Higher resolution can preserve more image detail, but it can also create larger files, and the result depends on the phone and camera mode.
What phone camera resolution should I use for everyday photos?
For routine snapshots, social sharing, and viewing on a phone or computer screen, the default setting is a sensible choice. Move to a higher resolution for a specific reason: keeping detail you may crop into, examining fine textures, or preparing a larger print.

Megapixels count pixels in an image; they do not describe every factor that affects how a photo looks. A higher-resolution file can retain more detail for cropping, but the number alone does not guarantee a better-looking picture. Camera hardware, the selected lens or zoom, capture mode, and image processing all matter, and available options differ by phone.

When is a higher resolution useful?
- You plan to crop: Extra captured pixels can leave more detail in the cropped image. Apple describes this benefit for 48 MP ProRAW on supported iPhones, but it is not a universal guarantee for every phone or mode.
- You need to inspect fine detail: A higher-resolution capture can preserve more image information to zoom into later.
- You want a larger print: More pixels may be useful for a larger output, though the appropriate resolution depends on the image and how it will be printed and viewed. No single print-size rule applies to every photo.
If none of those needs apply, keeping the standard setting avoids making larger files without a clear benefit for your use.

Do I need 48 MP or 12 MP?
There is no one setting that fits every phone. On iPhone 14 Pro and later Pro models, Apple’s support guidance describes 12 MP and 48 MP ProRAW capture. Apple says 48 MP images retain more detail for zooming and cropping, while 12 MP ProRAW files are smaller.
That 48 MP ProRAW option has limits: in Apple’s described capture path, it applies to the main camera at 1×. Ultra Wide, Telephoto, Night mode, flash, and macro photos can only be saved at 12 MP in ProRAW. On compatible models, HEIF Max or RAW Max can reach up to 48 MP, but resolution can change with zoom, Night mode, or flash. These details apply to the supported models and software Apple describes, not every iPhone. Apple’s ProRAW and resolution guidance lists the supported options and restrictions.

Samsung’s Australian Galaxy guide describes selecting Camera Ratio and then 3:4 (64MP High Resolution) on supported devices. Samsung cautions that camera settings and modes vary with camera specifications and software version; the guide covers Australian variant devices. Do not assume your Galaxy has a 64 MP option or the same menu. Check your model’s camera settings and support documentation. Samsung Australia’s camera-resolution guide gives its device-specific example.
Does higher resolution use more storage?
Often, yes, but file size depends on the phone, resolution, format, and capture mode. Apple’s approximate sizes for ProRAW images are 25 MB at 12 MP and 75 MB at 48 MP. These are Apple’s RAW examples for supported iPhones, not a general estimate for ordinary phone photos. Apple Support provides those figures.

Samsung US gives an average estimate of 5 MB per photo, while noting that sizes differ between smartphones and depend on camera specifications. Treat that as a broad estimate, not a prediction for a particular phone, resolution, or file format. Samsung’s storage guidance also discusses external storage options, but compatibility and transfer methods depend on the device.
If larger captures are filling your phone, use the standard mode for routine pictures and reserve high resolution for shots where the extra detail matters. A portable SSD or other external storage may help store or transfer files, but check that your phone’s connector and file-transfer support work with the accessory before buying.

How do I change my phone camera resolution?
The exact menu depends on the phone, software version, and camera mode. Look in the camera app for a resolution, image-size, or ratio control, then confirm the active setting before taking important photos.

On supported iPhones
Apple’s resolution controls and available formats vary by model and capture mode. Consult Apple’s current ProRAW and resolution instructions for the supported model-specific steps and limitations rather than assuming a single path applies to every iPhone.

On supported Samsung Galaxy phones
Samsung Australia’s example is Camera > Camera Ratio > 3:4 (64MP High Resolution) on supported devices. The option may not appear on other Galaxy models or software versions. Use Samsung’s guide for the Australian variant instructions and verify the choices shown on your own device.
Does cloud backup keep the photo at its captured resolution?
Capture resolution and cloud backup quality are separate settings. In Google Photos, Original quality stores photos and videos at the resolution captured, unchanged, and counts them toward Google Account storage. Storage saver compresses photos and resizes images above 16 MP to 16 MP; it also counts toward account storage. Google notes exceptions in which some files may not be compressed.
Google’s region-dependent Express option resizes photos above 3 MP to 3 MP. Its guidance says Storage saver’s 16 MP photos can provide good-quality prints up to 24 × 16 inches; that is Google’s guidance, not a guarantee for every printer, viewing distance, or image. Check the backup quality setting if preserving the captured file matters. Google Photos explains its backup quality options and exceptions.

A quick decision rule
- Leave the camera at its standard resolution for everyday photos.
- Switch higher for a planned crop, close inspection of detail, or larger print.
- Check how the chosen mode affects file size and which camera features it disables or limits.
- Review cloud backup quality separately if you need the backed-up copy to retain the captured resolution.
