendations around areas such as camera, gaming, battery, screen size, memory/storage, and 5G. Its descriptions of Samsung’s Galaxy A range as focused on essential features and value, S range as advanced performance and camera, and Z range as foldables are the manufacturer’s own positioning—not independent comparative test results. Samsung’s UK phone buying guide is useful for understanding that lineup, but compare specific models on the features you need.
3. Compare shortlisted phones on the same criteria
Once you have a shortlist, use the same checklist for each phone. Manufacturer specifications, independent reviews, and seller listings answer different questions, so confirm important details against the appropriate source.

4. Check software support for the exact model
Update promises differ by manufacturer and model, so do not infer support from a brand name or price tier. Find the stated operating-system and security-update policy for the exact phone you are considering, and check whether it applies in your region.

5. Decide whether new, refurbished, or used makes sense
A lower-priced used or refurbished phone can expand your options, but the condition and protections matter as much as the model name. Before paying, verify:
- Battery condition and whether it has been replaced.
- Physical condition, including screen and ports, and any known repair history.
- Whether the seller offers a return window and what warranty, if any, applies.
- Seller reputation and the protections available to you if the phone is misrepresented or fails.
- Carrier/network compatibility and whether the device is available for use with your service.
Policies and terminology vary by seller and region. Do not assume that “refurbished” guarantees a particular battery condition, warranty, or return right; check the written terms before buying.

6. Match the phone to how long you expect to keep it
If you plan to keep a phone for years, a longer support policy, repair access, and a sound battery become more important than a small short-term specification advantage. The Associated Press reported in September 2026 that Counterpoint Research put the typical smartphone replacement cycle at four years. That is a population-level estimate, not a guarantee that any particular handset will last that long or remain suitable for your needs.

7. Make the final choice with a simple decision rule
- Set your maximum spend. Keep the shortlist within the amount you are prepared to pay.
- Choose your must-haves. Name the few features that would genuinely change your daily experience.
- Remove mismatches. Exclude phones that lack a required feature, adequate support, or local compatibility.
- Compare the remaining tradeoffs. Decide whether you would rather give up, for example, zoom capability or top gaming performance in exchange for another priority.
- Confirm the purchase terms. Check the exact model, storage, price, seller, warranty, and return policy before checkout.
There is no single budget or model that works for everyone. A good choice is the phone that fits your spending limit, handles your most important tasks, and has ownership support you can live with.
