The right ear-tip size is the one that seals your ear canal comfortably and stays in place—not automatically the medium tip that came preinstalled. Try the included sizes separately for each ear, seat the earbuds as their maker directs, and use a model-specific fit test if one is available.
How do I know if my ear tips fit?
A suitable tip feels secure and comfortable without needing constant adjustment. Check that it remains in place during ordinary movement and that the seal and sound seem consistent. A tip that is too small or poorly seated may leak sound or loosen; one that is too large may feel uncomfortable. Manufacturers link a good fit with sound quality and noise isolation, but the specific effects depend on the earbud model.

Position matters as well as size: an earbud that is not seated as intended can seem like the wrong size. Follow the insertion instructions for your exact model and adjust its position before switching tips. Apple and Samsung both advise checking placement as part of getting a proper fit: Apple’s AirPods Pro fit guidance and Samsung’s Galaxy Buds fit guidance.

Yes. Your ears may need different sizes, so assess the left and right sides independently rather than choosing a matching pair by default. Apple explicitly notes that AirPods Pro users may need different sizes for each ear. Choose the comfortable, secure fit for each side.

How do I test the earbud seal?
- Identify the exact model and generation. Check which tip sizes came with it and use the maker’s instructions for that specific product.
- Insert and seat the earbuds correctly. Adjust their position before changing tip size; poor seating can mimic a sizing problem.
- Try other included sizes on each side. Compare comfort, how well each earbud stays in during ordinary movement, and whether the seal and sound improve.
- Run the model’s fit or seal check, if available. Repeat it after repositioning or changing a tip. Treat the result as a supporting check alongside comfort, not as a substitute for it.
- Stop if fitting causes pain or irritation. Samsung and Sony advise discontinuing use if pain or irritation occurs; follow the maker’s safety guidance.
The available checks differ by model and software. Apple documents an Ear Tip Fit Test for AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation) and an Acoustic Seal Test for AirPods Pro 3 with iOS or iPadOS 26 or later. Samsung describes an Earbud fit test in Galaxy Wearable for Galaxy Buds2 and Buds2 Pro. Sony describes a seal and wear assessment in Sound Connect for WF-1000XM6. Do not assume a test or its instructions apply to another generation or brand. See the makers’ instructions for Apple, Samsung, and Sony WF-1000XM6.
What can the fit affect?
A good seal can support better noise cancellation and richer bass on AirPods Pro, according to Apple. Bose says fit and seal affect sound clarity and external-noise reduction; Samsung connects proper wear with sound quality, comfort, and keeping the earbuds in place. Sony warns that unsuitable or improperly worn tips can affect sound quality, volume, noise cancelling, call performance, touch controls, and Speak-to-Chat detection. These are model-specific effects, not guaranteed improvements for every earbud.

AirPods Pro 3 have one additional, model-specific consideration: the best tip size for heart-rate sensor accuracy may differ from the size that gives the best acoustic seal, because the sensor needs skin contact. Do not apply that sensor guidance to other earbuds.
What if none of the included sizes work?
Check the support instructions for your exact model and generation, then see whether its maker offers replacement sizes. Apple says AirPods Pro tips are designed for their specific model and replacement sets are available. Sony identifies the WF-1000XM6’s own tip sizes, describes tips as consumables, and warns that damaged tips can impair performance.

Before buying replacement ear tips for your exact earbud model, confirm compatibility with both the model and generation. Consider the available size range, comfort, and whether the maker’s fit test remains supported. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish universal compatibility or comparative performance for third-party tips.
Apple’s support page, “Choose your AirPods Pro ear tips,” published January 9, 2026, puts the goal simply: “Your ear tips should make a good seal with your ear canal.”
