Start by choosing the right number of drive bays, then check software, drive compatibility, and whether your home network can use the NAS’s Ethernet speed. No single model is best for every home.
What a home NAS can do
A network-attached storage device (NAS) connects to your home network so multiple computers and other devices can use a shared storage location. Depending on its software, it can also support file sharing, syncing, photo management, and backups. Synology describes these capabilities for its DS224+.

A NAS is useful when you want files in one place rather than scattered across devices. It can be part of a household backup routine, but it is not automatically a complete backup plan: a second copy stored elsewhere can help address risks that a single device at home cannot.

How many drive bays do you need?
Bay count determines how many drives the enclosure can hold and how much room you have to expand. It does not, by itself, tell you how much usable storage you will get. That depends on the drive capacities and storage layout you choose; redundancy can use some capacity to help keep data available if a drive fails.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Reliable External Storage System for Individuals and Business】The 4 Bay Hard Drive Enclosure supports 2.5/3.5 inches HDD and SSD, max capacity up to 80TB( 20TB for each hard drive), it's a ideal external hard drive enclosure for personal or enterprise using.Save space on your desktop or laptop.
- 【No heat】The 4 bay hard drive reader built in Aluminum-Alloy materials and 2 inch Fan.Maximize the security of your data.NOTE:Fan noise is around 40-50 decibels, not recommended if you are very sensitive to noise.
- 【Up to 5Gbps】This 4 bay enclosure equips with advanced chip and USB 3.0 output interface, Max 5Gbps under UASP control.Transfer 1G movie in 3-5 seconds with USB 3.0 Ports, which is 10 times faster than USB 2.0.
- 【Wide Compatibility, Plug and Play】Equipped with USB A/C 3.0 Cable Cable.Compatible with Windows 7 and above, Mac 9.1 and above, Linux.Plug and play, no fuss, no muss.
- 【Stable power supply】Equipped with DC 12V power adapter to provide stability for high-speed transmission.
- Two bays: A compact starting point for shared files, photos, and backups. The Synology DS224+ is an example of a two-bay enclosure.
- More bays: More drive positions can offer additional capacity or more flexibility as storage needs grow, but the enclosure and drives still need to fit your budget and space.
Estimate how much data you have now and how quickly it is growing before choosing. Do not treat the sum of drive capacities as guaranteed usable capacity: the storage arrangement changes the result.

| Model | What the cited material describes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Synology DS224+ | Compact two-bay NAS with DSM, centralized file and photo management, backup, and Btrfs snapshot capabilities. | Drives are sold separately. Check Synology’s current drive compatibility list. |
| Synology DS925+ | Positioned by Synology for home-office and edge storage, with backup, protection, recovery, and synchronization functions. | Match its features and expansion potential to your household’s actual needs; the product page does not establish a consumer-market ranking. |
| QNAP TS-264 | QNAP advertises 2.5GbE and QTS features including backup and cloud sync. | Faster Ethernet only helps if the rest of the network path supports it. QNAP’s page reproduces a Wirecutter recommendation dated November 7, 2023; that is not a current 2026 verdict. |
For additional candidates, Android Central’s 2026 home NAS guide discusses models including the Synology DS225+, DS223j, ASUSTOR AS5402T, and TerraMaster F4-424 Max for different workloads. Those are the guide’s editorial selections, not the result of a controlled comparison described here.
Will the NAS be fast enough on your network?
Compare the NAS’s Ethernet port with the router or switch it connects to and the network connection on the device that will access the files. A 2.5GbE port on the NAS alone does not guarantee 2.5GbE transfers: the other links in the path must also support that speed. For a home that uses 1GbE throughout, paying for a faster NAS connection may not improve ordinary transfers unless the network is upgraded too.

- After plugging in the USB storage, you can share photo files at any for time for multimedia playback.
- USB3.0 300Mbps high-speed transmission, support 3.5in serial hard disk, backup storage data through computer or mobile phone and other devices
- portable wireless and functions as a NAS storage, with standard 12V 2A power adapter supports 24 hours of continuous work.
- Wireless connectivity tablets and smartphones, allows more than 10 users to share data simultaneously.
- Metal material, better heat dissipation, and plastic bracket can be placed arbitrarily.
Consider the workload as well. Moving large video files, streaming media, and routine document backups place different demands on storage and networking. TechRadar’s NAS buying guide identifies bay count, Ethernet standard, enclosure size, and noise as selection criteria; Android Central also discusses workload, transcoding, extensibility, photo backup, and RAID.
Check software, backup features, and drive compatibility
Hardware is only part of a NAS. The software determines how you manage files, photos, backups, syncing, and other services. Read the feature list for the exact model and consider whether its interface and available apps suit the people who will use it.

Synology describes Btrfs snapshots on the DS224+ as a way to reverse unintended or malicious changes. Snapshots can help with particular recovery scenarios, but they are not a substitute for maintaining another copy of important files. Features advertised by a manufacturer should be understood as product capabilities, not proof that one system is universally more reliable or faster.
Check what is included in the enclosure price and whether drives are sold separately. Synology states that DS224+ drives are sold separately and directs buyers to its compatibility list. Verify the drive models you intend to use against the manufacturer’s current list before purchasing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a NAS for your household
- List the data and users. Identify which computers, phones, and household members need shared files, photo storage, or backups.
- Estimate capacity and growth. Choose a bay count that fits current storage and plausible future needs, then account for the effect of your storage layout on usable capacity.
- Match network speed to the full connection path. Check the NAS, router or switch, and client devices before expecting a faster Ethernet link to make transfers faster.
- Compare software and recovery needs. Look for the backup, photo, sync, and snapshot features you will actually use, and plan for a copy outside the NAS where appropriate.
- Confirm enclosure and drive costs. Check whether drives are included, confirm compatibility, and consider the enclosure’s size and noise in its intended location.
- Decide how much setup you want. A feature-rich system may offer more ways to manage storage, but it can also require more configuration than a simple shared folder.
What to know about remote access
Remote access can make files available when you are away from home, but it also involves security choices. Synology’s DS224+ datasheet says, “Access your storage securely from anywhere without configuring complex port forwarding rules by enabling Synology QuickConnect.” That describes a Synology feature; it is not a general security guarantee for every NAS or configuration. Avoid assuming that exposing a NAS directly to the internet is safe without reviewing the manufacturer’s security guidance and your setup.
How to think about RAID and backups
RAID and similar storage layouts can help with certain drive-failure scenarios, while snapshots can help recover from some file changes. Neither automatically provides a separate copy outside the NAS. If files matter, plan how another copy will be kept and how you would restore it; choose the approach based on the risks you need to cover rather than treating a bay count or redundancy feature as a complete backup guarantee.
