An automatic watch winds its mainspring through wrist motion, so it runs without a battery—but it can stop if left unworn until its reserve runs out, and it generally needs more winding and maintenance attention than a quartz watch.
What an automatic watch asks of you
A rotor inside the watch turns as your wrist moves, winding the mainspring. The watch then runs on that stored energy. If you take it off for longer than its power reserve, it may stop; you may need to wind it and set the time again before wearing it.

Power reserve is specific to the watch’s movement, or calibre. Check the exact model’s official specification rather than assuming all automatic watches run for the same length of time off the wrist. Also check whether the maker gives instructions for manual winding and setting.

Start with fit and comfort
There is no universal case size or thickness that suits everyone. Try the watch on if possible, or compare its dimensions with a watch you already find comfortable. Notice whether the case sits securely on your wrist, whether its edges or thickness catch on sleeves, and whether the bracelet or strap feels right for how you spend the day. A secure, comfortable fit matters more than choosing a size based on a generic rule.

Consider legibility in the conditions where you will use it: whether the hands and markers are easy for you to read, and whether the dial design works with your usual clothes and routine. These are personal judgments, not specifications that establish one best style for everyone.
Compare the specifications that affect daily ownership
| What to check | Why it matters | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Power reserve | Determines how long the watch can run when fully wound and off your wrist. | The stated reserve for the exact model or calibre, plus the maker’s winding instructions. |
| Accuracy | Mechanical watches do not all keep time to the same tolerance. | The maker’s stated tolerance and whether the watch has chronometer certification. A tolerance is not a report of how a particular watch performed in your use. |
| Water resistance | A rating does not mean the watch is suitable for every kind of water exposure. | The model’s rating and its instructions about permitted activities and care. |
| Service guidance | Mechanical watches need maintenance, and recommended intervals vary. | The maker’s guidance for the exact model or calibre and the availability of an authorized service center. |
Set realistic expectations for accuracy
Automatic watches are mechanical, and their timekeeping can vary with factors including position, temperature, magnetism, shock, and winding state. Longines gives general examples of up to about ±10 seconds per day for a standard automatic, around ±5 seconds per day as typical mechanical performance, and −4/+6 seconds per day for chronometer-tested watches. These are manufacturer examples, not a guarantee for every model or an independent measurement of a watch you might buy. Check the specific watch’s stated tolerance and what its chronometer designation means.

Seiko says wearing a watch for more than eight hours a day is recommended to help avoid deviations associated with insufficient winding. That is Seiko’s guidance, not a universal daily-wear requirement for every automatic calibre. If you do not wear a watch regularly, consider whether its reserve and the effort of resetting it after it stops fit your habits.
Read water resistance as a care requirement
Seiko cautions that “The water resistance of a watch is not permanently guaranteed.” Gaskets can age, and shocks can affect water resistance, so do not treat a rating as permanent protection or infer that an unspecified “water resistant” label makes a watch suitable for swimming. Read the instructions for the exact model before exposing it to water.

- Do not pull or turn the crown while the watch is wet. Seiko also warns that direct faucet pressure can force moisture into a watch.
- After seawater exposure, Seiko advises rinsing with fresh water and drying with a soft cloth, while following the watch’s rating and instructions.
- Avoid baths and saunas: steam, soap, and hot-spring components may accelerate deterioration of water resistance.
- Wipe off moisture, sweat, and dirt with a soft, dry cloth.
Check service advice for the specific watch
There is no single service interval supported for all automatic watches. Seiko recommends service at an authorized service center approximately every three years, with climate and care affecting the recommendation. Longines gives approximately every five years as general guidance for maintaining accuracy. Those recommendations differ; follow the guidance for the particular watch and calibre rather than applying either interval universally.
Before buying, check where the maker directs owners for service and whether an authorized center is accessible to you. That practical detail can matter as much as a feature on the specification sheet when choosing a watch you plan to wear regularly.

A practical selection checklist
- Try the watch on, or compare its case dimensions with a watch you know fits. Check that the case, bracelet, or strap is comfortable for your routine.
- Confirm the exact model’s power reserve and winding or setting instructions.
- Read its accuracy specification; distinguish the stated tolerance from chronometer certification and from measured performance.
- Check the water-resistance rating and the manufacturer’s permitted-use and care instructions.
- Find the maker’s service recommendation for that model or calibre and identify the authorized service route.
- Choose the dial and finish you can comfortably read and will want to wear with your usual clothes.
