Place a Wi-Fi extender between your router and the area with weak coverage, starting roughly halfway. The extender needs a usable signal from the router as well as a position close enough to serve the dead zone. If its router-link indicator is weak, move it closer to the router; if the link is good, test positions farther toward the area you want to cover.
Why the midpoint is a useful starting point
A wireless extender relays the router’s signal, so it depends on two links: a connection back to the router and a connection to devices in the weak-coverage area. Putting it deep inside a dead zone may leave the extender with too little signal to relay. NETGEAR and TP-Link both recommend positioning it between the router and the target area, within the router’s wireless range (NETGEAR setup guide; TP-Link placement guidance).

“Halfway” is a starting point, not a fixed distance. Walls, the floor plan, and the extender’s design affect where it can maintain a usable router connection. NETGEAR also says an extender can be moved nearer to the client device if it remains within range of the router.
Find the position in four steps
- Pair it near the router. NETGEAR recommends completing setup close to the router before moving the extender to its working location. Follow the setup instructions for your model (NETGEAR WiFi Range Extender Quick Setup Guide).
- Move it toward the coverage gap. Start around the midpoint between the router and the room or area with weak Wi-Fi, rather than placing it in the dead zone.
- Check the router-link indicator. Look for the signal or router-link LED in your extender’s manual. TP-Link says its Signal LED indicates connection strength. On the NETGEAR products covered by its support guidance, green means best, amber means good, and red means poor; these meanings are not universal across brands and models (TP-Link placement guidance; NETGEAR placement guidance).
- Test coverage and adjust. Check Wi-Fi in the target area. If the router link is weak, move the extender closer to the router. If the link is good but the target still has poor coverage, try another position nearer the target while keeping a usable router connection. Recheck the indicator after each move.
How far should the extender be from the router?
There is no distance that works for every home. TP-Link’s April 17, 2026 guidance gives rough starting examples for open layouts: about 25–40 feet for its external-antenna models and 20–35 feet for its internal-antenna models, provided the router signal is still strong at that spot. Those are manufacturer examples, not universal limits or a guarantee of coverage. Walls and other obstacles may mean placing the extender closer (TP-Link placement guidance).

Use the extender’s link indicator and a test in the target area to judge the actual location. A distance that works in an open layout may fail across multiple walls or in a different floor plan.
Choose a position with fewer obstacles and interference sources
Set a practical height and orientation
TP-Link recommends placing the models covered by its guidance roughly at router height—around four feet above the floor—rather than on the floor or in a corner. For those models, keep external antennas vertical and point the extender’s front toward the router. Check your own model’s instructions, since antenna layout and indicator behavior vary (TP-Link placement guidance).

Keep distance from signal blockers and potential interference
Try to avoid placing the extender beside mirrors or large metal surfaces, which can reflect signals, or behind walls, inside cabinets, and near masonry, which can absorb them. TP-Link also lists microwaves, cordless phones, refrigerators, and baby monitors as possible sources of interference. A clear line of sight can help where practical, but the best workable spot depends on your home’s layout; test alternatives rather than assuming one placement will suit every room (TP-Link placement guidance; NETGEAR placement guidance).

What to try when no wireless spot works
If obstacles or distance prevent a stable wireless connection to the router, TP-Link documents a wired fallback: place the extender near the coverage area, connect it to the router with Ethernet, and configure Access Point mode. This requires an Ethernet connection and AP-mode support in your device; it is not necessary for ordinary wireless extender placement (TP-Link placement guidance).
