How to Choose the Right AWS Video Solution for Your Use Case

Match the AWS video service to the workflow: prerecorded VOD, live broadcast, interactive app video, or device-stream ingestion.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the AWS service that matches where your video comes from and what viewers or applications need to do with it. For prerecorded files, use AWS Elemental MediaConvert, storage such as Amazon S3, and CloudFront for delivery. For a live broadcast or continuous channel, use AWS Elemental MediaLive, then select MediaPackage or MediaStore for preparation and origin needs before CloudFront delivery. For interactive, low-latency video in an app or website, consider Amazon IVS; for video arriving from cameras or other devices for monitoring and processing, consider Kinesis Video Streams.

Start with the video workflow, not the service name

AWS video services fill different roles. MediaConvert encodes file-based assets; MediaLive encodes a live feed. CloudFront distributes already-prepared video, while MediaPackage and MediaStore can sit between a live encoder and delivery. IVS and Kinesis Video Streams address different application needs rather than serving as interchangeable versions of the same broadcast pipeline.

Use this quick decision guide:

Your requirement AWS pattern What to decide
Viewers choose when to watch prerecorded videos MediaConvert + storage, commonly S3 + CloudFront Output formats, packaging, storage and retention, and playback distribution
Broadcast a live event or continuous channel MediaLive + MediaPackage or MediaStore + CloudFront Whether you need multiple output formats, DRM, or playback features, and whether the encoder output already suits target devices
Put low-latency live video and interaction into an app or website Amazon IVS Application integration and the interactive experience required
Ingest video from cameras or other devices for viewing, processing, or analytics Kinesis Video Streams Device ingestion, real-time processing, retention, and later access

These are starting patterns, not a claim that every production architecture uses precisely the same components. AWS’s CloudFront guidance describes both VOD and live delivery using an HTTP origin, with media segmented and described by manifests for formats such as MPEG DASH, Apple HLS, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. CloudFront’s video-on-demand and live-streaming guide explains the delivery patterns.

For prerecorded video: MediaConvert, storage, and CloudFront

What each part does

  1. Encode and package the source file with MediaConvert. This is the file-based encoding step; it is not the service for encoding a live camera or broadcast feed.
  2. Store the resulting assets. AWS’s examples commonly use Amazon S3, though the CloudFront guidance also describes storing content on a server.
  3. Distribute prepared video with CloudFront. CloudFront is the delivery layer, not a replacement for encoding or packaging. The outputs need the segments and manifests used by the streaming formats and playback devices in your workflow.

This separation helps when planning a library: encoding and packaging happen before a viewer requests playback, while storage and delivery handle the resulting assets. Confirm the output formats, packaging, storage and retention approach, and playback distribution requirements for your own audience and devices; the appropriate outputs depend on the workflow.

When you want an event-driven VOD workflow

The Video on Demand on AWS Foundation guidance describes an event-driven pattern: an S3 upload triggers Lambda to submit a MediaConvert job, CloudWatch tracks job status, the output is saved to a destination S3 bucket, and CloudFront serves it. That adds orchestration around the same basic file-encoding and delivery path; it does not change MediaConvert into a live encoder.

For a live broadcast or continuous channel: MediaLive plus a preparation/origin choice

Begin with the live feed

MediaLive encodes a live feed into multiple encodings. From there, choose the next layer based on what viewers and playback devices require, then deliver through CloudFront. The live-video path is therefore different from VOD: it begins with a real-time feed rather than a stored file that can be encoded in advance.

Choose MediaPackage when you need preparation features

Use MediaPackage when the workflow needs content prepared into multiple formats, DRM, or playback features. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS solution overview describes MediaLive and MediaPackage producing adaptive-bitrate HLS, DASH, and CMAF streams for CloudFront, and discusses redundant inputs and content protection capabilities. Those capabilities are reasons to consider that pattern, not proof that every live workflow needs all of them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider MediaStore when the encoded formats already fit

MediaStore is an alternative when the encoded formats already suit the target devices. The choice is not simply “newer” versus “older”: compare whether you need MediaPackage’s multi-format preparation, DRM, or playback features, or whether your encoder already produces formats that work for your delivery targets. AWS describes both paths in its CloudFront streaming guidance.

