Choose light-up shoes the way you would choose any everyday shoe: fit the child’s larger foot, allow room for the toes, and check that the shoe is light, flexible, breathable and securely fastened. Then add two light-up-specific checks: make sure a child cannot access the battery compartment, and follow the exact model’s care and charging instructions. The lights do not make up for poor fit or unsuitable construction.
That order matters. A shoe can look appealing in a product photo and still be too narrow, too heavy or difficult to keep on the child’s foot. Start with the child’s measured feet and the particular shoe’s construction; consider its electronics only after it meets those everyday needs.

Start with fit, not the size printed on the box
Children’s shoe sizes vary among brands, and children’s feet grow. The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) identifies fit and room for growth as the most important considerations when choosing children’s shoes. Use the child’s measured feet and the fit of the particular shoe rather than relying on age, a previous pair’s size or a universal rule to buy one size larger.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA size label is a starting point for comparing options, not proof that a shoe fits. Even if a child has worn the same nominal size in another brand, compare the new pair against the child’s feet and check how it holds the heel and forefoot. This is especially useful when shopping online: the model’s listed size cannot tell you whether its toe box will suit the child’s foot or whether its closure will hold securely.

Check both feet and fit the larger one
Measure both feet and use the larger foot when choosing a size. If the feet differ, the shoe needs to fit the larger one without making the other foot uncomfortably loose. Check sizing every 4–6 months, as APMA recommends, and sooner if the shoes seem tight or the child’s feet have grown. Brand and style differences mean a size that worked in one pair may not work in another.
For a practical check, have the child try on both shoes, not just the shoe for the larger foot. Fasten them as they would normally be worn, then check whether the fit is comfortable on each side. The goal is not to force both feet into the same feel at the expense of the larger foot, nor to let the smaller shoe slip around. If the difference makes it hard to find a pair that stays comfortable and secure, a podiatrist can help assess the fit.
Check length, width and toe movement
APMA recommends about 10–15 mm of space in front of the longest toe. The toe box should be at least as wide as the widest part of the foot. Check that the child can move their toes and that the shoe does not pinch across the forefoot. Extra length alone does not make a shoe a good fit if it is too narrow, too wide or difficult to hold securely on the foot.
Check the space in front of the longest toe while the child is standing in the shoe, and look at the shape of the toe box as well as the shoe’s length. The 10–15 mm recommendation is room at the toes, not a direction to buy every shoe a fixed number of sizes larger. A shoe that is longer but too narrow can still pinch; one that is too wide or too loose may not hold the foot comfortably. There is no universal “size up” amount in APMA’s guidance.
Use the fit check as a whole: length, width, toe movement and how securely the shoe stays on. If the child says the shoe pinches, rubs or feels uncomfortable, do not let a light feature or an attractive design outweigh that fit information. A comfortable fit is a better basis for the purchase than an age label or a promise of room to grow that has not been checked on the child’s foot.
Check the heel and closure
With the shoe fastened, check that the heel and upper hold the foot comfortably and that the closure keeps the shoe in place. Laces and hook-and-loop fasteners are examples of secure closures recommended by APMA. A shoe that slips, rubs or requires the child to curl their toes to keep it on is not a good everyday choice, even if its length seems right.
Secure closure and good fit work together. A closure cannot correct a shoe that is too short or too narrow, and a shoe that fits in length may still be a poor choice if it will not stay comfortably on the foot. When comparing two otherwise suitable pairs, include the closure in the decision: it should secure the shoe without making it uncomfortable for the child.

These measurements are practical fitting recommendations, not a guarantee that a shoe will prevent injury or correct a foot condition. If fit remains difficult or the child has a gait concern or unusual wear on their shoes, ask an APMA member podiatrist for advice.

