Windows selects a default based on the volume size, and Microsoft recommends defaults for general use. Choose a different value only when a specific filesystem, application, or workload calls for it.
What allocation unit size means
An allocation unit, also called a cluster, is the filesystem’s unit of space allocation. Files are stored using these units, and some filesystem limits depend on the selected size. The right setting therefore depends on the filesystem and how the drive will be used; there is no one value that is best for every drive.

For NTFS, Microsoft’s documentation identifies 4 KB as the default cluster size in its size-limit table. That figure is specific to NTFS and should not be assumed for other filesystems or operating systems.

How to choose
- General storage: Keep the default by leaving the allocation unit size unspecified. Microsoft says its defaults are recommended for general use in the Windows format command documentation.
- NTFS volume for a documented special case: If the volume will host large VHDX files or use Data Deduplication, review Microsoft’s specific guidance for 64 KB allocation units and Large FRS. This is a scenario-specific option, not a general performance recommendation.
- Removable or shared drive: First choose a filesystem supported by the devices that need to use the drive. Allocation-unit options differ by filesystem, and Microsoft’s documentation does not establish one best size for every cross-device setup.
- Performance tuning: Do not assume a larger unit will make a drive faster. The available documentation does not identify a universal speed winner; a performance choice needs evidence from the actual filesystem and workload.
If you have a concrete reason to depart from the default, compare filesystem and device compatibility, typical file sizes and workload, space use for small files, supported volume and file limits, and any application or service constraints.

When NTFS cluster size affects documented limits
Microsoft’s NTFS overview lists a 16 TB maximum volume and file size at a 4 KB cluster size and 256 TB at 64 KB. These figures belong to the page’s stated Windows-version and cluster-count context, not a universal guarantee for every drive. Supported limits can vary by Windows release, and applications or services may impose lower ceilings. See Microsoft’s NTFS overview for the context and additional supported values.
The same overview documents 64 KB allocation units with Large FRS for certain volumes hosting large VHDX files or Data Deduplication. Use that guidance only when the scenario applies, and check relevant system and application constraints before formatting.

Allocation-unit options differ by filesystem
Windows’ format command reference lists different supported allocation-unit values for FAT, FAT32, NTFS, exFAT, and ReFS. The documented ranges are not interchangeable:

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- FAT and FAT32: 512 bytes through 64 KB; 128 KB and 256 KB are also listed for sector sizes over 512 bytes.
- NTFS: 512 bytes through 2 MB.
- exFAT: 12 bytes and values from 1 KB through 32 MB.
- ReFS: 4 KB and 64 KB.
Confirm the applicable Windows version and filesystem constraints before overriding a default. Microsoft’s exFAT File System Specification describes clusters as consecutive sectors and an allocation bitmap that records whether clusters are allocated. Its maximum cluster size of 32 MB does not, by itself, make that size preferable for a particular drive.

Set a non-default size in Windows
Windows provides both the format command and PowerShell’s Format-Volume cmdlet. Formatting prepares a volume with a filesystem; confirm the target and preserve any data you need before running a formatting operation.
Command Prompt: format
The command accepts /A:<size> to specify an allocation-unit size. If you omit it, Windows chooses based on the volume size. Use an override only after checking that the selected value is valid for the filesystem and applicable system version.

PowerShell: Format-Volume
The Format-Volume cmdlet exposes the -AllocationUnitSize parameter. Microsoft’s NTFS overview gives a scenario-specific example for certain large-file or deduplication volumes: Format-Volume -AllocationUnitSize 65536 -UseLargeFRS. Treat this as guidance for those cases, not a routine command for general storage.
