To choose compatible RAM, start with the exact computer model—not a generic kit recommendation. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the supported DDR generation, module type, capacity limits and memory speeds; for a laptop, also confirm whether its memory can be replaced.
How do I know what RAM fits my PC?
Identify the full model of your computer. For a custom-built desktop, identify both the motherboard and the processor. Their documentation—not the shape of the case or a RAM listing—determines what memory the system supports.

- Find the model. Use the computer’s model name or number. For a custom desktop, find the motherboard model and exact CPU model.
- Open the manufacturer’s specifications or manual. Record the supported DDR generation, module form factor, maximum total capacity, any per-slot or per-module limits, and supported speeds.
- Check the available slots and configuration. Note how many slots are present and, if adding multiple modules, which slots the manual recommends populating.
- Compare candidate memory against every requirement. Match generation and form factor first; then confirm the capacity and speed are within the system’s documented limits.
Desktop systems commonly use full-size DIMMs, while laptops commonly use the smaller SO-DIMM format. Small-form-factor PCs can be exceptions, so confirm the exact system specification rather than choosing based on whether it is called a desktop or laptop. Intel describes the common DIMM and SO-DIMM distinction in its RAM guidance.

Match the DDR generation
DDR generations are physically and electrically different. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable; a motherboard must support the generation of the module. Check the motherboard or system documentation before shopping. Corsair’s DDR4-versus-DDR5 explanation describes why one generation cannot simply substitute for another.

Check the platform’s limits
The processor, motherboard and system configuration all affect memory capacity and speed. Intel’s processor specification guidance can help identify a CPU’s supported maximum memory size and speed, but the motherboard and computer documentation are still needed to confirm support for a particular configuration.
Can I upgrade the RAM in my laptop?
Not necessarily. Some laptops have memory modules that can be accessed and replaced; others have memory soldered to the motherboard, and some combine soldered memory with one or more slots. Check the specifications or service manual for the exact laptop model to determine whether an upgrade is possible and whether a slot is available. Intel likewise advises checking whether laptop memory is accessible or soldered before attempting an upgrade: Intel’s RAM guidance.

How much RAM and what speed should I choose?
There is no single capacity or speed that suits every workload. Choose capacity based on the applications and tasks you actually run, any planned changes to that workload, and the computer’s documented maximum. Then choose a speed supported by the processor and system. A module’s advertised speed is not a guarantee that the computer will operate it at that rating; platform limits and configuration matter.

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
When comparing compatible options, assess them in this order:
- Compatibility: supported DDR generation, DIMM or SO-DIMM form factor, system-model match, and capacity limits.
- Capacity: fit for your workload and upgrade plans without exceeding the documented system limit.
- Configuration: number of modules, slots available, and the manufacturer’s recommended slot population.
- Speed: supported by the CPU and computer; consider it after compatibility and capacity.
- Laptop serviceability: replaceable memory versus soldered memory, confirmed for the exact model.
What if I am installing two or more RAM modules?
Use the motherboard manual’s slot-population instructions. The preferred slots can depend on the board, so do not assume a slot order that applies to every desktop. Kingston advises checking the motherboard manual when installing two modules for dual-channel operation: Kingston’s memory installation guide. MSI’s example instructions use DIMMA2 and DIMMB2 for a particular configuration, illustrating why the board-specific manual matters rather than establishing a universal rule: MSI motherboard installation guidance.

Before purchasing, keep a short checklist: exact model identified; DDR generation and module type confirmed; capacity and speed within documented limits; laptop memory confirmed replaceable if relevant; and slot placement checked if installing multiple modules. Without the exact computer model, no particular kit, capacity or speed can be responsibly identified as the right one.