Check whether the shoe is suitable for everyday wear
For school-aged children, APMA recommends light, flexible, flat-soled shoes for everyday use unless a specific pathology requires a modification. These are useful criteria for judging a light-up style: assess the whole shoe, not just its lights, and do not assume an electronic feature compensates for a heavy, stiff or poorly fitting design.
These are selection criteria for the shoe as a whole, not a special endorsement of any light-up design. The lighting hardware does not change the need to check the shoe’s weight, sole, upper, closure and fit. If the child has a diagnosed foot condition or has been given footwear guidance, that individual advice takes priority over general recommendations for school-aged children.
Compare the construction
| What to check | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | A light shoe, rather than an unnecessarily heavy one | Lightness is part of APMA’s everyday-shoe guidance for school-aged children. |
| Sole | A sole that flexes and is relatively flat | APMA recommends flexible, flat-soled everyday shoes unless a specific condition calls for a modification. |
| Upper material | Breathable material; APMA gives mesh and leather as examples | Breathable materials can accommodate children’s high sweat rates. |
| Closure | A closure that secures the shoe comfortably, such as laces or hook-and-loop fasteners | A secure closure helps hold the shoe in place; it does not replace a proper length and width fit. |
| Fit | Suitable length and width, room at the toes, and a comfortable hold at the heel | Fit remains the primary selection criterion, regardless of the light-up feature. |
When comparing product listings, look beyond the lights and ask whether the listing lets you assess these points. Product images may show the overall shape and materials, but the actual fit still needs to be checked on the child. If the listing does not provide enough detail to judge a feature such as the closure or battery compartment, avoid assuming that it is suitable simply because the shoe is marketed for children.
Some children need a shoe modified for a specific pathology. In that case, general everyday-shoe criteria do not override the child’s clinical needs; follow the advice of the treating health professional.
Inspect the battery compartment before and after buying
Light-up shoes may contain button batteries. Health Canada advises shoppers to look for product images showing a secure battery compartment that children cannot access, then to double-check that protection when the item arrives. Do not assume that every light-up shoe uses the same battery design or compartment.
This check is separate from ordinary fit. A shoe that fits well still needs a secure battery compartment, and a well-protected compartment does not make an uncomfortable shoe a good fit. Before ordering, see whether the listing or product images show how the compartment is secured. Once the pair is in hand, inspect the actual shoe rather than relying only on the online photographs.
- Before purchase: Look for clear product images or information showing that the battery compartment is secured against access by children. If the listing does not establish how the compartment is protected, do not treat the lights alone as evidence that the shoe is suitable.
- When the shoes arrive: Inspect the actual pair and confirm that the compartment is secure and not accessible to the child. Product images may not be enough to assess the item in hand.
- During use: Supervise children using products that contain button batteries. Do not let children handle or remove the batteries.
- If a battery is used or removed: Dispose of used batteries promptly and properly, following the applicable local disposal guidance.
Battery construction differs by product. Some light-up shoes use sealed, non-replaceable cells; others may differ. Do not try to open a compartment or replace a battery unless the instructions for that exact model say to do so. For example, Skechers says its standard kids’ S-Lights and Twinkle Toes styles use sealed batteries that are not replaceable, and its Australian support guidance warns against accessing the battery. Those statements apply to the described styles, not every light-up shoe.
Do not infer that a shoe has replaceable batteries because its lights stop working, or that every light-up shoe is sealed because a familiar brand uses sealed batteries on some styles. Check the exact model’s instructions. If there is a problem with the lighting, follow the manufacturer’s guidance rather than opening the compartment or trying to repair it yourself.

Know what to do if ingestion is suspected
A swallowed button battery can lodge in a child’s throat and trigger a chemical reaction that burns through the esophagus in as little as two hours, Health Canada warns. If you suspect a child has swallowed a button battery, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Do not wait for symptoms.
The two-hour warning describes how quickly a severe injury can occur; it is not an estimate of how likely a child is to swallow a battery from a particular shoe. The practical response is the same if ingestion is suspected: treat it as an emergency and seek medical attention right away, without waiting to see whether symptoms develop.
Follow the care instructions for the exact style
Cleaning and water limits can matter because the electronics are part of the shoe. Check the care label and instructions for the exact model rather than assuming that all light-up shoes can be washed the same way.
In particular, do not assume that a shoe can go through a washing machine just because another pair of children’s shoes could. Manufacturers’ care directions can differ by style and power design. If the instructions are unclear, use the manufacturer’s guidance for that model rather than experimenting with a washing method or water exposure that could affect the electronics.
For Skechers styles covered by its guidance
A Skechers parent guide dated February 16, 2026, says to spot-clean the documented light-up styles with mild soap and warm water, wipe away residue with a damp cloth, and air-dry them away from direct heat. It says not to put those shoes in a washing machine or dryer and not to submerge them, because submersion may affect the electronics. These are brand- and style-specific instructions, not a care rule for every manufacturer.
For those covered Skechers styles, spot-cleaning means cleaning the shoe’s surface rather than soaking the entire shoe. After wiping away residue with a damp cloth, let the pair air-dry away from direct heat. The instructions do not say to use a dryer or to submerge the shoe to remove dirt. For other brands or styles, check their own care information rather than carrying over this advice automatically.
For rechargeable styles
Skechers’ Australian customer-support guidance says its rechargeable light-up styles should be charged only with the supplied cable and should not be left plugged in overnight. This advice is specific to the rechargeable styles covered by that regional support page. Do not apply it to non-rechargeable shoes or assume another brand uses the same charging method; use the instructions supplied for the shoe you own.

First establish whether the exact pair is rechargeable at all. The guidance for rechargeable styles does not apply to every shoe with lights, and the instructions for one brand or region should not be treated as universal charging advice. If the model is rechargeable, use the cable and directions that came with it; do not substitute a charging method based on a different shoe.

