Choose merch sizes by publishing accurate, product-specific measurements and explaining exactly what they measure. Use a body chart to help shoppers select a size from their own measurements; use a garment chart to help them compare the item with clothing they already own. Don’t rely on letter labels such as S, M, and L alone: their dimensions can vary by product, cut, and fabric.
Start with the right kind of size chart
Body measurements
A body chart lists the wearer’s dimensions associated with each size. It is the right guide for a shopper who can measure their body. Label the chart clearly as “body measurements,” and provide instructions for taking those measurements.

Finished-garment measurements
A garment chart gives the dimensions of the sewn item. Those numbers include the garment’s shape and the room built into its design. Label it “garment measurements.” A shopper can compare these measurements with a similar item they own, but should not compare finished-garment dimensions directly with their body measurements.

Offering both can answer different customer questions: the body chart helps with size selection, while the garment chart helps shoppers judge how a specific item may fit compared with a familiar piece of clothing. Use corresponding measurement points where possible, and explain how to use each chart separately.

Build a chart for each product and style
- Get product-specific measurements. If you resell apparel, request the supplier’s chart for the specific product. If you make the merch, record the relevant body and finished-garment dimensions for each style and size. Don’t assume one shirt’s measurements apply to another cut.
- Choose the measurements that matter. Include enough detail for the item’s shape and fit. Tops commonly need chest or bust, shoulder, length, and sleeve; dresses may need bust, waist, hip, length, and sometimes shoulder; pants may need waist, hip, rise, thigh, inseam, and leg opening.
- Match each chart to its measurement method. Say whether a number describes the wearer or the finished product. If customers will compare a garment they own, give them the same measurement points and method used in your chart.
- Add fit context beside the numbers. Describe the intended silhouette, such as fitted, regular, or easy, and include product-specific guidance that your supplier or construction details support.
- Check units and placement. Use consistent units, choosing the default that suits your primary market. If useful to your customers, provide both units or a unit toggle. Make the chart easy to find on the product page while the shopper is deciding.
Choose measurement points by product type

These are useful starting points, not a universal checklist. Follow the supplier’s product-specific information when you are a retailer, and add or omit points according to the design.
Explain how shoppers should measure
For a body chart
Tell customers to take body measurements and use the body chart—not the finished-garment chart—to select a size. A flexible measuring tape can make this easier, but it is optional. Include concise instructions or a diagram that shows where each measurement is taken.

For a garment chart
Ask customers to lay a similar, well-fitting garment flat and measure the matching points. For a shirt, a common comparison is the width across the chest; the exact method must match the chart. Biz Collection describes a half-chest method in its guide, while Angel’s guidance recommends measuring a well-fitting shirt or sweatshirt from side to side below the sleeve join. Don’t mix a width measured flat with a circumference measurement, or compare measurements taken at different points.

Help customers choose between sizes
There is no dependable universal rule to always size up or down. A “Medium” label does not promise the same dimensions across brands—or even across products from one brand. Design, fit, and fabric can change how a size measures and feels.

Give between-size advice only when it is supported by the particular item’s measurements, construction, or supplier guidance. State the intended fit plainly, and point the shopper to the chart that matches the information they have: body measurements for a body chart, or a similar garment for a garment chart.
Account for measurement variation honestly
Production measurements may vary, but a tolerance disclosed for one brand or product is not a general apparel standard. For example, Angel states that its products may vary by up to 1/2 inch in either direction. UNIQLO’s guide gives an approximately 1–2 cm variation for product measurements and a different range for belts. Use your own supplier’s or production team’s information; don’t copy another seller’s tolerance and present it as yours.

Make the chart easy to maintain and use
- Assign the correct chart to each relevant product rather than applying one chart across different silhouettes without checking the measurements.
- Keep units and labels consistent, and make the chart accessible from the product page.
- When comparing chart tools, check the features you need—such as product-specific chart assignment, unit conversion, mobile display, and language support—as well as current pricing and platform compatibility.
- A size-chart app can help implement charts on a platform such as Shopify, but it cannot verify that your measurements are accurate. The Shopify App Store listing for Smart Size Chart & Size Guide describes capabilities including templates, unit conversion, customization, mobile presentation, and multiple-language support; check the current listing for availability and terms.