Do not assume a hardware encoder is mandatory

A physical or on-premises encoder can be relevant as a live input, but AWS’s service descriptions do not establish that every implementation needs an external hardware encoder or identify a specific model as required. Choose input equipment only after defining the signal source and workflow; verify any proposed encoder’s compatibility independently.

When IVS fits better than a broadcast delivery pipeline

Amazon IVS is positioned for low-latency live video in apps and websites, especially where interactive viewer experiences matter. Consider it when the product experience is an integrated live feature rather than simply delivering a broadcast stream through an encoder, packaging/origin layer, and CDN. AWS’s Media Services overview describes that positioning. The cited service description does not establish a numeric latency guarantee or a quantified latency comparison with MediaLive-based workflows, so do not choose based on an assumed number.

When to use Kinesis Video Streams for device video

Kinesis Video Streams is for getting video from devices into AWS so applications can view it as it arrives, process it in real time, analyze it in batches, or access retained media later. AWS documents webcams and network cameras using RTSP among the possible sources. See What is Amazon Kinesis Video Streams?

This is a device-ingestion and application-processing use case, not a synonym for a managed broadcast encoder. If the goal is to take a camera feed and make a broadcast-style stream for an audience, evaluate the MediaLive live path; if the goal is to ingest device video for monitoring, processing, or later analytics, evaluate Kinesis Video Streams.

How to make the choice before building

  1. Identify the source. Is it a stored file, a live production feed, or video sent by devices? This determines whether the starting point is MediaConvert, MediaLive, or Kinesis Video Streams.
  2. Define the viewing experience. On-demand playback, broadcast delivery, interactive low-latency app video, and device monitoring are different jobs. For app/site interactivity, examine IVS; for broadcast delivery, examine MediaLive and its downstream preparation/origin choice.
  3. List playback and protection requirements. For live delivery, decide whether multiple formats, DRM, or playback features make MediaPackage useful, or whether the encoder’s existing formats already match target devices and MediaStore is an option.
  4. Plan packaging, storage, and delivery as distinct layers. For VOD, identify the encoded outputs, storage location, and CloudFront distribution. For live video, identify the encoder, any preparation/origin layer, and CloudFront delivery if that is the selected pattern.
  5. Choose orchestration only when it solves a real operational need. The VOD on AWS Foundation pattern provides upload-triggered job submission and status tracking; it is an option for automating the file workflow, not a prerequisite for every MediaConvert job.
  6. Validate the architecture against the actual input and playback targets. Check source protocols, output formats, protection needs, retention, application integration, and device compatibility before committing to a design.

Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Treating CloudFront as the encoder: CloudFront distributes content; use an encoding and packaging workflow first so the media segments and manifests are available.
  • Using MediaConvert for an incoming live feed: MediaConvert is for file-based assets. Use MediaLive for a live broadcast feed.
  • Adding MediaPackage automatically: It is useful for multiple formats, DRM, and playback features, but MediaStore is an alternative when encoded formats already suit target devices.
  • Choosing IVS solely on an assumed latency figure: The cited AWS material positions it for low-latency interactive app/site video but gives no numeric comparison here. Validate the product requirements rather than relying on an unsupported guarantee.
  • Confusing device ingestion with broadcast delivery: Kinesis Video Streams supports device-originated video for viewing, processing, analytics, and later access; MediaLive serves the live encoding role in a broadcast pattern.
  • Assuming AWS requires a particular physical encoder: On-premises encoders can be inputs, but the cited AWS descriptions do not mandate a model or hardware encoder for all implementations.
  • Budgeting from a service name alone: The architecture depends on encoding, packaging, storage, delivery, retention, and application needs. The AWS materials cited here do not establish a comparable end-to-end price for these patterns; estimate the components for your planned workload rather than assuming one service’s price represents the whole stream.
