The best Minecraft host for a group of friends is the one that matches your edition, mod workload, player count and location—not the plan with the largest advertised slot number. Confirm whether everyone plays Java or Bedrock, estimate simultaneous players, reserve enough RAM and CPU headroom, and select a data-center region close to most of the group. For three to six friends running vanilla Minecraft, comparing plans in the 2–4GB range is a sensible starting point. Modpacks, plugins and always-on worlds require more careful sizing.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Java servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
Use the checklist below before paying: verify edition and crossplay support, check the renewal price and add-ons, test latency from the actual players, confirm automated backups and world restoration, and make sure the control panel supports the files and modpacks you intend to use.

Minecraft Java Edition and Minecraft Bedrock Edition are separate compatibility decisions. Official Minecraft support requires players to use matching editions and current versions, with a stable internet or LAN connection; console players may also need the platform’s online subscription. A Java server does not automatically accept Bedrock clients, and a Bedrock server does not automatically accept Java clients.
When everyone uses Java
Java hosting is the usual choice for PC groups that want extensive server-file access, plugins, datapacks or Java modpacks. Confirm that the host supports the Minecraft version your group runs and that its panel lets you change the server type, upload files and edit configuration files.

When everyone uses Bedrock
Choose a plan that explicitly lists Bedrock support. Ask whether the advertised plan includes the Bedrock server software you need, whether console connections are supported, and which ports or account settings players must use. Do not assume that a Java-oriented plan will provide an equivalent Bedrock experience.
When the group is mixed
Mixed PC, console and mobile groups need a documented crossplay method. Some hosts support a bridge configuration that allows Bedrock clients to join a Java server, but this is not universal and can require specific server software, plugins, authentication settings and version combinations. Get the provider to confirm the exact Java/Bedrock combination before purchase, then test with one player on each platform during the refund or trial period if one is offered.
| Group setup | What to verify before ordering | Common failure |
|---|---|---|
| Java only | Java version, supported server software, mod/plugin file access | A client or modpack runs a different game version |
| Bedrock only | Bedrock edition support, console/mobile access, required ports | A Java-only plan is purchased |
| Java and Bedrock together | A provider-documented bridge, compatible versions and setup instructions | Players can see the server but cannot authenticate or join |
| Console players | Platform online-subscription requirements and any network restrictions | The host works for PC players but not the console account |
2. Estimate players and workload, not just slots
Concurrent players and server workload determine capacity. A quiet vanilla world with three friends is very different from a continuously explored world with six players, a large render distance, ten plugins and several automated farms. Ask how many people will be online at the same time, not how many friends are in the group chat.
Vanilla Java starting points
BisectHosting’s displayed guidance recommends 2GB for three players, 3GB for four players and 4GB for six players. Those figures are starting points for the cited group sizes, not performance guarantees. Leave additional headroom if players generate new terrain quickly, use a high simulation distance or keep the world online around the clock.
Plugins and datapacks
Shockbyte’s September 11, 2024 guidance recommends at least 3GB for Minecraft 1.17 and newer, then adds 1GB for every five additional players and 1GB for every ten plugins. Treat this as dated planning guidance rather than a universal formula: plugin quality, configuration, world size and CPU speed can change the result. A lightweight permissions plugin and a heavy map-rendering plugin do not impose the same load.

Modpacks
Mods generally raise both memory use and CPU demand. Shockbyte recommends 8GB minimum for Minecraft 1.17 and newer modpacks, plus 1GB for every additional three players; it notes that extra-large packs may need another 1–2GB. The modpack publisher’s own requirement takes priority, especially for packs with large technology, automation or world-generation systems. Check whether the stated memory is a minimum for starting the pack or a recommendation for a playable multiplayer server.

Why CPU still matters
Minecraft Java performance depends heavily on single-thread CPU speed for the main game tick. More RAM cannot repair a CPU that cannot process entity AI, redstone, chunk generation or plugin tasks quickly enough. Compare the processor allocation, whether CPU resources are shared, and whether the host discloses throttling or fair-use limits. NVMe storage helps world saves and chunk access, but it does not replace adequate CPU capacity.
3. Match the host to your group
Three to six friends playing vanilla
Start by comparing 2–4GB plans, then rank them by region, CPU allocation, backup policy and renewal price. A modest plan near your players with reliable restoration is usually preferable to a larger plan on another continent. Confirm that the provider lets you increase RAM later without rebuilding the world.
Java with plugins or datapacks
Begin above the vanilla baseline and apply the provider’s plugin guidance to your expected player count. Keep spare memory for updates and temporary spikes. Ask whether the panel can install the server software and plugins you need, whether you can upload custom JAR files, and whether support will help identify a plugin that causes crashes.
Modded Java
Use the modpack publisher’s requirement as the budget anchor. An 8GB plan is a cited starting point for many Minecraft 1.17 and newer modpack cases, but large packs and additional players can push the requirement higher. Confirm the exact loader, game version and pack release, because a server and client that differ by even one required mod or version may fail to connect.

