Start by defining the job—not by browsing a list of popular apps—then compare candidates using the same checks for fit, compatibility, quality, permissions, full cost, support, and removal.
Start with the store problem, not an app category
Shopify’s core features may already cover part of the workflow you want to improve. Before searching, describe the gap in practical terms: What does the store need to do that it cannot do now? Would solving it increase sales, reduce manual work, or make store management easier? What result would tell you the app is worth keeping?

Turn the answer into a short brief that you can use to assess every candidate:
- Problem: Name the task or obstacle the app must address.
- Expected outcome: Specify what should become easier, faster, or possible.
- Must-haves: List only the functions the workflow genuinely requires.
- Constraints: Note your budget, store settings, team needs, and any existing tools the app must work with.
This brief helps distinguish a necessary capability from an attractive extra. If Shopify already provides what the store needs, a third-party app may add cost and another set of permissions without solving a real gap.

Compare each candidate against the same criteria
Use the following comparison table for apps intended to solve the same problem. It is a decision checklist, not a universal score: give more weight to the factors that matter most to your workflow and risk tolerance.

Check compatibility before you install
On an app’s Shopify App Store listing, look for a compatibility warning. Shopify marks an app “Not compatible” when your store settings do not meet the developer’s installation requirements, and the listing explains the mismatch. Treat that notice as a concrete issue to resolve, not a minor detail to work around casually.
Pay particular attention when the app depends on store settings that are hard to change, including business location or shipping countries. Also check whether the app works with the theme, channels, and customer markets involved in the workflow you identified. A listing that appears suitable in general may still be a poor fit for a specific store configuration.

Use quality signals without treating them as guarantees
What the Built for Shopify badge tells you
Shopify says the Built for Shopify badge is displayed on listings for apps that passed its testing against standards for performance, design, and integration. Shopify’s stated performance criterion limits the app’s storefront-speed impact to no more than 10 performance points. Shopify also says it reviews certifications annually and removes the status if an app no longer meets the requirements.
That is a Shopify certification signal, not independent proof of how an app will perform in every merchant’s particular store. Use it to help narrow your shortlist, then assess the app against your own requirements and setup.
How to read reviews
Shopify says app ratings are weighted toward reviews it considers more timely and relevant, and reviews may be removed or archived over time. Read recent written reviews rather than relying on the overall rating alone. Look for merchants describing a workflow like yours, and check whether the developer responds constructively to questions or reported problems. Reviews can help you identify patterns, but they describe other merchants’ circumstances, not a guarantee of your outcome.
Review requested permissions and privacy details
Before approving an installation, read the install screen’s list of personal data and store-data areas the app wants to access, including whether it can view or edit them. Open the developer’s privacy policy and check that it explains how the data involved in the app’s stated job is handled.
For apps that work with orders, distinguish between access to recent orders and access to all past and future orders. Shopify describes recent-orders access as covering the last 60 days and says it reviews requests for all-orders access to ensure that access is required. Ask whether each requested permission makes sense for the function you intend to use; do not approve a broader scope without understanding why the app needs it.
Calculate the full cost at your expected usage
App charges may be recurring, one-time, or based on usage. Shopify says most paid apps offer a free basic plan or trial, but an introductory option does not establish the long-term cost or value. Compare what the app will cost at the store’s expected usage, not only its lowest advertised tier.

- Include subscription charges and one-time fees.
- Estimate usage-based charges using the volume you expect the store to generate.
- Check whether the developer bills outside Shopify; those charges will not appear on the Shopify bill.
- Consider whether the app replaces a tool or process you already pay for, rather than duplicating it.
Shopify notes that charges for apps might continue if a store is paused or deactivated, until the apps are uninstalled. Include uninstalling apps in your store-closing or pause checklist so that unexpected ongoing charges are less likely.

You can search the Shopify App Store by keyword, browse a relevant category, or filter for Built for Shopify apps. Shopify also describes personalized app suggestions based on similarities such as industry, location, and store age. Use search results and recommendations as discovery leads, not as a substitute for checking fit, permissions, reviews, and cost.
Once you have candidates for the same job, compare them side by side using the table above. Eliminate apps that fail a must-have requirement, do not match your store settings, request access that you cannot justify, or exceed your budget at expected usage. Among the remaining options, give priority to the app whose workflow and support evidence best fit the way your store operates.

Install, review, and remove apps deliberately
Before installation
- Write down the store problem, expected outcome, and must-have requirements.
- Find candidates through App Store search, category browsing, or the Built for Shopify filter.
- Check the listing for compatibility requirements, recent written reviews, developer replies, available plans, and support information.
- On the install screen, review the requested personal-data and store-data access and open the developer’s privacy policy.
- Compare all likely charges, including usage-based costs and any billing outside Shopify.
After installation
Shopify’s app details in Settings > Apps can show billing and usage charges, privacy details, permissions, recent activity, compatibility issues, and available extensions, functions, and pixels. Use that view to understand what the installed app is doing and whether its access remains appropriate.
For third-party apps, Shopify shows the access areas, view or edit permissions, and recent activity. It also displays an Unused access section for permissions that have not been used in the last 30 days. Review that section and reconsider access the app no longer needs.
When an app is no longer needed
Uninstalling revokes the app’s access. Shopify says it sends the developer a request to erase customer personal information collected during installation after 48 hours. That is a deletion request, not confirmation that erasure has been completed. Contact the developer directly if you need confirmation that the data was deleted.

Can app developers pay to appear in Shopify’s personalized recommendations?
Shopify says developers cannot pay to have an app appear in those recommendations. The suggestions are based on similarities such as industry, location, and store age.
Is there a recommended number of apps to install?
Shopify does not provide a universal recommended app count. The useful number depends on the store’s actual workflows; an app should have a defined job rather than be installed simply to increase the count.
Can I install any app from a third-party install link?
Shopify says third-party install links work only for apps created before December 5, 2019. Apps created after that date cannot be installed through those links.