Use a comparison checklist when choosing between pairs
If more than one pair seems suitable, compare the details that affect fit, everyday use and battery handling. A brand name or a brighter display is not a substitute for checking the particular model.
A useful comparison is not a contest over which pair has the most elaborate lights. First rule out any pair that does not fit the child comfortably or meet their specific footwear needs. Among the remaining options, compare how light and flexible the shoe is, whether its material is breathable, how securely it fastens, how the battery compartment is protected, and whether care and power instructions are clear.
- Fit: Does the pair suit the child’s measured larger foot, provide roughly 10–15 mm of toe room, and have a toe box at least as wide as the foot’s widest part?
- Everyday construction: Is the shoe light and flexible, with a relatively flat sole and breathable upper material? Does the closure hold the shoe comfortably?
- Battery access: Does the product information show a compartment that children cannot access, and can you confirm its security on the pair after delivery?
- Care: Are the cleaning method and water limits clear for this exact style?
- Power design: Is the shoe sealed and non-replaceable, or does the model have another power arrangement? If rechargeable, are the correct cable and charging directions provided?
- Child-specific needs: Does the shoe meet any guidance already given for a foot or gait concern?
Use the checklist both before and after delivery. Before purchase, product details can help screen out styles whose fit, compartment protection or care instructions cannot be assessed. After delivery, try the shoes on and inspect the compartment itself. If the real pair does not match the expectations set by the listing or does not fit the child, do not let its lights persuade you to overlook that mismatch.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What light-up shoes do not establish
A light-up feature is not evidence that a shoe improves road safety or makes a child more visible to drivers. The guidance described here does not establish that benefit. If visibility is a concern, do not rely on shoe lights as a substitute for other appropriate precautions.
Likewise, the presence of LEDs does not by itself show that a shoe is safe, comfortable or suitable for daily wear. Those judgments depend on the child’s fit, the shoe’s construction, whether the battery is inaccessible, and the care instructions for that model.
When to ask for professional advice
Seek advice from an APMA member podiatrist if you notice a gait concern, an unusual shoe-wear pattern or another possible foot-health issue. A shoe-selection guide cannot diagnose the reason for a child’s discomfort or wear pattern. If a health professional has identified a specific pathology, follow that professional’s footwear recommendations rather than applying general guidance for school-aged children.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are light-up shoes safe for kids?
They can be considered using the same fit and construction checks as other children’s shoes, plus a battery check. Light-up shoes may contain button batteries, so look for a compartment children cannot access and inspect it again when the shoes arrive. Supervise children using products with button batteries and do not let them handle or remove batteries. The lights alone do not establish that a shoe is comfortable, suitable for everyday wear or safer on the road.
How much room should there be in the toe of a child’s shoe?
APMA recommends about 10–15 mm of room in front of the longest toe, with a toe box at least as wide as the widest part of the foot. Check both feet and choose for the larger one. Do not substitute a fixed size-up rule for checking length, width, toe movement and how securely the shoe holds.
How often should I check my child’s shoe size?
APMA recommends checking sizing every 4–6 months because children grow and shoe sizes vary between brands. Check sooner if the current shoes seem tight or the child’s feet have grown, and assess each new pair rather than relying only on the size label from an older shoe.

Check the care instructions for the exact style. Skechers’ February 16, 2026 parent guide says the documented light-up styles should be spot-cleaned, not machine-washed or dried, and not submerged. It recommends mild soap and warm water, wiping residue with a damp cloth, and air-drying away from direct heat. Those instructions should not be generalized to other brands or styles.
Can I replace the batteries in light-up shoes?
It depends on the model. Skechers says its standard kids’ S-Lights and Twinkle Toes styles use sealed batteries that are not replaceable, and its Australian support guidance warns against accessing the battery. Other products may differ. Follow the exact shoe’s instructions; do not assume a battery is replaceable or try to open the compartment.
How should rechargeable light-up shoes be charged?
Follow the directions for the exact model. Skechers’ Australian customer-support guidance says its rechargeable light-up styles should be charged only with the supplied cable and not left plugged in overnight. That is specific to the rechargeable styles covered by that regional guidance, not a universal rule for every light-up shoe.

Do light-up shoes make children more visible to drivers?
The light-up feature is not evidence that a shoe improves road safety or makes a child more visible to drivers. Do not rely on the shoe lights as a substitute for other appropriate precautions if visibility is a concern.
When should I ask a podiatrist about my child’s shoes?
Ask an APMA member podiatrist if your child has a gait concern, an unusual shoe-wear pattern or another possible foot-health issue, or if you have difficulty finding a suitable fit. If a health professional has identified a specific pathology, follow their footwear advice rather than relying on general recommendations.
The Bottom Line
Choose the shoe by the child’s measured fit and everyday construction first: fit the larger foot, allow about 10–15 mm in front of the longest toe, check width and toe movement, and look for a light, flexible, flat-soled design with breathable material and a secure closure. Then verify that a child cannot access the battery compartment, inspect it again after delivery, and follow care and charging instructions for the exact style. If the child has a gait concern or specific foot-health needs, ask an APMA member podiatrist or treating professional for guidance.