Mixed PC, console and mobile group
Resolve Bedrock support and the documented crossplay method before comparing memory or price. Have one representative player from each platform join a test world. If a provider cannot explain the bridge setup, authentication behavior and supported versions in writing, choose a plan with clearly documented compatibility instead.
An always-on shared world
Prioritize automated backups, a tested restore process, DDoS mitigation, support availability and a region close to most players. A server that is technically online but cannot restore a corrupted world is a poor fit for a long-running community world.
4. Realms or an independent server host?
Official Realms is designed for a simpler, managed experience: the owner creates a world through Minecraft’s own interface and invites players without administering a separate control panel. That convenience can be valuable when the group wants an uncomplicated vanilla world and does not need extensive file or mod control.
An independent host is the better fit when you need Java server files, custom plugins, large modpacks, scheduled backups, selectable data-center regions, migration tools or deeper performance tuning. You are also responsible for more decisions: server software, permissions, updates, backups and troubleshooting. Compare the total recurring cost and the time someone in the group is willing to spend administering it.
Recommended Free Tools
For a short-lived vanilla game with a few trusted friends, managed simplicity can outweigh control. For a persistent world, a modded community or a mixed-platform group, the independent host’s documented compatibility and administrative features usually matter more than the lowest entry price.

5. Compare providers by documented capabilities
Provider feature lists are claims to verify at checkout; no independent uptime, latency or hands-on performance test establishes a universal winner. The following comparison uses each provider’s stated features and policies, not a benchmark.
| Provider | Stated strengths | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| BisectHosting | Java and Bedrock support, 21 locations, free DDoS protection, NVMe storage, 24/7/365 support and one-click access to more than 2,300 modpacks; displayed guidance of 2GB for three players, 3GB for four and 4GB for six | Which locations and modpacks are included in the plan you select, the renewal price, CPU allocation and the exact Bedrock/crossplay method |
| Apex Hosting | Instant setup, modpack support, DDoS protection, automated backups, a web control panel, worldwide test servers and dedicated-hardware options; Java plans emphasize access to core files and mod/plugin ecosystems | Backup retention and restore procedure, hardware allocation on the chosen tier, region latency and any fees for extra storage or dedicated resources |
| Shockbyte | Published RAM guidance for Minecraft 1.17+, plugins and modpacks, including the 8GB modpack starting point | Whether current plans, locations, CPU limits and backup features match the dated September 11, 2024 guidance |
| PebbleHost | Configurable or unlimited slot settings, subject to allocated CPU and RAM | Its terms state that performance remains resource-bound, customers must maintain off-site backups and automatic backup plugins are not permitted under the cited terms; verify the current policy before ordering |
A high slot limit is not a performance specification. PebbleHost’s terms explicitly tie practical capacity to CPU, RAM and other allocations, an important reminder to compare resources rather than the number printed beside the plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute6. Pick a region and test real latency
Choose the data-center region closest to the majority of players, not necessarily the country where the server owner lives. If friends are spread across continents, select the location that gives the best compromise or consider whether the group can accept one region having higher ping.
Use the provider’s test server or network test where available. Apex advertises worldwide test servers, and BisectHosting advertises 21 locations. Have several players test at the same time of day they normally play. Record the approximate ping, watch for packet loss and check whether movement feels responsive while someone generates new chunks. A low ping to a test endpoint does not prove that the paid server will remain uncongested, so repeat the check after provisioning when possible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Check backups, restores, security and support
Backups
Find out whether backups are automatic, how many copies are retained, where they are stored, and whether restoring one requires a ticket or a control-panel action. Download an occasional copy of the world yourself. A backup that cannot be retrieved outside the host is not a complete disaster-recovery plan.
Best Value
Restore testing
Before inviting the whole group, create a small test world, make a change, restore the backup and confirm that the world, player inventories and server settings return as expected. Document the restore steps so another friend can perform them if the owner is unavailable.
DDoS mitigation and account security
DDoS protection can keep a server reachable during an attack, but it does not protect weak panel passwords or compromised operator accounts. Use unique passwords, enable multi-factor authentication when offered, limit operator permissions and remove former players from the whitelist.
