How to Choose Speakers for a QED-Cabled Streaming Setup

QED’s Connect range is about cables and connections, not speaker models. Choose speakers by system type and amplifier compatibility, then match cables to the equipment’s actual inputs and outputs.

QED’s researched product pages describe a cable and connectivity range, not a lineup of speakers. So the practical question is which speakers suit your streaming source and amplifier—and which QED cable fits the connection. For passive speakers, check the amplifier’s load guidance and the speakers’ published specifications before buying.

Does QED make speakers?

The QED pages relevant here cover cables and connections rather than speaker models. QED’s Connect range includes products for different types of connections, while its Connect Speaker Cable is described for connecting speakers to an amplifier or AV receiver. That supports choosing speakers for a system that uses QED cable; it does not support a QED-branded speaker shortlist or model comparison.

Choose the system architecture first

A streaming setup can use separate components or combine functions in one device. Decide whether your speakers are passive or powered, and where streaming and amplification happen, before choosing cables.

Passive speakers

Passive speakers need a suitable amplifier. A basic chain is streaming source → amplifier → passive speakers, with speaker cable running from the amplifier to the speakers. The source might be a separate streamer, phone, computer, TV, or DAC; the amplifier may also have streaming built in. QED’s 2024 brochure depicts streamer-to-stereo-amplifier connections separately from amplifier-to-speaker cable connections. Check the manuals for your particular devices to confirm whether any functions are combined.

Powered or active speakers

Powered or active speakers have amplification built in, so they do not use the same amplifier-to-passive-speaker wiring chain. Confirm the specific speakers’ inputs and the source’s outputs: the right connection depends on the equipment, not on a universal “streaming cable.” The QED evidence cited here establishes its speaker-cable use for connections to an amplifier or AV receiver, not a particular powered-speaker setup.

Check that passive speakers suit the amplifier

Compare the speaker’s published nominal impedance with the amplifier manufacturer’s supported load and any other stated requirements. Use the manual for the exact amplifier and speaker models; do not assume that one amplifier’s limits apply to another. For example, Sonos says its Amp can drive speakers with nominal impedance above 4 ohms and provides separate power-rating guidance in its Amp Guide. That is guidance for Sonos Amp only, not a general threshold for streaming amplifiers.

QED’s support article about its speaker switches discusses a specific switch-and-speaker load scenario, not a universal amplifier rule. Its guidance should not be used to infer compatibility for an unrelated amplifier or a setup without that switch: QED’s speaker-switch impedance guidance.

Match cables to the actual connections

Identify the output on the streaming source and the matching input on the amplifier or speakers, then choose a cable with the appropriate connection type and enough length. QED lists products including USB, 3.5 mm, optical, and speaker cables in its Connect range; those options serve different connections and are not interchangeable.

For passive speakers, QED positions its Connect Speaker Cable between speakers and an amplifier or AV receiver. Check the product details and the equipment manuals for how the cable terminates and whether it suits your connection. Measure the route between components so the cable reaches without being stretched.

The product page states that this cable has 37 strands and 99.99% oxygen-free copper conductors. Those are construction specifications; by themselves, they do not establish compatibility with a particular system or prove an audible improvement.

Account for your room and listening needs

Room, speaker placement, and the listening level you want all matter when selecting speakers. The sources cited here do not establish a reliable room-size chart or compare speaker models, so use the speaker manufacturer’s placement and setup guidance and, where possible, audition candidates in conditions similar to your own. A specific recommendation also needs your budget, room, amplifier model, and current specifications for the products under consideration.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Map the components: decide whether streaming is built into the amplifier or comes from a separate source, and whether the speakers are passive or powered.
  2. For passive speakers, verify the load: compare the speaker’s published nominal impedance and other requirements with the exact amplifier’s manual.
  3. Match the signal connection: identify the source output and amplifier or speaker input before choosing a USB, 3.5 mm, optical, or other connection cable.
  4. Choose speaker cable only for the passive-speaker leg: check the run length and connection requirements between amplifier and speakers.
  5. Check the final setup: follow the equipment manuals for placement, connection, and operation; do not infer compatibility from the QED cable brand alone.
