If you like Resident Evil, start by deciding what you want to keep: familiar survival-horror action, third-person combat, or simply a tense story with monsters. Resident Evil 4 (2023) is the closest match in this group; Silent Hill 2 shifts toward psychological horror, Dead Space takes survival into science fiction, and Alan Wake 2 centers on supernatural mystery. The Last of Us Part I is an adjacent choice for infected-world survival and character drama, not a direct mechanical substitute.
Choose by the part of Resident Evil you enjoy
These recommendations are grouped by the experience each official PlayStation description emphasizes, not by hands-on comparative testing or a standardized genre score. The US listings confirm platform and premise; they do not establish relative quality, difficulty, scare intensity, playtime, or frame-rate performance.

Start with Resident Evil 4 if you want the nearest fit
The US PlayStation Store lists Resident Evil 4 for PS4 and PS5, categorizes it as Horror, Adventure and Action, and describes Leon Kennedy’s mission in a European village. Its listing calls out modernized gameplay, a reimagined story and survival horror, making it the most direct starting point here if the series itself is the reference you want to retain. The store’s description says, “Featuring modernized gameplay, a reimagined storyline, and vividly detailed graphics, Resident Evil 4 marks the rebirth of an industry juggernaut.” That is PlayStation Store product copy, not a quotation attributed to a named person. Choose Silent Hill 2 for psychological horror
Silent Hill 2 is a PS5 remake of the 2001 game. PlayStation describes James Sunderland searching the town for his late wife and highlights psychological horror, monsters, an over-the-shoulder viewpoint and updated combat. It is the clearest option in this set if you want the psychological and atmospheric side of horror to take priority while keeping modern third-person combat in the mix. Check PlayStation’s Silent Hill 2 page.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Choose Dead Space for science-fiction creature survival
Dead Space moves the survival premise to the mining ship USG Ishimura. Its PS5 listing follows engineer Isaac Clarke after the crew has been slaughtered and describes his struggle against hostile creatures called Necromorphs. Pick it if you are open to a science-fiction setting and creature combat rather than a village or haunted-town premise. The listing does not establish that it is harder, scarier or more action-heavy than the other games here. See Dead Space on the US PlayStation Store.
Choose Alan Wake 2 for a supernatural investigation
Alan Wake 2 is a PS5 horror game with two playable leads: FBI agent Saga Anderson, investigating ritual murders, and writer Alan Wake, trying to escape a nightmare. PlayStation describes their stories as unfolding in separate but connected realities, with light serving as both weapon and refuge. Choose it if a mystery, supernatural darkness and two perspectives appeal more than matching Resident Evil’s setting. See Alan Wake 2 on the US PlayStation Store.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
Consider The Last of Us Part I as an adjacent pick
PlayStation describes Joel and Ellie traveling through a ravaged civilization where infected and hardened survivors threaten them. The PS5 version’s page highlights updated gameplay, exploration, combat and accessibility options. That makes it relevant if you want survival and character-led storytelling, but the description does not establish it as a close Resident Evil gameplay substitute. Check PlayStation’s The Last of Us Part I page.