Support
Check the support hours, response channels and scope. BisectHosting advertises 24/7/365 support; that is an availability claim, not a promise that every mod conflict will be fixed. Ask a pre-sales question about your exact version and modpack and judge whether the answer is specific enough to trust.
8. Provision and configure the server
- List the technical requirements. Write down the edition, Minecraft version, expected simultaneous players, mods or plugins, required loader, preferred region and whether consoles or mobile devices must connect.
- Compare like-for-like plans. Record included RAM, CPU allocation, storage type and amount, locations, backup retention, DDoS protection, support hours and the renewal price. Note taxes, setup fees and paid add-ons separately.
- Create the instance. Select the exact game version and server software. Do not install a modpack until the server and every client use the required loader and release.
- Secure access. Change the panel password, enable multi-factor authentication, set a whitelist and give operator status only to people who need it.
- Upload or generate the world. Use the panel’s file manager or documented transfer method. Stop the server before replacing world files, and keep the original world as a local backup.
- Install mods, plugins or datapacks. Follow the pack author’s installation order. Install only server-side components on the server and ensure clients receive every required client-side component.
- Set performance options. Choose a sensible view and simulation distance, pregenerate heavily traveled areas if the software supports it, and avoid enabling expensive features until the baseline is stable.
- Test with the real group. Have players from each platform join, explore new terrain, use the busiest farms and trigger normal plugin or mod features. Watch memory, CPU, tick time and console errors.
- Schedule maintenance. Enable the host’s backup schedule, download an off-site copy, record the restore procedure and decide who approves updates.
9. Troubleshoot the problems friends notice first
Players cannot connect
- Confirm the server is running and the address and port are correct.
- Check that the client and server use the same edition and game version.
- For modded Java, compare the loader, mod list and mod versions on every client.
- For crossplay, verify that the bridge software is installed, configured and supported for the current versions.
- Check console or platform online-subscription requirements for console players.
Lag spikes or rubber-banding
- Measure player ping and packet loss from several locations.
- Check CPU and tick-time graphs while new chunks generate or farms run.
- Reduce simulation distance and pause intensive plugins or datapacks to isolate the cause.
- Move to a nearer region or a plan with stronger CPU allocation if network latency or main-thread saturation is persistent.
Out-of-memory crashes
- Read the crash log to distinguish a memory error from a mod or plugin exception.
- Remove recently added components and retest one at a time.
- Increase RAM only after confirming the plan’s CPU and storage are adequate; extra memory cannot fix incompatible code.
- Use the modpack publisher’s requirement and account for additional players rather than relying on a generic vanilla estimate.
World loss or rollback
- Stop writing to the affected world and preserve the current files.
- Restore the newest known-good backup in a separate instance if possible.
- Compare the restored world with your off-site copy and document the incident before reopening access.
- If the host cannot restore the world, provide your own backup to support or migrate to another provider.
10. Calculate the real recurring cost
Compare the amount charged after any introductory period, not only the first invoice. Include renewal pricing, taxes, storage overages, additional backup space, dedicated CPU options, extra databases, reserved addresses and migration services. A cheap plan that requires paid upgrades for backups or the correct region may cost more over a year than a slightly larger plan with those features included.
Check cancellation terms and data-export rights. Before ending a subscription, download the world, server configuration, permission files and mod or plugin list. Confirm how long the provider retains data after cancellation and whether a suspended server can still be exported.
11. A practical decision rule
- Start with compatibility: eliminate every plan that does not explicitly support your edition and required crossplay method.
- Size the workload: use the published vanilla or modpack figures as a baseline, then add headroom for players, plugins, world generation and growth.
- Choose geography: test latency from the actual group and prefer a region that keeps most players responsive.
- Verify operations: confirm backups, restore access, file management, support and DDoS mitigation.
- Price the full term: compare renewal cost, taxes and add-ons, then check migration and cancellation policies.
- Run a group test: have every platform and a representative workload connect before committing the long-term world.
For a small vanilla group, the winning plan is normally a well-located 2–4GB instance with dependable backups and transparent renewal terms. For plugins, datapacks or modpacks, follow the workload-specific guidance and prioritize CPU quality and support over an oversized slot count. For a mixed-platform group, documented crossplay compatibility is the non-negotiable requirement.
