Choose AWS Elemental MediaLive when you need to encode a live feed for a broadcast or OTT workflow. Add AWS Elemental MediaPackage when you need packaging and origination features such as multiple playback formats, DRM integration, time-shifted viewing, or live-to-VOD; use Amazon CloudFront as the delivery layer in AWS’s documented MediaPackage architecture. These are different building blocks, not interchangeable versions of one service.
Amazon IVS or MediaLive: which should you start with?
| Decision | Amazon IVS | MediaLive with MediaPackage and CloudFront |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Managed live-video service for interactive experiences, with low-latency channel delivery and real-time stages. | Broadcast and OTT workflow: encode with MediaLive, then add packaging/origination and distribution services as needed. |
| Good fit | Interactive applications, shopping, virtual events, or gaming streams where low latency and application integrations matter. | Live events, broadcast contribution, or linear channels that need encoding controls and downstream delivery features. |
| Latency | AWS documents channel delivery under 5 seconds and IVS stage latency under 300 milliseconds. These are service-level capabilities, not guaranteed end-to-end results for every viewer, device, and network. AWS IVS low-latency guide. | Depends on the selected configuration and workflow. Do not assume IVS-like figures without design-specific evidence. |
| Encoding and packaging | Managed channel path; confirm that its channel type and outputs match the application. | MediaLive encodes. MediaPackage can package HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints and support DRM, time-shifted viewing, and live-to-VOD. AWS Live Streaming solution overview. |
| Reliability design | Managed service with channel-type choices; validate quotas and requirements for the workload. | AWS’s reference architecture uses parallel primary and secondary feeds through MediaLive and MediaPackage. Confirm that its failover behavior meets your recovery objective. AWS solution overview. |
| Cost meters | Low-latency IVS charges for input and viewer output; output varies by resolution and billing region. Real-Time and Chat have separate meters. | MediaLive input/output channel hours, plus MediaPackage ingest/origination and CloudFront delivery in the described workflow. Recording, storage, and ad insertion may add charges. |
| Operational profile | A more direct route to an integrated application experience. | More service composition and configuration, useful when broadcast control, packaging, and delivery requirements call for it. |

Decide by working through the stream requirements
- Define the viewer experience. If viewers need to interact with hosts in near-real time, or the application needs chat, timed metadata, or managed player integration, evaluate IVS first. If the job is to encode a broadcast feed into an OTT output ladder, evaluate MediaLive.
- Specify formats and access controls. If clients need different formats, DRM integration, DVR or time-shifted viewing, or live-to-VOD, include MediaPackage in the design. AWS’s reference solution uses MediaPackage HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints and authorizes playback requests through CloudFront.
- Set a measurable reliability objective. Decide acceptable recovery time and failure scenarios, then assess redundant input and processing paths, failover, regional availability, and monitoring. AWS’s reference architecture documents primary and secondary feeds and logs across MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront; validate the design against your own recovery target.
- Build an estimate from usage. Model input or channel hours, viewer output hours and regions, encoding outputs, package ingest and origination, CDN delivery, recordings and storage, redundancy, and ad insertion. Do not assume one service’s meter represents the whole delivery cost.
- Verify ingest compatibility. Match the encoder’s protocol to the chosen ingest endpoint and confirm network/firewall access in the production environment.
How the MediaLive delivery workflow fits together
MediaLive is the encoding component, not the entire viewer-delivery workflow. In AWS’s reference solution, MediaLive ingests and transcodes feeds, MediaPackage prepares the output for playback, and CloudFront distributes authorized requests to MediaPackage endpoints. AWS says this architecture distributes the stream globally through CloudFront; actual viewer experience depends on the deployment and network conditions. AWS Live Streaming solution overview.

Use MediaPackage when packaging and origination capabilities are part of the requirement; do not add it automatically if the chosen IVS path already supplies the experience and outputs your application needs. The additional components bring their own configuration and usage charges.

Estimate the cost of the complete architecture
Amazon IVS low-latency
AWS describes low-latency IVS billing as input hours plus output hours viewed. Each submitted stream incurs input cost even if nobody watches, while viewer output is metered separately. Output rates vary by resolution and billing region; for this pricing detail, AWS identifies the viewer-serving location—not simply the configured channel Region—as the location relevant to the billing region. IVS Real-Time Streaming participant hours and IVS Chat message counts use separate meters. A limited first-year Free Tier for new AWS customers is subject to AWS’s stated channel and output limits. Verify current terms for your account and Regions on the Amazon IVS pricing page.
MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront
AWS’s comparison describes MediaLive pricing in input and output channel hours; MediaPackage pricing is based on ingested and originated data. CloudFront delivery is an additional usage charge in the reference workflow. Recorded video can add S3 storage and CDN delivery costs, while server-side ad insertion uses MediaTailor with separate insertion and transcoding charges. Check the relevant AWS pricing details and cost guidance for the services and Regions in your design.

Use example estimates only as examples
AWS’s deployment-planning example gives a total of $69.74 per hour for a one-hour event with 1,000 viewers under its particular modeled MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront configuration. AWS does not state a publication year for that example in the consulted page. It is not a quote for a different audience, resolution, Region, redundancy setup, or duration; the page also notes that variable bitrate and stream complexity can reduce output bandwidth relative to its estimate. Common selection mistakes to avoid
- Treating MediaLive as the whole OTT stack. It encodes; packaging, origination, and CDN delivery may require MediaPackage and CloudFront.
- Reading latency figures as a viewer guarantee. AWS’s IVS figures describe service capabilities, not a measured end-to-end result across every encoder, network, device, and viewer location.
- Comparing only encoding costs. Include ingest, output, packaging, CDN delivery, recording/storage, and any ad insertion in the architecture estimate.
- Assuming redundancy is automatic. The reference solution documents parallel primary and secondary feeds, but you must confirm that its failover and monitoring design meets your operational target.
- Choosing an encoder before choosing ingest. Confirm supported protocol and network access for the selected service first.
Where StreamNeo fits—and where it does not
StreamNeo is not an AWS workflow component and is not a replacement for IVS or a MediaLive/MediaPackage/CloudFront architecture. If your actual requirement is simpler—keep a pre-recorded YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos—StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not broadcast from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your video or playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required (one free day per account); the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
